Should a provider use this term, he or she must be queried for clarification. Infections resistant to antibiotics require the use of an additional code for any associated drug resistance only if the infection code does not identify drug resistance (Z16 category, resistance to antimicrobial drugs if the infection code does not identify drug resistance). ICD-10-CM introduces the seventh character that describes type of encounter, or the state of a fracture’s healing and any sequela. Some codes in this chapter will have the seventh character applied.
