Farmer’s Satisfaction towards Sugar Mill Industry (A Study on Farmers in District Jind) Surender Kumar, Assistant Prof. of Commerce, G.M.N. (P.G.) College, Ambala Cantt

ABSTRACT The sugar mill industry is one of the largest industry of the world. The industry can survive only with the production of sugar cane. To increase the production of sugar cane farmer’s satisfaction is necessary. The various factors which affect the level of farmer’s satisfaction and the performance of sugar mill industry are taken for the present study. The opinion of the farmer about industry and their suggestions for the growth of industry are also taken for the present study. Simple percentage methods are used for interpretation of data. Hundred farmers from Jind district are selected randomly for the present study. From finding of the studies the author wants to give the suggestions to the management for improving farmer’s satisfaction. Keeping in mind the above factors the present study has been taken.

INTRODUCTION: The farmers are the backbone of Sugar Mill Industry. They produce sugar cane in their field by day and night hard work. The sugar cane plant mature after one year. The sowing period of sugar cane crop is from Oct. to February. It mature in the month of Nov. to March. After maturity the farmers cut the sugar cane crop from their field and with the help of any vehicle like tractor- trolley, Truck etc. the sugar came come to sugar mill industry. The industry produces sugar from sugar cane. This study could give clear cut picture regarding farmers’ satisfaction level. This study was carried out for a period of one month. The objectives also include evaluating the opinion of the farmers about various facilities given by sugar mill Jind. A sample size of 100 farmers of Jind District was selected. Primary data was collected through interview schedules. Secondary data was collected from books, newspapers, websites and reports. Simple percentage methods were used. This study could give clear cut picture regarding farmer’s satisfaction towards sugar mill industry Jind.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The main objective of the study is to know about the farmer’s satisfaction towards sugar mill industry. This study could be helpful for sugar mill industry in

The study was limited to a specific number of respondents, which did not cover the whole population, so this can not be a total opinion of all the farmers. The study has certain limitations in its information The study was conducted only for one month and it is a time bound study and the depth analysis is limited As it was a time bound study, the coverage of information in finding out the farmer satisfaction is limited by a number of questions.

PERIOD OF STUDY The study covers a period of one month from 1 st June to 30th June 2011.

A BRIEF INDUSTRY PROFILE The Jind Co-op Sugar Mills Industry was established on Feb 16, 1985 with cost of Rs. 10,41,74,000/-. The crushing capacity of industry is 125 tons sugar cane daily. The profit till 1999-2000 was Rs. 1140.64 Lacs. The production of sugar in crushing season 1999-2000 was 1,94,515 gunny bags. The recovery of sugar was 8.75%. The mills provide interest free loan for seed of sugar cane. 25% subsidy is provided for seed and land treatment. The mill have a loss of Rs. 484.94 Lacs in the year 1999-2000 due to less recovery of sugar and increase of sugarcane rate. About 1,000 people have been given employment by the mill.

The mill achieved third position in the country in the year 1991-92, it achieved first position of technical skill in the year 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1995-96 and second position in the year 1997-98.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS The data has been collected from the farmers through interview schedules. It was collected for the first time and was original in character. Thus, the primary data is first hand data. The data to be collected present from the respondents or unit of population directly by the researcher. Table 1. INTERPRETATION: From the Table 1, it is clear that 68% of the respondents preferred variety No. 767. They said that this variety is more profitable as compare to other variety. 17% of the respondents preferred variety No. J-64 and 15% of the respondents preferred variety No. 7717.

INTERPRETATION: It is clear from the above table 2 that 80% of the respondents said that financial assistance for production are given by industry. 8% said that it is not given and 12% said that financial assistance are not given always. INTERPRETATION: It is clear from the above table 6 that 93% of the respondents are not satisfied with the price of sugar cane. They said that it is less than as compare to other state. Only 7% respondents are satisfied with the price of sugar cane. Table 7. INTERPRETATION: It is clear from the above table 8 that 89% of the respondents said that the payment of sugar cane should be credited in Bank A/c within 10 days. Only 11% respondents are agree that it should be credited in Bank A/c within one month.

behaviour is good and 2% said that behaviour is excellent. In the research conducted, it was observed that 93% of the respondents are not satisfied with the price of sugar cane. They said it is less than as compare to other state. In the research conducted, it was observed that 82% of the respondents are satisfied with the payment of sugar cane through Bank Account. In the research conducted, it was observed that 89% of the respondents are agree that the payment of sugar cane should be credited in Bank Account within 10 days. In the research conducted, it was observed that 90% of the respondents are agree that all the factor including weather, rain, irrigation and chemical affected the production of sugar cane.

INTERPRETATION: It is clear from the above table 9 that 90% of the respondents said that all the factor including Weather, Rain, Irrigation and Pesticide affected the production of sugar cane. 5% respondents said that the production of sugar cane affected by rain. 3% respondents said that the production of Sugar Cane is affected by the weather. 1% said that the production is affected by the irrigation and 1% said that the production is affected by the pesticide.

Even though there are different variety of Sugar Cane but 68% of the respondents prefer variety No. 767. It was identified from the study that 80% of the respondents are satisfied with the financial assistance for the production given by industry. In the research conducted, it was observed that 70% of the respondents are satisfied with the pesticide for sugar cane supplied by the industry. In the research conducted, it was observed that 70% of the respondents are not aware about the training facility provided by the industry to farmers. In the research conducted, it was observed that 71% of the respondents said that the behaviour of the sugar mill employees are poor. 17% said that the behaviour is average. Only 10% said that

The Industry can provides training facility to farmers for the production of sugar cane. The Industry can offer higher rates of sugar cane. The Industry can add latest technology to improve the recovery of sugar cane. The industry can increase the amount of financial assistance given to the farmers. The Industry can supply pesticide for the production of sugar cane to farmer at more concessional rate. The behaviour of the employees of the industry with the farmers should be better. The payment of sugar cane should be credited in Bank Account of farmers as soon as possible.

CONCLUSION A detailed study has been conducted to identify the satisfaction of the farmer’s towards Sugar Mill Industry, Jind. The study revealed the various aspects of farmer’s satisfaction. From the detailed studies conducted, it is clearly understood that there is a direct relation between farmer satisfaction and riding performance of Sugar Mill Industry, Jind. The study reveals about the satisfaction of the farmer’s towards Sugar Mill Industry, Jind and the factors that influence satisfaction.
