Landscape Architecture has given me a chance to live and work globally. I’ve worked on a wide range of projects worldwide from Riga, London, Istanbul and Dubai. Having lived, studied and worked in London for about 6 years I departed on a bicycle in August, 2013. I’m currently in Bangkok having cycled over 20,000 km with two longer stops to work in Istanbul and Dubai.

“PSCC vision responds to the needs of present and future generations through fully integrated and sustainable design, respecting cultural sensitivities, encouraging the population to adopt an active and live healthy lifestyle. Life Oasis, a wellness city in Jeddah with the cultural centre located at the heart of the community as a landmark iconic building.” (pscc.com.sa/ en/about-us). Cracknell was asked to develop 7 different areas of the ~250 HA masterplan. Well over a kilometre long waterfront promenade was one of the key areas which I designed up to schematic concept level. Formal language is inspired by the Saudi Arabia’s coast where sandy islands ‘melt’ off the coast. The promenade is saturated with lush landscape and various activities. The main theme here is wellness therefore areas for outdoor fitness and kid’s play are provided and emphasised. Many other features shape the promenade - kiosks, art installations, interactive waterfeatures, feature seating and planting, feature lighting, F&B areas, amphitheatre, floating screen, water taxis, shade structures, etc.

At the time of me joining Cracknell, a team called - Creative Team was established consisting of 4-5 people. We were involved in early project stages generating concepts and initial ideas to boost the creativity of the office. I’d typically work on 2-3 different projects a week. They’d vary in size and type dramatically. The ideas were taken over and developed by other teams (at the time Cracknell was about 160 people strong). This was very fast paced and demanding but very efficient process. I had a chance to work on about 20 different projects during my 8 months stay at Cracknell. Selected images are only a few highlights from the pile of work I managed to produce.

Culture Village by Dubai Properties Group, is intended to be a world-class destination that mixes old-world pleasures and entertainment with a modern, sophisticated ambiance. It is divided into the residential, retail and commercial zones and located along the shoreline of the Dubai Creek. The architecture offers a unique mixture of ancient Arabic traditions with Dubai design. This blend, the finest of old and new, has resulted in Dubai Culture Village. I was introduced to the project in its late concept stage and asked to rethink the overall approach as wells as the elements of landscape design. I introduced irregular hard surface bands which would connect diiferent spaces along a very long water promenade. Landscape elements such as seating, planters, lighting, waterfeatures would emerge out of these bands creating a feel of one coherent, consistent palette of landscape design.

Trailer Houseboat

While travelling I had a chance to stay on a shabby 8 m long boat for a few days back in Amsterdam. Fascinated by the lifestyle, spatial arrangement, living on the water, mobility and other aspects I decided to design a houseboat for myself. A few thousand cycle-kilometres and a couple of months later I had a chance to study Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering as a guest student at Istanbul’s Technical University. A few more months later I was finished with a concept for a trailer houseboat which is suitable for canal living and on land. Equipped with wind generator, solar panels, electric engine it would support off-grid lifestyle. Compost toilet and rain water collection also support the idea of low impact lifestyle. The project is very much alive. I’ve been collecting case studies while travelling and developing the plans further.

Redesign of a Public Park

The park is unique for the 8 metres level change across it’s relatively short length (100m). The idea is to cut it horizontally as if it was a layer cake every 150 mm. The layers form seating, steps, walls and the central feature - waterfall. Apart from the access road, buffer and entrance areas there are two key zones. Central area to the South with plaza, shade structure, waterfall, shallow pool and seating provide space for rest, gathering and activity whereas the greener, more biodiverse area higher up to the North is for recreation and views with plenty of seating. Two geometries were developed. Curvilinear creates very smooth, flowing experience in contrast with the rectilinear one which appears much more ordered and sharp.

Island 2 is a sister or brother island of Island 1 (see the next spread). This was the second phase of works on Pluit City in Jakarta. Island 2 is slightly larger (200 Ha). Although it comprises very similar types of open spaces as on Island 1, it is designed to avoid repetition and introduce another - unique Island to the planned archipelago. Same constraints apply here - water retention, shade, lushness, edges. Same as island 1 there is a Central Park. Introduced topography is the element that differentiates Island 2 Central Park from Island 1. Topography creates valleys, views, play-slopes, program within it, etc. Although I was predominantly occupied with designing Central Park, I was overseeing and coordinating works on the entire Island from the early stages when the Island was shaped in team with SOM.

