_____ 7.) Make a 2-column “T” chart like the one below and fill it in by answering the question and giving examples according to the instructions below. PRETERITE

PRESENT

Why do we use the preterite tense? (HINT: Generally, there is 1 main reason)

Why do we use the present tense? (HINT: Generally, there are 2 reasons)

Preterite is used to talk about what happened in the past as a single action or happened in a clearly-established frame of time.

Present is used to talk about what happens (generally) or what is happening now, without extra emphasis on the current moment. We use present progressive to add emphasis.

Give an example of an –AR verb in Spanish. hablar: hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, hablaron Give an example of an –ER or –IR verb. comer: comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comisteis, comieron Translate those examples to English. (I talked, you talked, etc.) (I ate, you ate, etc.)

Give an example of an –AR verb in Spanish. hablar: hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan Give an example of an –ER or –IR verb. comer: como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen Translate those examples to English. (I talk/am talking, you talk/are talking, etc.) (I eat/am eating, you eat/are eating, etc.)

_____ 23.) Create a SER and ESTAR review. Write out the conjugations in the present (you already wrote them earlier in the preterite). When would you use SER? When would you use ESTAR? Write 4 example sentences for each verb. SER: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son ESTAR: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están

*** see above for preterite *** *** see above for preterite ***

Ser is used to talk about things that DO NOT easily change (permanent situations.)  Rule-breaker: Ser is also used for talking about time. Estar is used to talk about things that DO easily change (temporary situations.)  Rule-breaker: Estar is also used to talk about the location of things, including buildings. We do NOT use estar to talk about the location of events. _____ 24.) Create a CONOCER and SABER review. Write out the conjugations in the present. When would you use CONOCER? When would you use SABER? Write 2 example sentences for each verb. CONOCER: conozco, conoces, conoce, conocemos, conocéis, conocen SABER: sé, sabes, sabe, sabemos, sabéis, saben Conocer is used to talk about knowing people or pets. It is also used when saying someone is familiar with something (such as a place, a book, a concept, etc.)  Sí, conozco al Señor Vargas, ¿por qué?  No conozco Tampa muy bien. ¿Me puede ayudar? Saber is used to talk about knowing factual information about something.  ¿Sabes mucho de ella? ¿Cuántos años tiene? ¿Qué le gusta hacer?  Lo siento, señora. No sé. NGSSS June 2011

_____ 25.) What are reflexive pronouns? Make a review section on reflexive pronouns and give examples of their use by writing 3 sentences in the present and 3 in the preterite tenses (6 TOTAL.) Use current vocabulary. (lavarse, cepillarse, estirarse, acostarse, despertarse, sentirse, ponerse, etc.) Reflexive pronouns are used to show when someone does something to his/her own self. Reflexive pronouns: me, te, se, nos, os, se Por la mañana, me cepillo los dientes. Siempre nos despertamos muy temprano.

¿A qué hora te acostaste? Ayer, me acosté muy tarde.

_____ 26.) There are irregular endings in the ‘yo’ form for –car, -gar, and –zar verbs in the preterite tense. Explain the rule and write 2 sentences for each type of verb (6 TOTAL.) (tocar, buscar, sacar, secar, chocar, apagar, llegar, colgar, almorzar, empezar, organizar, abrazar, etc.)

-CAR  -QUÉ -GAR  -GUÉ -ZAR  -CÉ

_____ 27.) Why do we use the present progressive tense? Answer this and then write two example sentences for two –AR verbs and two more an –ER and an –IR verb (4 TOTAL.) (Hint: what helping verb do you use with this tense? What form will the second verb have?) (hablar, jugar, almorzar, escuchar, comer, escribir, beber, correr, salir, pelearse, afeitarse, etc.) Present progressive is used to describe what is going on right now. This is not normally used to talk in general terms. Instead, it is used to emphasize that the action is happening at the moment of speaking/writing.

Estoy hablando contigo. Estamos comiendo unas papas fritas.

Ellos están tomando los papeles al profesor. Él está escribiendo una carta a su abuela.
