Dear 2013 Fall Graduation Candidates: Greetings and congratulations to today’s graduates and to the families and friends who’ve gathered here today to help you celebrate the remarkable achievement of earning your degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver. Completing this stage of your education represents a transformation: you now can present yourself to the world as a university graduate—someone who has spent hundreds of hours in study, researched paper topics late into the night, persevered through difficult courses and dared to dream of a better life. Transforming Higher Education, Transforming Lives, Transforming Communities—the theme of MSU Denver’s new marketing and branding effort—carries a powerful message. It outlines a complete cycle of transformation with three distinct components. MSU Denver is transforming higher education by enhancing traditional academics with useful career preparation and improved accessibility. With the most diverse student body of any four-year institution in Colorado, MSU Denver reflects most accurately the future population of our country. One of America’s strengths has always been its ability to recognize individual potential, develop that potential through education and then charge those who have benefitted from it to extend the same opportunity to others. As graduates, your lives will continue to be transformed by taking what you have learned here and using it to achieve professional success and stability. Your education has equipped you to meet future challenges with both wonder and realism, to take risks fearlessly but not foolhardily, and to enjoy success with generosity. You have the ability to fulfill your potential and transform your communities by using your MSU Denver education to improve your communities—sharing your abilities and energy with others, and thereby completing the cycle. As you head off to embrace your future, please remember that MSU Denver is here for you. You are graduates, but education is a lifelong process and you are always welcome back to refresh your knowledge and skills, or simply to learn for your own interest and enjoyment. After all, the cycle of transformation depends on constant renewal. Wishing you the best,
Stephen M. Jordan, Ph.D. President, Metropolitan State University of Denver

President’s Award Recipient: Katherine M. Miller Bachelor of Arts in women’s studies Bachelor of Arts in psychology Bachelor of Arts in history Katherine M. Miller, this year’s President’s Award recipient, gives true meaning to MSU Denver’s tagline: Lives Transformed. Her first attempt at college was riddled with failing grades, an abusive relationship, debilitating depression and alcohol abuse. “I never understood how lost I was until I found myself broke, unemployed, evicted from my apartment and nowhere left to go but home,” Miller says. “It took my parents a long year to get me back on my feet. It took me another year to decide that I wanted something better for myself.” Earning her bachelor’s degree in three disciplines with a GPA of 3.94 was something she never dreamed possible. Not until she arrived at MSU Denver and found the community that would soon feel like family. “I was terrified most of my first semester. My abusers’ words lingered; I still believed his voice in my mind when it told me I was stupid, worthless and incapable,” Miller says. But all that changed near the end of her first semester on the day her history professor handed back a paper: “Imagine my shock to turn to see ‘100%, best paper I’ve read on this subject by a student.’ I stayed after class to make sure it wasn’t a mistake,” Miller says. “Those words changed my life. I am so thankful that he saw goodness in me, so that I was able to see it for myself.” It was during her second semester that Miller became passionate about psychology and was asked to be a research and teaching assistant. “She truly embodies everything that is MSU Denver,” says Travis Heath, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology. “It wouldn’t surprise me if Katherine returned to MSU Denver with a Ph.D. and became one of my colleagues. She is that good.” And then Miller discovered women’s studies: “Within the first two weeks of my intro class, I knew I had found my community, my space to belong, my identity,” Miller says. For the Institute for Women’s Studies and Services (IWSS) alone, she helped found and establish the Clinical and Counseling Club, won a Student Leadership Award directing “The Vagina Monologues,” served as support staff for Feminist First Fridays, and completed an independent study that transformed the way IWSS supports teaching assistants. And that’s not even half of what she’s accomplished at MSU Denver. “In the 11 years that I have worked at the institute there are only a handful of students whose mark has altered our path,” says Arlene Sgoutas, Ph.D., associate professor and director for IWSS. “Ms. Miller is, without doubt, one of those students.” Miller plans to pursue a master’s degree in counseling and a Ph.D. related to women and gender studies. She hopes to continue her work for IWSS. “I’m a whole human being now. I have the confidence I was lacking and more self-awareness. I’m no longer afraid to take risks,” Miller says. “My mantra has been ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ I think I am here because I am supposed to be that change. If I can inspire one person to make a real difference, I think I will have fulfilled my goal.”

