Carrie Mills, USA

3 How long has Adam had his allergy? A Since he was very young. B For a few minutes. C Since the summer.

Every time Carrie comes into contact with water, she gets a painful rash. She’s been allergic to water for over nine years, and the allergy has changed her life. Carrie used to love swimming, but she can’t go in the pool or the sea now, and she can only have a very quick shower in the morning. Luckily, it doesn’t rain much in Los Angeles, where Carrie lives, but she always keeps an umbrella in her car.

4 Where does Adam wear suncream? A Only outside. B At home and outside. C Only at home. 5 What happens only during the winter? A It gets dark early. B Adam plays with his friends. C Adam goes to school.

Adam Evans, Scotland Adam has been allergic to the sun since he was a baby. He gets terrible sunburn when he goes out in daylight, and huge blisters start to appear on his skin after a few minutes. In the summer, Adam needs to wear a special helmet and protective clothes when he goes outside, and he wears very strong suncream every day, even at home. However, life is easier for Adam during the gloomy Scottish winter. He can go out in normal clothes to play football with his friends after school because it gets dark early.

Hi Dani, Thanks for your email. It was great to hear from you. Sorry I haven’t written for ages, but I’ve been in hospital. I broke my arm while I was cycling to school on the last day of term. I was there for two days, and now I’ve been at home for about a week. So how are things with you? What have you been up to in the holidays? I haven’t done much because of my arm. I’ve spent a lot of time at home watching DVDs. My sister has been with me most of the time, so I haven’t been too bored. How are all your family? My brother’s really happy at the moment because he’s passed his driving test. My parents have bought him a car, so he doesn’t have to borrow theirs now. Lucky for some! Anyway, that’s all for now. Write soon with your news.

Reading challenge ? r e m m u s A brilliant Part 2

The next day, Melanie wakes up with a sore throat. The pool was very cold yesterday. ‘I hope I haven’t got a cold,’ she thinks. She gets up, has a shower and gets dressed. Her parents have already gone to work. She goes into the kitchen to have breakfast, but there’s no milk in the fridge. She sees a note on the table from her mum: Melanie is pleased at the thought of a nice breakfast. She puts the money in her pocket, picks up her keys and leaves the flat.

Sorry, no milk. Can you buy some? Money on the table. New café on the corner is excellent. Have breakfast there. Love, Mum

Melanie decides to sit outside the café. When the waiter comes, she thinks she recognizes him. ‘Do I know you?’ she asks. ‘I’m not sure,’ he says. ‘Do you go to Wood Green School?’ ‘Yes, I’m in Year 11.’ ‘And I’m in Year 12. I’m Steve.’ ‘I’m Melanie.’ ‘Nice to meet you, Melanie,’ says Steve. ‘What would you like to order?’ ‘I’ll have a coffee and some toast, please,’ Melanie says. After a few minutes, Melanie decides to move so that she can sit in the sun. She doesn’t realize that Steve is standing behind her. As she gets up, she knocks into him and the coffee spills all over his arm. Steve cries in pain and drops the cup. A waitress has seen the accident and runs over. ‘Quick, let’s put some cold water on your arm before you get a blister,’ she says, giving Melanie an angry look. Steve and the waitress disappear into the café. Melanie is very embarrassed. ‘What should I do now?’ she thinks.
