Olivar, Victoria Granted Permanency Status years in the DLSU Library have undoubtedly helped me expand and explore my potentials in the field. All the efforts and contributions have been worthwhile. I am definitely looking forward for more fruitful years in the Institution. My sincerest gratitude to all the people who never stopped exploring possibilities for my case to be considered. They are the “true” Lasallian who value every person’s worth and would never let anyone be undignified. ANIMO Lasalle!”

Juliet Olivar (left) and Karen Victoria (right), happy to be a Lasallian. After three years of commendable performance, Julieta Olivar (Acquisitions) and Karen Cecille Victoria (Cataloging) were granted permanent employment status effective 1st Term, AY 2011-2012. Julieta Olivar or Juliet, as she is fondly called, began her career in DLSU as a project librarian of the Social Development Research Center (SDRC) for 5 years. Then she worked as a librarian for the Graduate School of Business Library of the then, De La Salle Professional Schools, Inc. When the Graduate School for Business (GSB) was integrated back to the University during the 1st Term, AY2008-2009, Juliet became one of the DLSU librarians serving the GSB Library at the RCBC Campus, Makati City. In the process of job rotation, Juliet was transferred to the Library on Taft Avenue on the 2nd Term of AY 2010-2011, as a cataloger. She was assigned at the Acquisitions Section that same academic year. Juliet had gone a long way since her first employment as a project librarian. She had proven dedication in every undertaking handed over to her. She has fully imbibed the Lasallian way of dealing with work and people. On her permanency, she has this to say, “[I] want to say thank you [to my superiors and co-workers] for the time, energy and effort. Most of all, I appreciate the support given me. I am proud to be part of the DLSU-Library family.”

Karen Cecille Victoria had been a very simple lady when she first stepped inside the Main Library in May, 2006. She came in to take the requisite examination for employment of the Graduate School of Business of the then, De La Salle Professional Schools, Inc. She successfully passed the examination which marked the beginning of her relationship with De La Salle University. Together with Julier Olivar, Karen became an employee of the University in AY20082009. She became an associate librarian of the Brother Benedict Learning Center where she cataloged audiovisual materials, prior to her assignment at the Main Library as Public Programs Librarian. On the 3rd Term of AY 2009-2010, she became a fullfledged cataloger, and was appointed the head of the Cataloging Section of the Library, the following year.

Juliet and Karen were made permanent following the provisions under the 2008 Faculty Manual, which requires the following (among others): 1) completion of a masters degree or its equivalent; 2) competence of professional work as attested to by the head of the unit; 3) academic or professional development; 4) effective performance as evaluated by superiors and peers; and, 5) research capability as demonstrated by scholarly outputs/publications.

For her undeniable charm, Karen was singledout to personify LORA, the Library’s premier reference service. During the Awards Night held last December 2010, which was held to recognize exemplary performances of the library staff, she was multiply-awarded Face of the Day, Miss Photogenic and Most Promising New Comer. But Karen is not only gifted with charm but is as much a Jul ie hard-worker, as well. As a cataloger, she DLS t and Kar U en possesses speed and accuracy, traits that enjo ying are valuable to the Library craft. On her permanency, Karen says, “My three

Fresnido, Frias Complete Leadership and Management Development Program Module 1 A Leadership and Management Development Program (LMDP) was offered to incumbent and potential administrators of the University. This program aims to hone the leadership and management knowledge, values and skills of administrators to enable them to engage meaningfully in leadership roles within the university. The program consists of the following modules: (1) Foundations of Educational Leadership and Management; (2) Academic Management; (3) Service Operations in Educational Institutions; (4) Resource Management; and, (5) The University in a Globalizing Society. On the 3rd Term of AY2010-2011, two librarians, Ms. Ana Maria B. Fresnido,

Director, and Ms. Willian S.A. Frias, Assistant Director for Support Services, were invited to join the LMDP. They took up the first module, which was composed of several sessions with different lecturers, namely: The Call to Leadership, Theories of Leadership, and Team Dynamics/Teamwork in Organizations by Br. Ricky Laguda, FSC; 2) Leadership vs. Management and Organizational Culture by Dr. Roberto T. Borromeo; 3) Management Ethics and Personal Wellness, Spirituality and Organizational Effectiveness by Sr. Teresa P. Yasa; The Lasallian Leader: Leadership in Lasallian Institutions by Dr. Carmelita I. Quebengco, AFSC. The Program that started on January 10, 2011 ended with a 2-day

integrating session on April 18-19, 2011 at Capuchin Retreat House, Lipa Batangas. This module has been quite an experience to the two participants. They were able to open new networks of acquaintances, work with other Lasallian leaders, and learn and understand new theories on leadership. They were able to evaluate what kind of leaders they are, at the same time assess their capabilities, weaknesses and strengths as leaders. Most of all, they get to know a Lasallian leader more: how he thinks, how he decides, and how he feels. During the integrating session, they were able to form their own leadership philosophy, which will guide them as they go along their career paths.