Pluit City Island 1 is a proposed 160 HA reclaimed island in Jakarta Bay North of the historic town centre, for a population of 70,000 residents. The project comprises of a masterplan by SOM with Shop Houses (Ruko), Shopping plaza, office towers, apartment blocks and beach houses. The open spaces are a prominent factor in developing a rich lifestyle and green place to live. A large central park, 90,000 sqm ‘stitches’ together the soft green eastern edge with the harder urban western edge and provides an opportunity for a contemporary park not only for the Island, but for Jakarta. In addition, the development provides a number of community parks, with play areas, club houses, swimming pools and sporting areas. Plazas with extensive and dynamic shade structures are provided for markets, food stalls and weekend events. With 6,000 metres of waterfront, the treatment of the edge is a major part of the design of the island. MSP design utilized this transition between land and water as recreational linear parks, with bicycle circuits, plazas for cafes, and methods to drawing people close to the water edge. An innovative approach to extend the use of existing Mangroves is proposed. Working closely with SOM and the client the landscape is a key factor in the project’s water management system. Each year, during the rainy season, the volume of water is significant. Over 5% of the island is occupied by different water bodies to hold and purify storm and grey water that gets recycled back into the use of community. This amenity plays a unique element in the design of the Central Park and how landscape program is intertwined amongst canals, wetlands and water play areas. I was the lead designer on the project. I developed detailed concept designs for majority of key spaces (Central Park, Eastern Edge, Southern Plaza), water strategy, mangrove planters etc. I was coordinating work with architects and the client. I presented the work at various meetings and workshops in London and Jakarta.

Mixed Use Landscape

Xintiandi is the reatil area to the South of Pluit City Island 1 (see the previous spread). This will be the first area to be built as part of the 160 HA reclaimed Island designs. MSP are comissioned to develop landscape designs up to detailed design stages. I developed a couple of areas that are taken further by the core team. The bridge walk / gardens connect 2 side of the plot and create a floating space in the middle. Lush planting iis contained in architectural planters as this area sits on top of the parking garage. A wide set of steps with planting and seating are proposed to connect the ground level with the parking level.

Southbank Centre will undergo major refurbishment works and will see 2 new building blocks added to its complex 3 dimensional puzzle. Landscape plays important part at softening the old brutalist architecture and adding richness to the new blocks. Variety of gardens have been proposed that reflect the building program and structural constarints. I was only helping the core team with developing a couple of roofs and with scale + 3D modelling.

Landscape Masterplan

Feature Park

Landscape plays the key role at shaping this mixed use masterplan in Zigong, China. I developed initial concept idea that uses and celebrates the flow and dynamic character of the river. Curvilinear language crates interesting water edge spaces and brings landscape into more urban areas of the masterplan. It is linking / connecting / and creating ecological corridors that create a landscape network and integrates the site within the wider context. Sample areas were developed to describe the idea in 2 and 3 dimensions.

“Opened in Spring 2013, visitors are taken on a dynamic journey via a series of iconic mountain-shaped follies, plazas, greenery and water features to the proposed Vanke Golden City Development sales centre. The brief was to design a demonstration park and urban public realm to express a unique identity in order to market the future development. The vision was to create a strong connection between the setting of the site and the surrounding backdrop of the mountainous peaks. These elements provide the inspiration for the mountain pavilions, zigzag patterns, orchestrated terrain and the use of vivid colours (to contrast against the grey misty sky of Chongqing). On arrival from Fengxi Road, dancing red and orange sculptures line the entrance to draw people into the arrival plaza carpark. Each pavilion is strategically positioned along the zigzag path, leading pedestrians down the ‘mountain’, towards the sales centre area. The pavilions provide shade during the day and at night, are lit to create a spectacular glowing lattern effect. “ (www.landezine.com) I was involved in pre-concept stage of the project and did initial studies of the folies and park design as per images below. Later on it was developed all the way through to completion by other members of Martha Schwartz partners .

Furniture Design

Danish outdoor furniture company GH Form invited MSP to design a bench that they could manufacture and sell as part of their range of products. They mainly work with cast iron therefore I came up with a design that could similarily to bath tubs be cast in one piece of iron. Used manufacturing technique and material inspired me to come up with a strong animallike design with its main body and changable parts - armrests, backrests, lights, charging points etc.

