Course Description

(2)

• The course co rse Probability Probabilit and Statistics for Engineers is designed for students to gain an understanding of probability, statistics and random p processes. • Students are expected to have learnt the basic concept about p probability. y • There are three sections, ENGG2450A, B and C. S Section A : EE students ((Prof. f W.K. Cham) C ) Section B : BME students (Prof. X. Gao of SEEM) Section C : SEEM students (Prof. Kevin Ng of SEEM) BME students of section B are allowed to switch to section A.

• These 3 courses will have common midterm exam and final exam. Midterm exam will be exactly the same and be held on M h1 March 1, 2017 2017. Final Fi l exam will ill h have 60% common questions ti and d 40% different questions for the 3 sections.

Assessment Final Examination: 50% of the total mark

Final Grade Assignment: Pool students from all sections together to decide cut-off cut off points for A, A-, B-, C- and D.

Assessment

(4)

Final Examination: 50% Quizzes (one mark for each of the ten quizzes): 10% • Each quiz lasts for about 15 minutes. The questions are simple but requires reasonable understanding of some important concept. • Students are allowed to discuss with each others during the quizzes. quizzes

Midterm Examination: 30% • 1M March h 2017 (W (Wed) d) tto ttestt subjects bj t in i chapters h t 1,3,4 1 3 4 andd 5.1-5.5 5 1 5 5 (t (tentative). t ti )

Assignments: 10% • The assignments are to help students acquire better understanding of the concept. • Students should submit the assignments during tutorials or by emails before deadlines otherwise they may not be corrected corrected. • Some of the questions in the examinations may be similar to the questions in the assignments.

Midterm Exam Arrangement

(5)

* 100% common questions, no optional questions * 1 March 2017 (Wed (Wed,8th 8th week) in class * Covers chapters 1, 3, 4, and 5.1-5.5 (Tentative – depends on the progress of all sections) O make-up a e up mid-term d te examination e a at o will be provided p o ded u under de • NO any circumstances. If the situation seems inevitable (illness with a doctor’s doctor s sick leave certificate or other leave certificate –will be decided by individual lecturers case by case), then the weight for the midterm examination will be transferred to the final examination.

Final Exam Arrangement

(6)

* 60% common questions, 40% different among sections, no optional questions. Common questions (60%): materials cover in chapters 1–9 Questions for Section A (40%): materials cover in chapters 1–9 and Random Processes Questions for Sections B and C (40%): materials cover in chapters 1–11 1 11

• Follows the University’s policy for make-up final examination. Medical cases will be handled by the Registrar Registrar. For non non-medical medical cases cases, course teacher’s view will be consulted and the final approval rests on the Registrar.