Enhancing Competence of Professional Librarians: an echo report by Yolanda Odsinada and May Laureno-Cajes

The ABC-RST InfoSpecialists Co. conducted a three-day Seminar entitled: “Enhancing Competence of Professional Librarians: Trends in Organization, Management and Use of Library and Information Resources.” It was held last March 31,-April 2, 2011 at the Opal Function Room of Hotel Supreme Convention Plaza, Magsaysay Avenue, Baguio City. The seminar sought to achieve the following objectives: 1. Update participants on changes in library processes and services brought about by the new information and communication technologies; 2. Enhance skills and maximize use of ICT’s in library services; 3. Foster smooth interpersonal relationships that will ensure customer satisfaction; 4. Introduce and discuss features of Resource Description and Access (RDA), the cataloguing tool that replaced AngloAmerican Cataloguing Rules (AACR); compare AACR and RDA; inform professional librarians how machine readable cataloguing (MARC) works in the context of RDA; 5. Teach participants on how to best manage library and information resources particularly digital resources; 6. Show participants how to develop research instructional guides such as brochures, podcasts, webcasts, etc; and; 7. Inform participants how the social media may be used to promote and enhance reference and use of library and information resources. The following topics were discussed during the Seminar:

Best Practices in Assessing Subscription to Electronic Resources by Professor Salvacion M. Arlante (University LibrarianUniversity of the Philippines, Diliman) Professor Arlante explained the issues pertaining to and challenges confronting information access and selection criteria for subscription to electronic resource such as the readiness of librarians to undertake Electronic Resource Management Systems (ERMS), cross border access to online journals, multilevel marketing and or promotion of academic journals, access issues, licensing, effective renewal management, user needs and expectations, and dearth of journal publications on some disciplines and areas of studies among others. In the end, by way of a caveat, she underscored the importance of fulfilling the mission in resource acquisition, the “most important criteria when considering acquisition of e-resource is whether it serves the mission, goals and objectives of the library. Best Practices in Managing Electronic Resources by Ms. Eva B. Brillo (Head Librarian, Saint Paul College, Quezon City) Ms. Brillo discussed the impact of electronic resources on Library Management in the delivery of information to the users of the service. Further, she noted that the library users now a day expect delivery of information in various formats regardless of time and location, adding that libraries have accepted electronic resources as a major information resource in their collections if only to meet such expectations and to provide better and instantaneous services. She called attention to the challenges that confronted the managers, namely staffing, workflow, licensing, and marketing of its resources. Furthermore, the speaker exhorted the participants to re-examine and streamline the library structure and guidelines, and continually upgrade its technology in light of the technological changes.

Enhancing Reference and use of Resources Through Social Media by Ms. Marian S. Ramos (College Librarian-University of the Philippines, Diliman) Ms. Ramos presentation featured application of Library 2.0 in enhancing reference services. Some of these Library 2.0 applications popularly known and adapted by some libraries she expounded on are the blogs, wikis, tagging, RRS feed, media sharing, virtual worlds, second generation web based services, social bookmarking and resource sharing, among others. Accordingly, applications of Library 2.0 enable libraries to become more relevant, to increase library’s visibility and web presence (not just library’s website), to reach potential patrons, to offer service to patrons anywhere they want and most of all to make the library to be the first choice for high-quality reference service. In her concluding remarks she stated that “Web2.0 is only a tool, and like every other tool, it has its place, its strengths, and its weaknesses; Library 2.0 are no more “THE answer” to all library transactions. Developing Research Instructional Guides by Ms. Marian S. Ramos (College LibrarianUniversity of the Philippines, Diliman) Ms. Ramos traced the evolution of creating research instructional guides in the library using new technologies, such as webcasting, podcasting, and online brochures, demonstrating their applicability and usefulness to academic libraries and pointing out how they can bring about and improve information literacy among library users and its potential users in using library resources and services effectively. Background and Introduction to Resource Description and Access by Mr. Rodolfo Y. Tarlit (University Librarian-University of the Philippines, Diliman) Mr. Tarlit spoke on the recent development in cataloging rules such as shift Enhancing competence... to page 6