KL TOWER LINEAR PARK Competition

An initial ideas competition prepared for a linear park connected to a proposed tower located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Climatic conditions (hot and humid throughout the year, and extreme monsoon seasons with heavy downpours) were critical in how the design could enable comfortable places for all conditions and ensure a sustainable and well used public realm. Providing shade and protection from the rain and elements was instrumental and became a strong armature for the big design expressions. The collection and re-use of water was also an innovative method to bring meaning to water features and to address storm water management. Two proposals were developed. I developed on of them. The scheme celebrates the geometry of the building and its facade treatment. The geometric pattern is also routed in Islamic and Malaysian culture. 1

Chicago’s coastline has long been shaped by three ambitions: protecting Lake Michigan, promoting economic growth, and creating spectacular civic spaces for the pleasure and enrichment of its people. These same ambitions inspired the team to create the PIERESCAPE: a world-class, 21st century waterfront experience with five uniquely imaginative episodes: 1 - Crossing the Water: Gateway Park is redesigned as an active urban landscape with new fountains, attractions, and constructed wetlands at its southern end. 2 - Taking it Over the Edge: The South Dock is dramatically transformed by the creation of a new Porch and the addition of Floating Piers that reorient Navy Pier to the sun, Lake Michigan, and Chicago’s skyline. 3 - Taking the Plunge: East End Park dissolves into the wild majesty of Lake Michigan among steam baths, cold pools, boulders and beaches. 4 - Getting Up to Get Down: Pier Park is reignited with a new undulating landscape surrounding the iconic Ferris Wheel and a new Shakespeare Theater. 5 - Going Through the Looking Glass: Crystal Garden is reimagined as a “wonderland” like play-scape connecting between Pier Park and the Children’s Museum. My main focus was put on the last 2 areas which I developed 2 and 3 dimensionally.

This is the next project phase after the initial concept ideas - see the following spread. The wood grain pattern could not be kept for a number of reasons therefore new ideas were needed. The Landscape concept for the plot R4b is derived from Korea’s rich culture of patchwork craft, ‘Jogakbo’ that uses shapes of different sizes, colours and materials and is translated to an urban scale through the orchestration of programmed landscape spaces.. The pattern for adjacent plot R4a is derived from architectural grid lines which form a pixelated pattern. Individual pixels are combined to achieve larger planting areas and functional open hard landscape spaces. They are combined to create and connect the programmatic elements and functional requirements of the scheme. The shapes are used to guide pedestrians throughout the space and to create places to gather, play, relax and participate. To read the pattern, a mix of surfaces and colours are used, such as foliage of plants, pink, blue and yellow flowers that change with the seasons; materiality of pavement from stone, rubber and artificial grasses and water features covered with the shining steel. Surfaces that adapt and change to create a dynamic three dimensional experience. All landscape elements such as waterfeatures, seating, lighting, play, etc. were uniquely designed to fit into the pattern and add to its 3 dimensionality. I was lead-designing, producing myself and coordinating production team in the final stages to deliver full schematic design package.

Yongsan International Business district is planned to be the new heart of Seoul. Masterplan designed by Daniel Liebeskind + Martha Schwartz Partners was divided in 18 plots and given to internationally renowned architects to design. MSP were commissioned to design the landscape component for 5 different plots. I was given to lead design combined plots R4a & R4b where 2 pairs of high rise towers were designed by MVRDV (Holland) and BIG (Denmark). Both architectural firms decided that the landscape should read as one and unite both plots. This formed the basis of the brief. Sloping topography and the need of easy flow between the plots triggered the idea of using wood grain pattern. This allows for play with topo lines and fluid bands of hard and soft landscape materials. The knots cater for program elements such as play, water, plazas etc. Top layer - forest is introduced with openings above the knots. This helps to bring back the human scale and hide the tall towers under the tree canopies. This is an individual piece of work. I was fully in charge of design including coordination and production.

London Business School is about to undertake significant transformation. New extensions are being planned with a roof garden on top of one of the new central blocks. Elevated planters with seating edges surround roof-lights and shape informal social areas. Outdoor caf has been proposed with areas for temporarily located dining tables and chairs.

Wayfinding Strategy & Signage Design

Tremough campus houses University College Falmouth + Exeter University and is set in a beatiful, hilly, rural landscape just North of a small Cornish town Penryn. The campus has listed historic buildings and it has gradually and chaotically grown in the last decade with a number of new buildings that are scattered around the site. The challenge was to come up with a wayfinding strategy that would unify the campus and design a simple and flexible signage suite that would transform the way how people understand and find their way through the site. A distilled wayfinding map was designed along with a set of signs cut out and bent from sheet metal as part of main proposals.

