Carrera Reference Table
(May 3, 2009)
Printer Friendly PDF Version
This Reference Table covers Carrera chronographs that Heuer produced during the period from the introduction of the Carrera (in 1964) through the creation of the TAG-Heuer brand, in 1985. This Reference Table generally presents the models and versions of the Carrera in chronological order, with the models grouped into eight sections. It is useful to provide an overview of the most important styles of cases that Heuer used for the Carreras, as these case styles account for the vast majority of the Carreras that Heuer produced over the period covered by this Table.
The Major Case Styles. During this period, Heuer used Two Major Styles of cases, as follows: ●
The "60's Style" Case / First Major Style. This style of case was introduced in 1964 and used through 1970, and may be called the "60's style" case. Carrera chronographs which used this the First Major
●
Style of case are described in Sections A, C and D of the following table, and housed manual-wind movements. Click the following icon, to have a look at the "60's style" Carrera case. The "70's Style" or "Automatic" Case / Second Major Style. This style of case was developed for the automatic Carreras (introduced in 1969), and was used for various Carrera chronographs made through approximately 1979. This case may be called the "70's style" or "automatic style" case (even though it housed both automatic and manual-wind movements). The Carrera chronographs which used the Second Major Style of case are described in Section E of the Table. Click the following icon, to have a look at the "70's style" / "Automatic style" Carrera case.
In addition to these Two Major Styles of cases, Heuer used used five other styles of cases for the Carreras, as follows: (a) two styles of cases for the Carrera 12 Dato chronographs (described in Section B), (b) a barrel-shaped case for the Carreras (described in Section F), (c) a bespoke case for the quartz-powered Carreras, derived from the 70's Style (Second Major Style) (described in Section G), and (d) a specific style of case for the Carreras powered by the Lemania 5100 movement (described in SectionH). Accordingly, we see that Heuer used a total of seven different case styles to house the approximately 100 models and versions of the Carrera.
Guide to This Reference Table. The following are some of the conventions used in this Reference Table: ● ●
●
● ●
Description: All cases are stainless steel, unless otherwise indicated. All crystals are plastic / plexi, except for the Carreras in Barrel-Style cases, shown in Section F, which have a mineral crystal. Movement: Movements are as follows -- 72, 92, 723 (72c), 7730, 7733, 7734 and 7736 are by Valjoux; 11, 12 and 15 are Chronomatic movements, made by the joint venture between Heuer, Breitling, Buren and Dubois-Depraz; 189 is by Landeron; 5100 is by Lemania. Catalog Dates (or estimated): Dates refer to catalogs published by Heuer. "Not Shown" means that this version of the Carrera was not shown in any Heuer catalog. "Est" means that the watch is not shown in any catalog and the date of production has been estimated. Price New: Prices are retail prices, as shown in Heuer catalogs or on price lists. Prices are for chronographs on straps, unless "bracelet" is indicated. Range of Reported Serial Numbers: For each version of the Carrera, we indicate the lowest reported serial number and the highest reported serial number. There will be other samples within this range, but using these high and low numbers may allow the researcher to estimate the age of a watch and also confirm that a particular sample has not be re-cased.
What's Included; What's Not Included. This Reference Table includes all the Carreras that were produced from 1964 through 1985. This Reference Table does not include other chronographs that Heuer produced using the Carrera case (for example, the first version of the Skipper and one version of the Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer, both of which used Carrera cases). We point out that there may have been other versions of Carreras available by special order (for example, versions with a Pulsometer scale printed on the dial). We have not included the so-called "Poor Man's" Carreras, the chronographs that Heuer manufactured for other brands (for example, Zodiac and Clebar), which may be identical to the Heuer Carreras (other than the name on the dial and movement). Please Help Us Build this Carrera Reference Table. This expanded and updated Carrera Reference Table is being released on May 3, 2009, and is very much a work in progress. In the near term, we hope to reorganize the Carrera section of OnTheDash to correspond to this Reference Table, and add links to photos of each version. Mark Moss and Jeff Stein are the primary authors of this Table, and we would enthusiastically welcome your contributions and comments. At the time (May 2009), the following would be especially helpful: ●

●
Photos of Your Carreras. We will be reorganizing and expanding the Carrera section of OnTheDash, and are trying to gather photos of as many models and versions of the Carrera as possible. If you have a Carrera that is not shown OnTheDash, please send us photos of your Carrera. Serial Numbers. We have set up a column in the Reference Table to show the range of serial numbers for each of the 100 models and versions of the Carrera and we need to begin to populate this column with serial numbers. So please send us photos of your Carrera and tell us the serial number. We believe that this serial number data will also be helpful as we establish dates for other models (Autavia, Monaco, etc.) Comments, Suggestions and Corrections. Writing this Table has been a collaborative effort, with many members of the OnTheDash / Chronocentric Heuer Discussion Forum community making valuable contributions. We hope that this Table will be useful for collectors of these watches, and we will welcome any comments, suggestions or corrections.

