Playwright  The author of a play

Actors  The people who perform the play

Acts  The units of action in a drama

Scenes  Acts are often divided into parts called this

Characterization  The playwright’s technique for creating believable characters

Dramatic Speech  Important in drama because it advances the story’s action

Dialogue  Conversation between or among characters

Monologue  A long speech that is spoken by a single character

Stage Directions  The sets of bracketed information that describe the scenery

and how the characters should move and speak

Set  The term used for the construction on stage that suggests the

time and place of the action

Scenery  Another word for set

Props  Small moveable items, such as a doctor’s clipboard or a

student’s notebook, that the actors use to make their actions look realistic

Comedy  A form of drama that often features everyday characters in

funny situations

Tragedy  Is often contrasted with comedy. The distinguishing feature

of a tragedy is that the events lead to the downfall of the main character.

Drama  A word that is often used to describe plays that address

serious subjects

Screenplays  The scripts for films

Teleplays  Scripts written for television

Radio Plays  Are written to be performed as radio broadcasts
