WATER QUALITY LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I or II CITY OF CRESCENT CITY 377 “J” Street Crescent City, CA 95531 (707)464-7483 www.crescentcity.org RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs daily required analyses for compliance testing and reporting of water, wastewater, and other environmental samples using standard analytical methods; and performs other assigned work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Performs routine laboratory analyses, including ammonia, conductivity, alkalinity, pH, temperature, total hardness, turbidity, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen, fluoride, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, volatile solids, settleable solids, suspended solids, dissolved solids, oil and grease; performs routine microbiological analyses, including total and fecal coliform, Colilert, enterococcus, and Heterotrophic Plate count; maintains routine documentation, including LIMS systems, worksheet/log sheet entries, sample documentation and chain of custody forms; records data precisely and accurately; operates and maintains test equipment such as UV/visible spectrophotometer, dissolved oxygen meters, pH meters, ISE meters and turbidimeter; performs routine calibration; collects samples of wastewater, sludge, receiving water and industrial waste in accordance with established lab procedures; prepares, sorts, washes, decontaminates, sterilizes and stores lab glassware; prepares chemical reagents and bacteriological culture media; performs routine quality control checks for all reagents, media and data generated; other duties may include performing industrial pretreatment inspections, sampling and testing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Laboratory Technician I - High school diploma or equivalent. Laboratory Technician II – Two years of college level coursework in a related science field; possession of a degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or a related science is desirable. EXPERIENCE: Laboratory Technician I – Two years experience in laboratory testing and procedures; or, a combination of education, experience and/or training which demonstrates the required knowledge and ability to successfully perform the job duties. Laboratory Technician II - Two years experience in laboratory testing and procedures. KNOWLEDGE of Standard physical, chemical and microbiological properties of wastewater; methods and techniques used in quantitative laboratory analysis related to subject matter; laboratory equipment related to subject matter and its use and care; laboratory hazards and proper safety precautions and procedures, chemical hygiene, including personal protective equipment; methods for preparation of standardized reagents and media; methods of cleaning glassware used in laboratory analysis; basic wastewater mathematical calculations related to subject meter.

ABILITY to perform standard quantitative laboratory analyses; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, in the English language; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; perform standard physical, chemical and biological tests on treated and polluted water, potable water, industrial and domestic wastewater and related materials, including proper sampling and preservation techniques; analyze and interpret standard laboratory test results; maintain accurate and complete laboratory records; follow establish safe working practices; follow oral and written instructions; clean and prepared laboratory equipment/glassware and maintain laboratory in an orderly fashion; read, understand and follow proper procedures in preparing standardized reagents and media; perform basic wastewater mathematical calculations. CERTIFICATIONS: Laboratory Technician I – Possession of a Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association, or the ability to obtain certificate within 18 months. Laboratory Technician II - Possession of a Grade II Laboratory Analyst Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association; or, possession of a Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certificate, and the ability to obtain certification as a Grade II Laboratory Analyst within LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, or equivalent if a resident of another state. Must have and maintain a license in compliance with the City’s employee driving standards. EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION: A complete City application with supplemental questionnaire is required. Pay and Benefits Lab Tech I – $15.57 - $18.91/hour Lab Tech II - $16.47 - $20.00/hour Retirement – PERS 2.5% @ 55 for Classic members; 2% @ 62 for New members. Employee pays 8% PERS member contribution. Health – The City provides a $1425/month flexible spending account to apply towards health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, air ambulance, long-term disability, and life insurance. Vacation Leave – Vacation is accrued at 4 hours biweekly upon employment and increases with time in service. There is an accumulation limit. Sick Leave – Sick leave is accrued at 4 hours biweekly with an accumulation limit. Holidays – 12 paid holidays per year. Pay Range:
