ASME STANDARD A112.19.2 – VITREOUS CHINA PLUMBING FIXTURES AND ASME STANDARD A112.19.6 – HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR WATER CLOSETS AND URINALS SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISON OF STANDARDS ASME A112.19.2- 1998 / ASME A112.19.6- 1995 AND ASME A112.19.2- 2003

The new version of ASME A112.19.2 is combination of the old A112.19.2 and ASME A112.19.6. The title of new A112.19.2 has also been changed to “Vitreous China Plumbing Fixtures and Hydraulic Requirements for Water Closets and Urinals”. Besides editorial and grammatical changes done within all three standards, the following are the major changes and information that maybe have been included or excluded in creating the new A112.19.2. The new A112.19.2 added ASME A112.19.12 to its Reference Section and deleted ASME A112.1.2, PTC 19.2, and Interim Supplement 19.5. In Section 1.4 Definitions, the new A112.19.2 now defines the following words, discoloration, flush cycle, and polishing mark. The words, cycle time, pressure-assist action, pressure-assist bowl type, and projection were removed from this section. New information was inserted into Section 2.5 Glazed Surfaces in the new A112.19.2 regarding an area not to be glazed in bidets. In Section 2.8.4 in the new A112.19.2 Off-the-Floor Fixture Supports, fixture supports may now also comply with the requirements of ASME A112.19.12. Under Section 5.1 Tolerances and Dimensions in A112.19.2, the last three sentences in that paragraph referencing the illustrations in Appendix C, was deleted from the new A112.19.2. In Section 3.2.3 in the new A112.19.2, Mounting Details, all mounting bolt hole diameters for wall-mounted water closets shall be a minimum 7/8 inch. The previous version stated the diameter had to be 13/16 inch to 1 inch. Section 5.8 in the old version of A112.19.2, Top Contour, was deleted from the new version. Also, in Section 5.8.1, the requirements for Toilet Seats are no longer called out in the new version. A new sub-section 3.8.3 Wall-Hung Commercial Lavatories was added to the Lavatories section 3.8 in the new A112.19.2. The previous version of A112.19.2, also included more information regarding Overflows but the new version removed this section (5.9.2 in the old A112.19.2)

Section 5 Performance Requirements in the new A112.19.2, is basically a new section that was added to the revised version of this standard that calls out all the performance requirements for water closets, lavatories, and urinals. Within this section test pressures are specified for water closets under Section 5.1.1 and Section 5.3.1 for Urinals. Operating pressures for water closets are stated in Section 5.1.9 and 5.1.10. Figure 5 Lavatory and Bidet Supply Punching and Outlet Details from the old version of A112.19.2 was deleted. This information is now called out in a new Figure 6 in the update version of A112.19.2. A new Figure 5 for Roughing-In and Seat Bolt Requirements for Back Spud Floor-Outlet Water Closets has been added to the new A112.19.2 along with two new Tables 5 Static Test Pressures for Hydraulic Performance Tests for Water Closets and 6 Static Test Pressures for Laboratory Tests for Urinals. In Section 6.2 Nonpermanent Markings on Products in the new A112.19.2, two new sentences were added that state, “These markings shall not be required to be permanent, but shall be visible after installation. These markings shall be intended for removal by the occupant only and shall so state.” A new Section 6.5 Repair Parts was added to the updated version of A112.19.2. The Absorption Test (Sect 8.1 in old and 7.1 in new) the sentence stating “After boiling for two hours, turn off heat and allow water to cool”, was removed from the new version. The new version also inserted a new equation to calculate the percentage of Absorption. In Section 8.9 in the old A112.19.2, the word “bidet” was removed from the title of the section and within the body of the text in the updated version. Also “at a rate of 9.5 L/m (2.5 gpm)” was also removed. In Section 7.2 Crazing Testing the new A112.19.2, the words “until chilled” have been added. In Section 7.7.1 Wall-Mounted Water Closets, the new version now calls out the channel type as being “American Standard Channel Size 3U 4.1”. The Test Apparatus and General Instructions Section (7.1.2 in A112.19.6 and 8.1.1 in A112.19.2), was modified by becoming more descriptive and no longer referencing ASME PTC 19.2 or ASME Interim Supplement 19.5 Part II of Fluid Meters. In Section 8.1.2 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.2.3 in A112.19.6, more information was inserted regarding the testing requirements for Gravity Type Flush Tank Water Closets. The information that discussed if manufacturer’s instructions and specifications were absent, has been changed to “the supply fill valve shall remain set as packaged form the manufacturer”. Also, the paragraph regarding Testing One Piece Water Closets has been deleted.

