2. Reported Speech Well, it was the night of the dance and Jane and I Jane were sitting at a table, watching the dancefloor. I asked her why she was there all by herself when she answered that she wished she wasn’t. She had been hoping that Tom would ask her out to that dance, but she thought she didn’t make it clear do him that she liked him so much. I asked her how she had tried to let him know and she replied that it all sounded very stupid then, but that she had hoped he would catch on. During the last few weeks she had tried to sit so that he could always see her. Once, in class, she had made a remark about his glasses and explained to me that she really liked the way he wrinkled his nose to keep his glasses up. And then, one day while walking up to the chemistry-lab, she had dropped one of her books on purpose. He had picked it up but hadn’t said a word. She had looked him deep in the eyes and still – he had said nothing. Jane was sure he didn’t like her. I suggested that he was just too shy, but she said she could feel that he didn’t like her. She asked me what she could do. So I said that if I was her I would just walk up to him and ask him to dance. I said that there was nothing wrong with that and that, if he didn’t want to, well, at least then she would know.