CLOUDS Shade Structure Design

Located in the middle of a desert Adam airport will be one of the new Oman regional airports. Gillespies were commissioned to design external spaces + develop a wayfinding & signage strategy and designs. Although I took part in designing initial landscape concepts my main focus was put on signage component. I developed wayfinding strategy + a signage suite that will be used as outline designs for other regional airports in Oman which will be built in the next few years.

Gillespies are delivering a masterplan for a new luxury town (Pyramid Heights) in outskirts of Cairo. The client wanted to see some fun within this design component. A straight forward and literal concept of a cloud was used here and well received by the client. A thin sheet is cut into a cloud-like shape with limited perforation for some light to go through creating light patterns on the ground. It is supported on poles but it is meant to give an impression that it is tied with ropes to the bench underneath.

One of the key elements of my wayfinding strategy was to build site specific landmark/feature signs that draw and guide people into the airport. Desert, sand, wind, erosion formed the inspiration for Adam gateway signage designs. The signs are meant to weather and erode with time. Fibre optics are to be used in the cladding to achieve their glow in the nightime.

Schematic construction drawings were produced and developed further by the local contractor.

Graphic Elements

I was given a brief to develop a series of graphic elements which would correspond to the overall design of Gardens developed earlier by Gillespies. The bench sits under a long row of lime trees and ‘underlines’ so called Lime Walk which is why the lime leave motif is integrated into design of the side panel graphic. Ornate pattern references the Victorian history of Gardens with stylised branches reflecting upon contemporary architecture of the bench. Also a simple way-finding map of the garden was developed and ‘printed’ with other pieces of information (history, warnings) on metal panels of a feeder wall which was to be placed at the entrance to the Gardens.

Nuclear Power Station

Extension of existing Sizwell powerstation has been planned. One of the challenges here is to integrate the site within the unique and protected coastal landscape. The other one is to make 13 Ha of internal hard landscape functional, human and aesthetically pleasing.

Located on a hilly site just outside Istanbul the site is to house a new residential area with main themes for the development being - art / living / culture. Literal - clich - inspirations from works of such artists as Piet Mondrian and Ben Nicholson have been used to propose art integration within the site. Works of local artists would replace the sketch proposed below. Inspirations are used to define both aesthetic and functional spaces for people to enjoy. Shade structures, box trees, water pools, planters etc. have been used to interpret famous paintings.

It was to have been built by its community, led by myself after an imagined lottery win; it would be a place where diversity is celebrated; a dynamic urban form with very few compositional rules and no aesthetic control, where nature and its chaotic character could thrive. M.Arch Urban Design Thesis SPREAD 2/2 At the centre of my proposals are the concepts of river transport and a massive inhabited crane that moves along the central spine playfully placing the assorted units. The urban form and public spaces were to be created and rearranged according to peoples’ needs. Lift-cranes would be installed, running along a snaky rail that defined the Island’s interior space. I would seed the landscape for the structuring of the space. An experimental part of the Island would be built for myself and my colleagues where our design principles for access and stacking would be tested by modelling and debate. I would provide a set of suggestive rules and form a local council, would welcome new people and leave it for them to proceed with the shaping of the Island.

Mudtown is the preface project of my Thesis project, ‘The Island’. The aspiration was to create a surreal and correal urban environment defined by the ecology, landscape and surrounding context of the site. The tidal rhythm, the mud with its di erent forms and the post-industrial site itself were the main inspirations of the project. My proposal was a sedimentary, continuous urban form growing out of the tidal mud; addressing my frustration that the di erent segregated institutionalized professions build their parts separately resulting in weak urban landscapes, lacking creative unification / integration. In my proposal the form and elements would keep evolving, mutating, disappearing and reappearing along the tidal forces; I envisaged the muddy mass capturing the surrounding context by swallowing trains, ships, aeroplanes and old pylon frames which would then be inhabited or would form bridges and other structures. At the same time transport links, activities and the programme of the area would all improve through integration.

Urabn Bench Design - International Competition

Seating design for a modern and multifunctional city square which would be used by a wide range of users. The product had to be robust, relatively cheap and had to meet Cradle to Cradle design standards. Reversible is unique with its adjustable backrest (6 di erent positions) and ability to face two of its sides thus improving the integrity of city square’s users. It is a modern, playful, comfortable seating element which brings people closer. 2|3

Reversible is made out of metal and wood plastic composite materials which are to be 100% recycled. It can be assembled as a single seat or multi- seat bench according to the layout and use of a square. Sides are to be bespoke and unique to each location - sqaure.