A new Section 8.1.4 in the revised A112.19.2 has been added discussing Flushometer Tank or other Pressurized Flushing Device Water Closets. In Section 8.1.5 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.2.6 in A112.19.6, the amount of times the test media shall be tested was changed and the test water closet may now discharge into a transport waste line. In Section 8.2 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.6.2 in A112.19.6, another apparatus type was added that can be used for the Trap Seal Depth Determination Test. Minor modifications were made to the procedure. Changes were also done to the report section. The following sentence was deleted from the Performance Requirement section, “The trap seal shall assure protection against suction and back pressure in the sanitary drainage system and against destruction from evaporation during normal periods of nonuse.” Two new Figures 8 and 9 were added entitled “Required Standardization of Water Supply for Testing Gravity and Flushometer-Tank Operated Type Water Closets” and “Required Standardization of Water Supply for Testing Flushometer-Valve Operated Type Water Closets and Urinals”. In Section 8.3 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.6.3 in A112.19.6, more information was added to the procedure section for the Trap Seal Restoration Test requiring more testing than the previous version stated. Modifications were also done to the Report section. A new Figure 10, Diagram Depicting Suggested Apparatus for Trap Seal Depth Determination for Water Closets and Urinals, was added. The opening statement in the Water Consumption Test in Section 8.4 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.6.1 in A112.19.6 was removed stating, “The measurement of consumption shall only be necessary for water-saving and low-consumption water closets.” Under the Apparatus section, the calibration increments were changed from 0.1 gal (0.4 L) to 0.07 gal (0.25 L). Also, more apparatus capable of measuring volumes are accepted. Minor modifications were made to the procedure, report, and performance requirement sections. In Section 8.5 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.3 in A112.19.6, the Ball and Granule Test have been combined in the new version. Modifications were also made to the size and density of the granules and balls. The procedure section was changed to reflect the combination of balls and granules being tested at once. More information was added to the performance requirements. The Test Media under the Surface Wash Test in Section 8.6 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.4 in A112.19.6 was changed to give more detail information as to what type of ink shall be used. Modifications were also made in the procedure section. More details were added to the report and performance requirements sections.

The Dye Tests in Section 7.1.5.1 in A112.19.6 for water closets was removed from the new version. A new test entitled Mixed Media with Neutrally Buoyant Wastes was added in Section 8.7 of the new A112.19.2. A new Figure 11, Drainline Transport Characterization Test Assembly, was added. In Section 8.8 in A112.19.2 and 7.1.7 in A112.19.6 the density of the balls used for the Drainline Transport Characterization Procedure was changed. The type of glass elbow under the apparatus section was also modified. The drain can be extended up from the floor using fittings also complying with ASME A112.6.2. Minor modifications were made in the procedure section. A new test entitled “Overflow Test for Gravity Tanks” was inserted into Section 8.9 of the new A112.19.2. The Water Rise Test in Section 7.1.8 and the Rim Top and Seat Fouling Test in Section 7.1.9 were deleted from the revised version of the standard. Under the Lavatory Overflow Test in Section 9 of the new A112.19.2, the water supply adjusted to supply water to the fixture shall now be at a flow rate and pressure as specified in ASME A112.18.1 for maximum flow rate testing of a lavatory faucet. In Section 10.2 in A112.19.2 and 8.2.1 in A112.19.6, the supply stop shall now be adjusted to the manufacturer’s instructions and specifications and in the absence of such instructions and specifications the stop shall be adjusted as specified in Figure 9 of A112.19.2. Urinals shall now undergo a Trap Seal Depth Determination Test in Section 10.3 of the new A112.19.2. For the Ink Test on Urinals in Section 10.4 in A112.19.2 and 8.3.1 in A112.19.6, the flushing surface shall be scrubbed with mild liquid dishwashing detergent instead of commercial scouring powder. For the Dye Test on Urinals in Section 10.5 in A112.19.2 and 8.4.1 in A112.19.6, a new type of dye referred to as brilliant polar blue, can now also be used. Modifications were done within the procedure section along with adding more information. A new report section was also added. Changes were also applied to the performance requirement section. In Section 10.6 in A112.19.2 and 8.5 in A112.19.6, the apparatus section for the Water Consumption Test on Urinals was changed. Minor modifications were also done within the procedure section. The performance requirement section also states that the requirements shall be base upon the average of the individual values from the three test

sets. The information regarding the average water consumption of water saving urinals over the range of test pressures was deleted. Section 9 in A112.19.6, Performance Test Methods for Alternative Electro/Mechanical/Hydraulic Assist Plumbing Fixtures, was not inserted into the new A112.19.2. Appendix B, Water Pressure Recommendations, from the old A112.19.2 was moved to Sections 5.1.9 and 5.1.10 in the new version making this information mandatory text. More information was added to the Note in Nonmandatory Appendix B Illustrations in the new A112.19.2. Under the Government Requirements Appendix, the applicable documents section was changed. More information was inserted for the Part Numbers for Water Closets, Lavatories, Urinals, Service Sinks, Drinking Fountains, and Bidets. Information Part Numbers for Perineal Baths, Color and Grade, and Perineal Bath Accessories were removed. New sections for Standard Commercial Products, Fixture Supports, and Sampling were added. The Quality Assurance Provisions section was also changed. New information in Ordering Data section was added. Changes were made to the Test Materials Nonmandatory Appendix. Appendix A, Waste Removal and Water Consumption, from A112.19.6 was not included in the update version of A112.19.2. A new Appendix F was added to the new version of A112.19.2 entitled Supplementary Purchase Specification: Discharge Adjustment Requirements for Low-Consumption Water Closets.