On-trial Databases at the DLSU Library

Some databases that are currently on-trial at the De La Salle Library The Library, through its Collection Development Librarian and coordinator of the Technical Services, Ms. Janice Peňaflor, subscribed to the trial access of several online databases as one of its mean in evaluating prospective acquisitions. Royal Society of Chemistry, a database that offers journals and e-books in chemical sciences, is first on the list of databases on trial on the month of March. The Library asked for a trial access on this database for possible strengthening of the Library’s collection in hard sciences. Springerlink is another database in trial. Springerlink offers complete access to scientific, technical and medical publications of journals, e-books, e-references, book series, etc. The Library hopes to supplement its collection in Business with this database.

Journal Citation Report (JCR) is another database on trial. Unlike the first two databases, this does not include information from books and journals. This is a tool that allows researcher to critically evaluate and compare scholarly and technical journals using citation data drawn from over 7,500 journals being published in over 60 countries. The Library anticipates its use in the University in terms of tracking down faculty research outputs, and their performances in terms of citation ratings. Because of its specialized subject coverage, EIU Country Data is an on-trial database which is only accessible to School of Economics faculty members. This database provides economic indicators and forecasts. It covers 317 series for 201

countries, as well as 45 regional aggregates, running from 1980. Trial access to databases usually takes place from two weeks up to 3 months, depending on what the supplier/ publisher will grant the Library. After the trial period, the Collection Development Librarian/Technical Services Coordinator asks for usage report from the supplier or publisher, at the same time, she solicits inputs from the Academic Community regarding their use of the database on-trial. She consolidates the inputs and the usage reports and makes recommendation to the Library Director. In some cases, the University Library Council (ULC) decides if the on-trial database merits subscription/ acquisition or not.

RDA and MARC by Mr. Rodolfo Y. Tarlit (College Librarian-University of the Philippines, Diliman)

It is indeed a welcome opportunity to attend this seminar. We have learned the state of the art technologies which we could apply to DLSU library to ensure a more effective and efficient delivery of reference services.

Enhancing competence... from page 5 from Anglo American Cataloging Rules2 (AACR2) to Resource Description and Access (RDA), elaborating on the RDA’s historical background; purpose & scope; key features; objectives & principles; and its structure. RDA and AACR Compared by Ms. Joan Esposado (College Librarian-University of the Philippines, Diliman) Comparing Resource Description and Access (RDA) to Anglo American Cataloging Rules2 (AACR2), Ms. Esposado presented the advantages and disadvantages of both

His presentation dwelled on the bibliographic record, clarifying such matters as MARC to RDA mapping; RDA”s background and overview; and a summary of commonly used MARC 21. A panel discussion, which was moderated

We look forward to attending seminars such as this in future.

Gabi Speaks for PAARL The Philippine Academic and Research Librarians or PAARL, held the PAARL National Summer Conference on the theme: “Library Tourism and Hospitality: The Business of Endearing Philippine Libraries and Information Services to Publics” held in Roxas City from April 27-29, 2011. Gabi Bongalos took on the topic, “Archives Tourism and Hospitality”. In an effort to fulfill the objectives of drawing a landscape of archives, promoting archives services, and reiterating the essentials of archives, Bongalos recounted the domains and practices of the profession and offered some lessons learned working in and with the archives. The session, somehow, goes farther than a view of archives and of the technical work critical to archiving; towards the more significant role of archives and archivists in preserving the documentation of the past for a reliable history and heritage. In effect, there is more to Archives than sorting out dusty records, obsession for tagging records, or carrying heavy boxes. Archives is not a junk room. It is a place of history and power. Monumental records reside in the archives. Consciously or otherwise, archives have been of service to almost everyone. Needless to say, there exist an essential in human nature to remember the past and celebrate memories. PAARL organization was founded in 1973. DLSU Manila Librarian Mr. Roderick B. Ramos and DLSU Dasmariñas Library Director Ms. Sonia M. Gementiza serve as President and Vice President, respectively, for 2011. Starting this year, the PAARL Board adopted “PAARL: Fully-Engaged, Member-Driven Association” as its tagline.