B. Carrera 12 Datos. The Carrera 12 Datos are unique among the Carreras, in that they do not have the "Carrera" name on the dial. Still, Heuer named them the "Carrera 12 Dato" in the catalogs, and this is how collectors refer to them. The version that we show as "First execution Carrera 12 Dato" (which has the distinctive "fat lugs") was introduced around 1962, before the "Carrera" existed for Heuer; in the 1966/67 catalog, Heuer first referred to this chronograph as the "Carrera 12 Dato", Reference 2547, and the name was used for subsequent models produced for several years. ●

Triple Calender Three Register Chronograph. Triple calendar indicates day, date and month (sometimes called "DDM"). Three register chronograph has 12-hour capacity. Movement is the Valjoux 723, derived from the Valjoux 72. Unique Style Dials: Short, bevelled, polished steel applied markers, with Arabic numeral 12 First Execution Hands Thin polished steel hands, with luminous inserts. Style of Cases: The first execution of the Carrera 12 Dato (Row B-1) had a screw-back case; the second execution Carrera 12 Datos (Rows B-2 through B-4) have a waterproof snap-back case. These second execution snap-back cases have a monocoque construction, with the back not designed to be easily removed, so that the movement is accessed from the top, by removing the crown (which has a split stem) and the crystal.

E. "70's" or "Automatic" Style Case (Second Major Case Style). Heuer introduced the Second Major Style case for the Carrera in 1969, when Heuer introduced the first automatic Carrera. (This coincided with the introduction of a new style case for the automatic Autavias and the introduction of the Monaco, an entirely new model of chronograph.) This Second Major Style of case was used for both automatic and manual-wind Carreras, with the cases being either stainless steel, gold-plated or 18 karat gold. The following describes the key features of the Carreras that used the Second Major Style of case: ●
●
●
Dials: Carreras with the Second Major Style of case used three different styles of dial, as follows. First execution dials for the Second Major Style of case have applied markers, with single inserts (for hours one through eleven) and a double insert at twelve o'clock. The inserts contrast with the dial, so that there are black inserts for the lighter (silver) dial, and white inserts for the darker (charcoal) dial. Hour recorders have numerals 3-6-9-12. First execution dials may have either first or second execution hands. Second execution dials for the Second Major Style of case are described in catalogs as being "luminous". These dials have wider applied markers, with double inserts for each hour. The inserts continue to contrast with the dial (black inserts for the lighter dials and white inserts for the darker dials. Hour recorders have all 12 numerals, 1-through-12. Second execution dials will always have second execution hands. Third execution dials for the Second Major Style of case were used only on the Reference 110.253B, 110.253G and 110.255 Carreras. These dials have a luminous finish, with one version having a blue Cotes de Geneve finish. Markers are longer and narrower, and do not have the contrasting inserts. Hour recorders have all 12 numerals, 1-through-12. Third execution dials either have third execution hands or off-white hands with near full-length luminous inserts, similar to those used on the Daytonas. Tachy ring contrasts with dial (light ring on dark dial or dark ring on light dial), unless indicated. Early tachy rings (used with first execution dials) were marked from 50 to 200 units per hour, with the word "Tachy" at three o'clock. Later tachy rings were marked from 60 to 500 units per hour, with the word "Tachy" near one o'clock. The two styles of tachy ring were used interchangeably during some periods, so that there are [second and third] execution dials with tachy rings having the 50 to 200 units per hour scale. Hands: First execution hands for these models are polished steel (or gold) with luminous inserts (distal) and black inserts (proximal), as per second execution of the hands used in first primary case syle. Second execution hands for these models are brushed steel with narrow luminous inserts (distal) and black edges and triangular tips (for light dials) or silver edges and triangular tips (for dark dials). Third execution hands for these models are painted steel, and wider than the second execution, with wider luminous inserts (distal) and black inserts toward the center (proximal).

F. Barrel Style Case. In 1974, Heuer introduced a new case for the automatic Carreras -- a distinctive barrel-shaped case with a brushed finish and covered lugs. These new cases were used for both Caliber 12 and Caliber 15 Carreras, but not for any of the manual-wind models. The following describes the key features of these Carreras: ● ● ●
●
Dials: Blue, fume and champagne dials have luminous metallic finish (Cotes de Geneve), with vertical line dividing the dial into three areas. Chronograph registers are black on all models. Cases: brushed stainless steel, with starburst pattern; covered lugs. All the barrel-style Carreras use a mineral crystal, with these being the only Carreras that do not use a plastic / plex crystal Hands: thin, pencil-style hands, with nearly full-length luminous inserts. Tips and edges of hands are painted orange, black or white, as described below. Chronograph needles have rectangular base (at pinion), except for 110.515 CHN (which has regular style chronograph needles) Tachy ring: Tachy ring matches color of dial ; marked from 60 to 500 units per hour, with the word "Tachy" near one o'clock.

G. Quartz-Powered Carreras. In 1978, Heuer introduced its Carrera Twin series, described as a new generation of electronic timepieces with combined analog and LCD displays. The [following year], Heuer introduced a series of quartz-powered "time-only" watches, stating that "not everyone needs a chronograph". The following are key features of these quartz-powered Carreras: ● ●
●
●
Carrera Twin Functions: Quartz-analog (hands) for time-of-day and LCD panel switches modes to display (a) date and running seconds, (b) second timezone and (c) stopwatch (chronograph). Cases: Cases are the same basic shape as the cases used for the automatic / 1970's style Carreras, except that the cases are considerably shallower, in that they house a thin quartz movement rather than the modular automatic chronograph movements (Caliber 11, 12, and 15). All cases are stainless steel, unless otherwise noted below. Dials: Described as "luminous" for the Carrera Twins; markers on the Carrera Twin are longest at 12:00 (twelve o'clock), and become progressively shorter moving toward the bottom of the dial, to allow room for the LCD display across the bottom. Hands: Hands are narrow steel (or gold) hands, with black edges and luminous inserts.
