Kingsbury Episcopi Area Newsletter - Issue 137 November and December 2016 Thelma Salway 1929-2016 It was with great sadness that friends and relatives packed the Methodist Church for a thanksgiving service for the life of Thelma Salway (nee Tucker) on 20th October. Thelma was born in Newtown in 1929 and attended the village primary school before moving onto the girls’ grammar school in Yeovil during the war years. She had many a story to tell of her schooldays including catching the train from Thorney Halt and of forgetting her gas mask one day. She was sent home to get it and then had to return to Yeovil again. Thelma married and raised a family in the village and was very happy when several family members returned to live near her. She was brought up to “be useful” and indeed Thelma has contributed much to parish life. She was Clerk to the Parish Council for 38 years, retiring in 2005. She was also the school secretary for many years as well as being part of the team that produces this newsletter from its beginnings until a couple of years ago. Her many memories and photos were used in the two village history books and she took an A presentation made to Thelma on her retirement from the parish council active part in their in 2005. Also pictured are Kevin Cox production. She was also active in the and Bob Warren. Women’s Institute until it disbanded in this village and the Gardening Club. Kingsbury Time Travellers Cards for Christmas Gifts … Seeds n’ Spices ……..a gift in time We are preparing boxed sets of greetings cards ready for you to consider buying for friends and family as a gift, of and from the parish. The Cards : From the 100’s of photographs we have been given access to, 20 have been selected as representative of aspects of the parish’s life and history through its people over time. We are aiming for this to be the first print-run in a series of cards which can be used as greetings cards and at the same time celebrate our work and the parish. Our thanks for all their support in the production of these cards, to: ADPR of New Cross, Teapot Creative of Hambridge, Muchelney Pottery, Burrow Hill Cider & The Somerset Distillery, and Acanthus Print of Wellington. You should be able to buy them at the Christmas Fair. The boxed cards – and ingredients for the small pot pourri – seeds n’ spices - is going to be £7.50 for a selection of 5 different cards with envelopes. We are producing 100 boxed sets. When they are gone they are indeed gone in this Christmas Presentation Box form. Contact us on 01935 822654 to pre-order and/or buy loose. Seeds n’ Spices will be a selection from: Walnuts from around Thorney : sycamore seeds from around Burrow Hill: horse chestnuts from around St Martin’s Churchyard: acorns from around Stembridge : mistletoe from around East Lambrook. Spices will be a selection from cinnamon, cloves, star anise and all-spice and these all come from beyond Martock. There are four candles(!) and an historic recipe taken from The 1989 Kingsbury Episcopi Parish Monthly. Possibly, the most perfect gift to you and for friends and relations.

The Far Above Rubies Art Group, supported by the Kingsbury Time Travellers, is considering making a community collage to celebrate women, past and present, of the parish. We are looking for interested volunteers from the community who want to make new friends in the parish and work together to produce something we can be really proud of. Everyone is welcome; male, female, young or not so young and you don’t even need to be good at sewing! The beauty of a collage is that it can be anything we want it to be, so even if you don’t consider yourself to be particularly good at anything remotely ‘crafty’, you can guarantee that there will be many ways you can contribute Interested? Then why not come along to the next meeting where we will be discussing what we want to make and how we want to make it. The meeting will be held in the St Martin’s Church Rooms in Kingsbury Episcopi, Saturday, 19th November 10.30 am – 12.30 pm. Please let Sara or Anne-Marie know if you are interested in attending, or just call for a chat to find out more about the project – we’d love to hear from you. The Candlelit Christmas Market is now firmly in the Kingsbury social calendar. The market has been running for 11 years and to date has raised £8,366.78 towards the community centre. This year it is on Saturday 26th November 6-8pm. It will be the usual mix of festive fare, wonderful hand crafted items that anyone would be pleased to receive on Christmas Day. Warm yourself with hog roast, mulled wine or a beer while listening to festive tunes and catching up with old friends and a chance to meet new ones. The Community Centre is progressing with noticeable speed and remains on target for completion in early spring. Please come along and support this event. We are still raising money for all the things that the centre will need to make it that special place. Any offers of help on the day, or offers of raffle/tombola prizes or for a stall please contact Marion on 01935 822978.

There is still time to make a donation towards the equipment fund through the Localgiving website. No Room at the Inn – Kingsbury Time Travellers at The Rusty Axe A big thanks to those who came to the Time Travellers Event held at The Rusty Axe in support of The Stembridge Cluster weekend. Through a series of home-made films, old and contemporary photographs, the theme of Buildings & People of the parish was explored. Susan Irvine contributed a creative poem - Under Your Watchful Eye - written with a reference to one of the previous owners of the building in which she and her family now live. It has a tragic reference to Lucy Ann Willy who ran the shop “Southways” in Silver Street in the early 1900s. This contribution was followed by five short films on the theme of Stories, Myth, Legend and Memories. The five people who made the films shared their memories of the Rood family and in particular the Rood sisters who lived at Higher Farm on Bladon Hill and were renowned cheese-makers. There are also many tales surrounding them. The five who made the films ranged in age from the mid – 90’s to the early 70’s – each of whom had living memories. Well done The Rood sisters’ and thanks to Betty Hebditch, Charlie collar iron Stone, Bill Elliot, Jen Tucker and Chris Bolton. Phil Shillito introduced the idea of Tithe Maps and how these can be used in our work of understanding changes in the parish Printing by [email protected]

