Gracias a nuestra comunidad por su apoyo A big thank you to our community for the outpouring of support El 30 de marzo nuestra comunidad del Casco sufrió una pérdida importante. Lo que sucedió después fue una generosidad increible. Con el apoyo de la comunidad y ONGs tales como Fundación Calicanto, APROJUSAN y Jesús Luz de Oportunidades, logramos brindarle a las 52 familias afectadas un apoyo basico de alimento y ropa. Se recaudaron más de $42,000 para apoyar en gastos de vivienda, bonos escolares, apoyo psicológico y más. No tenemos palabras para agradecerles a todos por su generosidad. El comité de vivienda social de AVACA está retomando el tema, a todos los interesados les invitamos a contactarnos para que se unan a este importante esfuerzo.
The 30th of March Casco suffered a terrible loss when a building on 9th St. caught fire leaving 52 families homeless. What followed was an unparalleled generosity. With the support from the community as well as NGOs including Fundación Calicanto, APROJUSAN and Jesús Luz de Oportunidades, we were able to assist families with basic needs baskets of food and hygiene products as well as clothing. Over $42,000 was donated to assist families with housing expenses, school vouchers, psychological support and more. Remaining donations were taken to Hogar Monerri in Chorrillo and to needy families in the interior of Panama. We cannot thank the community enough for their generosity. AVACA’s social housing committee will resume efforts in the community. We invite all those interested to contact us to join this important cause.

El día 23 de abril la Oficina del Casco Antiguo (OCA) invitó a una reunión sobre la reducción de tráfico en el Casco Antiguo. Fechas exactas de implementación están por anunciarse. Les mentrendemos informados.
On the 23rd of April AVACA the Office of Casco Antiguo (OCA) hosted a town meeting to present their proposed plan for implementation of pedestrian areas in Casco Antiguo. Exact dates for implementation have yet to be announced. AVACA will keep you posted.

AVACA llamó a la ANAM y se coordinó una línea calienta para reportes: Tel 6667-1047 Israel Tejada/ 6794-1213 Marcos Salabarría. Favor de reportarlo inmediatamente para poder reubicarlo.

On the 24th of April AVACA a resident of Casco reported a crocodile sighting in the beach area behind the Santa Familia building. AVACA has contacted ANAM and set-up a hotline for sightings: Tel 6667-1047 Israel Tejada/ 6794-1213 Marcos Salabarría. Please report any sightings immediately so that the crocodile may be relocated safely.
Convenio con Bomberos Agreement with Firemen in Casco
Dadas las circunstancias del 30 de marzo con el incendio en Calle 9, AVACA y residentes de la comunidad están trabajando con nuestro cuerpo de bomberos para firmar un acuerdo para capacitar a la comunidad en temas de reducción de riesgos asociados con incendios y asegurar que todo edificio esté equipado con extintores.
In light of the recent fire in Casco, AVACA and residents of the community are working on signing an agreement with our local fire station to collaborate in conducting community workshops on fire risk reduction as well as insuring that buildings are equipped with fire extinguishers.

Change in Trash Pick-up Times
Nos comunica la Autoridad de Aseo (AA) que recolectará los desechos del Casco Antiguo todos los días en horario de 6:00pm para residentes y 11:00pm para negocios. Nos piden que saquemos nuestros desechos en bolsas resistentes los dias de recolección y colaborar con la limpieza para que no se propague el dengue. We have been informed by the Autoridad de Aseo (AA) that trash will be collected from Casco Antiguo every day at 6:00pm for residents and 11:00pm for businesses. They have asked that our waste is thrown away in strong bags on collection days and to collaborate with cleaning to reduce the spread of dengue.

We recommend the documentary film: “The Fable”; a production of Fundación Calicanto which seeks to help us reflect on the value of our historical heritage and identity, as we confront ideas of the meaning of progress, such as the Cinta Costera 3. El miércoles 23 de abril, miembros de la comunidad tuvieron la oportunidad para escuchar a Pitu Jaén, candidata para representante de San Felipe, sobre qué hace una Junta Comunal y su propuesta para San Felipe. Los resultados de las elecciones nombraron a Mario Kennedy como ganador. Estaremos vigilantes de su gestión, que debe invertir $500K anual en infraestructura en San Felipe. On the 23rd of April members of the community had the opportunity to listen to Pitu Jaén, candidate for representative of San Felipe, where she explained the role of a community board and presented her proposal for San Felipe. Election results favored Mario Kennedy as the winner. We will remain alert to his resource management, as $500K should be invested annually in San Felipe.

Seminario Ley 136 3 abril/ 3 April 2014 Seminar on Law 136
El día 3 de abril AVACA realizó un seminario por el abogado Félix Wing sobre la ley 136 explicando los beneficios bancarios y fiscales sobre negocios y propiedades del Casco Viejo que empezó a regir desde el enero del presente año. Los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad para revisar la ley y hacer preguntas relevantes. Interesados en una copia de la ley in inglés, favor de contactarse con AVACA.

On the 3rd of April AVACA hosted a seminar with attorney Felix Wing on Casco Antiguo’s new incentive law. Participants had the chance to review specifics about the law and ask relevant questions. Those interested in a copy of the law in English, please contact AVACA.
