Hazmat Materials Training Fact Sheet Module 1 – Introduction Hazardous materials are substances and articles that pose an unreasonable risk to your health, safety, property, or the environment when offered into transportation.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires hazardous materials transportation training for all persons that perform one or more of the following functions: • • • • •
The consequences of non-compliance with the DOT's Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) include: • •
Civil and/or criminal penalties Imprisonment
The HMR outlines requirements for: • • • • • •
Loading, unloading, or handling hazardous materials; Manufacturing, testing, reconditioning, or repairing HM packaging; Preparing hazardous materials for transportation; Supervising or managing hazardous materials transportation safety; or Operating a vehicle used to transport hazardous materials
Receiving hazardous materials transportation training; Using authorized packaging for hazardous materials; Communicating risks through standardized marks and labels; Preparing shipping papers to accompany the shipment; Securing the hazardous materials to prevent a release; and Responding to an incident or accident involving hazardous materials