MSU Denver: Lives Transformed Graduation is the celebration of a marked transformation for every student; each has acquired the knowledge, skills and experiences that ready them to make meaningful contributions to the world beyond our campus. Metropolitan State University of Denver enrolled nearly 23,000 students in the fall, lending us more opportunity to help transform the lives of undergraduates than any other school in the state. And while we remain steadfast in our mission to provide students from all walks of life with high-quality, affordable, relevant education opportunities, MSU Denver is undergoing a transformation as well. We are constantly reevaluating, growing and looking for ways we can do things better, ways we can provide greater value to our students and, ultimately, to our community. As Colorado’s urban land-grant university located in the heart of the state’s largest metropolitan area, MSU Denver has leveraged its resources and roll-up-your-sleeves ethic to secure myriad partnerships so that we can better prepare our students to solve the pressing urban problems that face us today. It’s required shifting the way we view education and tailoring our programs to reflect that. This past year, more than 400 faculty, staff and students helped serve hundreds of Denver’s homeless through Project Homeless Connect, and our very own Center for Urban Connections fosters collaborative relationships with organizations such as the Mile High United Way, the Gathering Place and more. Examples of transformation can be found in the Hospitality Learning Center, Student Success Center and Center for Innovation. You can see it in our student body—the most diverse of any four-year institution of higher education in Colorado. Transformation also can be found in the results of a study published last year by the Colorado Department of Higher Education that showed MSU Denver graduates make more during their first year of employment than most other Colorado university graduates. In almost every corner of our campus—every department, every student group—you can find ways we are transforming Colorado communities and our future. MSU Denver is proud of the initiative and commitment our faculty, staff and students have shown to this cause. As we inch closer to our 50th anniversary in 2015, and look back on our history and forward on the legacy we’re working to create, we couldn’t be prouder of the school we’ve become, and of those who have helped define us.

Commencement Speaker: Ann Williams, Ph.D. U.S. Professor of the Year Professor of Modern Languages – French Ann Williams, Ph.D., professor of French, has been teaching courses in French language, literature and culture at Metropolitan State University of Denver since 1990. A Colorado native with a B.A. in English from Adams State University, a Diplôme d’Études Approfondies from the Université Lyon II in France and a Ph.D. in French from Northwestern University, Williams is an energetic supporter of foreign language learning and international studies. She often uses her own trajectory to show students how they can benefit from experiences provided through contact with languages and cultures different from their own. Her work on new approaches to the teaching of culture uses tools from earth science and emphasizes the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Her collaboration with an MSU Denver associate professor of geography resulted in the use of Google Earth and virtual tours in the teaching of culture. She has co-authored four college-level French textbooks and is currently involved in an online textbook project to facilitate student access to foreign language materials. Williams credits her students for inspiring and energizing her. “If they weren’t willing and ready to learn and excited about learning, I don’t think I would be doing what I do,” she says. “I encourage them to take risks. I understand that learning and speaking a foreign language is a challenge, and it requires that students set aside some of their preconceived notions. They understand that I really do believe that learning French gives them a new way of thinking about the world and a new way to articulate their thoughts.” Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education recently named Williams the 2013 Outstanding Baccalaureate Colleges U.S. Professor of the Year. Her other awards include the MSU Denver Faculty Senate Teaching Excellence Award, the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers Kris Wells Creativity Award, a McGraw-Hill/Glencoe Teacher of the Year award, the Excellence in Teaching Award and Young Educator of the Year.

Academic Attire Academic attire is modeled after monks’ clothing from the Middle Ages, when college faculty and students were members of religious orders. In England, the faculty of many colleges and universities still wear gowns, hoods and caps in the classroom. In the early 20th century, colleges and universities throughout the world adopted guidelines for the design and colors of academic attire. An institution may design and register special attire for its administrators and graduates, but it must conform to certain standards. Once registered, the design/color combination may not be duplicated by other institutions. The bachelor’s gown is most often black and has long sleeves that taper to a point in the back. It is always worn closed. At MSU Denver, women do not wear a white collar with the gown. The hood worn by the President’s Award recipient is an MSU Denver bachelor’s degree hood and is worn by this student to represent the graduating class. The gown signifying the master’s degree also is usually black and may be worn open or closed. It features oblong sleeves that hang below the wrist, tapering to a square cut with a cutaway arc. Although usually black, the doctoral gown is sometimes seen in colors—usually gold, purple, blue or red. The gown may be worn open or closed. The opening of the gown is faced with velvet, and three velvet chevrons run across its bell-shaped sleeves. The velvet facing and chevrons may be black or the color representing the graduate’s field of study. The hood varies in length and shape according to the degree it represents—the shortest and smallest signifies a bachelor’s degree, and the longest and widest signifies a doctoral degree. The velvet bordering the hood represents the graduate’s field of study. The satin lining of the hood, each a specific design, represents the college or university at which the individual earned his or her degree. The Oxford Cap, or mortarboard as it is better known, completes the attire. In place of the hood, bachelor’s candidates at MSU Denver wear colored tassels on the Oxford Cap to represent the academic department of the University from which they earned their degrees. Those holding graduate degrees usually wear black tassels, but those holding doctoral degrees may wear tassels of gold thread and may elect to wear a four-sided or eight-sided velvet tam instead of the Oxford Cap. Some universities have designated the Cambridge Cap—a large, soft beret—for their administrators and those who have earned a doctoral degree at that institution. President Stephen M. Jordan, Ph.D., is wearing the University’s chain of office, a visible symbol of his authority as the institution’s leader.