The site is located on the northwest edge of Ipswich city centre and forms the end of the town’s high street. An under croft spiral car park built in the 1970s lies at the centre of the site. The Crown Court building and Wolsey Theatre are located immediately outside the site’s boundaries. A new retail superstore is proposed by the developer and architects. The old spiral car park is due to be refurbished and a vibrant civic plaza created on top of it forming an attractive frontage to the surrounding and proposed buildings. As part of the existing site, the spiral represents a very powerful element in the overall planning for this space. The concept draws inspiration from the spiral and puts additional emphasis on its motion. Drawing from the relationship with the adjacent theatre, the intention is to create an external performance space which would counterbalance the internal performance spaces within the theatre and by doing so make culture and the arts more accessible for the public. The design of the space includes a new caf /gallery building, its roof forming an amphitheatre, a performance stage / fountain, an extended sculptural railing which functions as a support system for spotlights, and benches which appear to emerge from the surface with shallow streams of water emerging from beneath them.

International Competition

Located 12km west of Dublin’s city centre, Adamstown is a new urban district being created on a green field site adjoining the main Dublin-Kildare railway line. The development will eventually provide new housing for about 25,000 people over the next 10 to 15 years. An integral part of the structure will be its four parks, of which Airlie Park and Tandy’s Lane Park were the subject of this competition. The brief of the competition included requirements for 2 gaelic playing fields, 4 tennis courts, 4 five-a-side playing pitches with changing and shower facilities, an education zone, a children’s playground linked to a cr che, a small car park, a park management building, a caf / gallery and a visitors centre. I developed a concept of a TREE rooted in the centre of Adamstown where the major commercial developments and the train station are located. The tree’s trunk was to be formed by a boulevard connecting the station with the park, its branches by paths allowing circulation through the Airlie Park, and its foliage by mounds located between the paths/branches. The structure of the paths is inspired by the structure of a tree. The bark was to be represented by edging materials and specially designed timber benches would grow out from the bark at several places along the paths/branches. The living part of the tree was to be formed by water and di erent types of planting within the boulevard and path system.

Landscape Strategy

As part of this study and the brief, the main proposal is to lower the A2 road and build over it to create a valuable development corridor not far from the city centre. The possibility is that through extending the urban patterns which surround the development corridor, the urban fabric could be ‘sewn’ back together to restore the integrity of this eastern portion of the city. My role within the project’s design team was to come up with a landscape strategy that would be bold and would stand out. The linearity of the site led me to idea of a string of jewels with the string being the new, calmer road above the A2 and the jewels the open spaces. Instead of creating typical open spaces where many elements are implemented next to each other the proposal suggests to create a number of unpacked individual elements standing on their own much bolder and stronger, each of them being special for someone.

The memorial of Balu Kapi (Brothers’ Cemetery) (1924 – 1936) in Riga is famous in Europe for its unique synthesis of landscape architecture, architecture and sculpture. It was erected for the soldiers killed in World War I and II. The brief for the project was to produce an external lighting concept for the end part of the ensemble which includes the monument of Mother Latvia and the far wall. I thought that the brief was incomplete and that the main emphasis must be put on soldiers sleeping in the earth rather than the sculptures themselves. My idea comprised a lighting scenario occurring every half an hour and lasting 1 minute and 10 seconds. For the rest of the time (28 minutes and 50 seconds) very simple and static light has been foreseen. The scenario starts with a thin red light membrane covering the entire main field (21 seconds). It begins from sculptures called Wounded Horse-riders and Killed Brothers symbolizing a sea of blood. When the field has been red for 10 seconds Mother Latvia starts to cover the field and her sons with her white blanket. It appears as a white stripe symbolizing the Latvian flag which grows in width until it covers the entire field. Then the blanket falls on the sons and the light fades away.

International Landscape Design Competition

The brief was to establish a cultural and historical commemoration place in Koknese, Krievkalna Island, for those Latvians who su ered and died under the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century (losses about 600 000 people). Within this context, the memorial site should symbolically gather all Latvian souls lost in different parts of the world, showing the price that has been paid for the freedom of Latvian nation and for the independence of the state. As part of the proposal the 600 000 people were divided into groups, with each being given one specific symbol. The mass planting of sunflowers represents the sun and the hope of the many people who suffered or were lost. Within the sunflower field other symbols are incorporated having straight axis/view lines towards the tower of an existing church. Connection to this church reminds visitors that God has been always present, inviting spiritual reflection on the events. Various elements such as digital information displays, caf & visitors centre, and parking were also designed as part of the proposals.