PARRETT TALK Issue 137 over time. As our work progresses we will aim to use new digital technologies in mapping, with a view that sometime down the line, some of what we do can be accessed via an App. This could, for example, give you access to photographs from the archive of old buildings, their location, the people who lived in them - and how they appear today. This theme was illustrated by Jen Tucker, who took us on a journey through the parish using Now & Then photographs. In some we have been able to get old photographs with named people, or who are known in living memory. This part of the event caused a lot of conversation and seemed to go down well so is an approach which could be built upon and repeated. Off to War - introduced the research which has been going on over the past two years with a view to linking all those who went off to WW1 from the parish The Rood family’s with the buildings from which they left. branding iron In some cases the buildings are no longer standing. Such was illustrated through Hugh Male’s contribution. This took us on a film journey, from the burial plot of his uncle Ed in the war cemetery in France to the very spot in Little Lane where his uncle was born and brought up. Hugh ends the film standing in what is now an orchard, on the spot where the family’s house stood. He did this using an old family photograph (taken when his uncle is about 7 years old) and there they are in Little Lane. If you walked down Little Lane

Kingsbury Episcopi Primary School Autumn First Half Term 2016 We have had a wonderful first half term at school. So far we have had a “Dahlicious” dress up day where everyone dressed up as their favourite characters to celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday. That was on the 23rd September. On 13th September it was harvest and the school supported the Lord’s Larder by donating food. We also had the Reverend David Gent come in and talk to us about it. On the 30th September, Paul Stikland came into school to make pop-up bugs with us to put up in Yeovil Library. That night, the years 2 and 3 had a sleepover in a tipi on the school field. The first house assembly took place on 4th October with the

Parish Council Minutes September Meeting It was asked whether it was necessary for the street lights in the parish to be left on all night; surely it would save money if they were turned off between midnight and 2am. There were mixed opinions as to whether it would be a good idea or not but the Clerk would contact the County Council to ask the question. The issue of speeding traffic along Folly Road was also raised. The Clerk would contact the County Council to ask for a Speed Indicator Device to be placed on that road to monitor the speed of traffic. Council were told that there was Japanese Knotweed in Little Lane, Stembridge. The Clerk would make enquiries as to what can be done before it spreads further. Highways were still at the designing stage as to what works they will carry out at Deadlands. They were still monitoring the area and if they feel there is any safety issues there they will deal with it. Councillors were given a very informative talk by Adrian Wills regarding the 'Somerset Vernacular Building Research group'. An article would be placed in the Parrett Talk. The Clerk is to report the large pot hole opposite the Lower Burrow junction and also the drain on Hill Drove which is still causing problems. October Meeting Some residents are now extremely disappointed that they cannot see the church clock because of the overgrown trees in the churchyard, and have asked that the Parish Council look into decreasing the height of the trees. As the trees are not under the Parish Council’s responsibility but the Parochial Church Council’s, then their letter would be passed on to them. Highways have now stated that they will be putting in a 'culverted ditch system' and the work would be carried out between January and March 2017. The Clerk would clarify exactly what that work entails, as the new pipes that have already been put in place could still be used.

Note The clock weight winding was electrified a few years back so no manual winding now, but making it keep exact time is another challenge!

Discussions were ongoing with the Licensing Manager at SSDC, regarding the Community Licence. With the new Community Building needing a licence in its own right, and there being several premises that no longer need to be part of the Community Licence, now was the time to revamp it. The Licensing Manager had stated that the Personal Licence holder for the Community Licence should really be a Parish Councillor and as Cllr Cox had recently obtained his Personal Licence he would become the Premises Supervisor for the Community Licence. Cllr Aparicio volunteered to be stand in when, and if, necessary as she also held a Personal Licence. Enquiries had been made as to the speed of Broadband in Stembridge. Unfortunately the nearest BT cabinet for them is in East lambrook. The Clerk would contact the 'Connecting Devon and Somerset' project team to enquire whether Stembridge would be able to have their own cabinet at some point to speed the connection up. Cllr Langford did state that having joined Vodafone Superfast Network she was now achieving 12-13mbs. A response had been received regarding the street lights staying on all night. The County Council have a project in hand to replace over 18K street lights with the Low Wattage LED's, these lights can burn all night with approximately 66% energy savings per unit. They also confirmed that they do not use part night lighting (where they turn off alternate lights) as the LED's were more cost efficient. The new Community Building was still making good progress; the roof should be in place before the end of October. Plans are now underway for the celebrations on its completion next year. A week of activities is planned for the week beginning 8th April. A response had been received from Wessex Water regarding the ongoing problem with foul smelling water coming from a drain on Hill Drove. Apparently residents in that area had already been contacted and advised not to put cat litter or rags

We don’t have a date for this article originally published in the Western Gazette but Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee was in 1887 and, as it states that the clock celebrates its 100th anniversary, it must have been published in 1987. It comes from Charlie Bishop’s wonderful scrap book which became the inspiration for the first of the village history books. If anyone has an original of the cutting please contact Parrett Talk as this is taken from a poor quality photocopy.

down the drains, following a recent blockage there. They will be carrying out repair work but unfortunately one manhole has been built over so they are arranging with the owner to carry out the works. The Council had previously been asked about replacing our village name signs with something more pleasant to look at such as the big hamstone that other local villages have. The Clerk has made enquiries as to the costs of these which would be approximately £1000 each. A cost that the Parish Council did not feel they could justify, as quite a few would be needed to be purchased to cover all the parish. Cllr Aparicio would make some enquiries as to what other alternatives there might be. It was however suggested that perhaps the parishioners would like to comment on what they would like to see and also whether there any local people or businesses who would be prepared to sponsor any new signs. Please contact the clerk if you wish to comment or have any idea: [email protected] The footpath from Pulpittsway to Stembridge is being churned up by horses again. This is not a bridleway and horses should therefore not be using it. The Clerk will contact the Rights of Way team at County Council about having Bristol gates put there together with the necessary signs.
