SPECIAL TY ADDITIVES SPECIALTY High Performance Product s fo forr oducts Paints, Coatings, Cleaners and Lubricants Dover Chemical produces a complete line of non-ionic surfactants, phosphate esters, and polyol esters. These products have a very wide range of applications and are used in a variety of formulations.
Milidin GX-3 Milidin GX-3 was formulated for use in various systems as an additive for emulsions and aqueous solutions where control of pH is critical. It prolongs the useful life of aqueous solutions and emulsions by stabilizing the pH at 8 - 9. It does this by acting as a buffer during the changes in chemistry that take place in a solution or emulsion over time. These changes include the effects of oxidation and additive depletion as well as reduced pH. GX-3’s high reserve alkalinity acts to minimize these effects by ensuring the system maintains or stays close to its original pH. This ensures the system will
continue to function as it was designed, reduces degradation, and improves long-term stability. Milidin GX-3 is compatible with other additives that are stable under alkaline conditions. It does not contain any phenol or phenolic derivatives, heavy metals, nitrates, nitrites or nitroso-amines. It is a low toxicity product. Milidin GX-3 can be added to water-based solutions or emulsions so that the concentration in the finished material is 1000 2000 ppm, a level sufficient for pH control.

AL KYLPH ENOL S ALK LPHE OLS Building Blocks f or High Perfo Perforr mance Chemicals In 1996, Dover Chemical built a state-of-theart manufacturing facility to produce alkylphenol products. After several expansions and updates, today’s facility is totally automated, assuring our customers of consistent quality para- and di-nonylphenol and paraand di-cumylphenol. This plant represents a major investment in Dover’s strategy to become a global supplier to the polymer industry.
Alkylphenol Applications
RUBBER CHEMISTRY: Nonylphenol sulfide has been used as a reclaiming agent for synthetic rubber.
SURFACTANTS: The largest industrial use for alkylphenol is in the manufacture of nonionic surfactants. These ethoxylated alkylphenol surfactants have good chemical stability and excellent wetting, emulsifying and detergent properties.
PVC: A variety of alkylphenol derivatives have uses as polyvinyl chloride plasticizer intermediates. These intermediates include nonylphenol benzoate, nonylphenol alkanesulfonates and nonylcyclohexanol.
TNP P: Nonylphenol is reacted with phosphorus trichloride to produce trisnonylphenyl phosphite (TNPP), a common antioxidant for a wide range of polymer systems.
EPOXY RESINS: Nonylphenol can be used in an epoxy resin hardener.
PHENOLIC RESINS: Nonylphenol reacts with aldehydes to yield phenolic resins. When used with other phenols, even in small quantities, it makes the phenolic resins more water resistant, more soluble in oil, and improves electrical properties.
MISCELLANEOUS: Other applications for alkylphenols include pharmaceuticals, corrosion inhibitors, dyestuffs, ore flotation agents, insecticides, bactericides, chemical stabilizers, and the leather industry. The overbased calcium salt of nonylphenol can be used as a dispersant in hydraulic fluids and motor oil.

Dover offers two aqueous flame retardant systems: DOVERSPERSE A-1 is a dispersed solid and is used to flame retard coatings and textiles. DOVERSPERSE 3 is an emulsion based on a high viscosity liquid and is typically used to flame retard adhesive systems. Page 12
HORDARESI N ® and CHLORE Z® HORDARESIN CHLOREZ Hordaresin and Chlorez are the brand names for Dover Chemical’s line of resinous chlorinated paraffins. These products are tasteless and odorless chlorinated paraffin resins especially soluble in aromatic and chlorinated solvents. They have limited or no solubility in lower alcohols, glycols, glycerines, and water. They provide low-cost flame retardancy for a wide variety of applications. Hordaresin and Chlorez are compatible with most commonly used resins, rubbers, plasticizers, waxes, and drying oils. Because of their very high active halogen content and low cost, these products find wide usage as flame retardant additives in coatings, inks, plastics, foams, adhesives, paper and fabrics.
DOVERGUARD Dover Chemical Corporation has developed a group of products based on the bromination and chlorination of a variety of olefins. Each has been developed to meet specific end-use needs. These products also can be compounded into a variety of polymer systems to provide efficient use of synergists.
FLAM E RET ARDANT S FLAME RETARDANT ARDANTS DO VE RSP E RS E DOVE VER SPE Both Doversperse A-1 and Doversperse 3 typically contain 45% available chlorine for maximum flame retardant efficiency. Because of their non-ionic base they find application in both cationic and anionic emulsion systems. In addition to their flame retardant contribution they improve adhesion, impact chemical and water resistance and allow the user to formulate aqueous systems rather than solvent systems. Doversperse A-1 is recommended if increased hardness is required. Use Doversperse 3 for plasticizing and tackifying. Application areas include adhesives, rubber coatings, inks, carpet backings, paper and fabric coatings.
Lab tests with and without flame retardant additives prove their effectiveness.

Dover Chemical has expanded its already impressive presence in the polymer additive market with the addition of Doverlube® Metallic Stearates. These metal soaps are used widely in the polymer industry as internal lubricants, acid scavengers, co-stabilizers and fusion promoters. Manufacturers of styrenics, polyolefins, urethanes, polyesters and most notably PVC, use Metallic Stearates in their formulations. Other markets and applications using Metallic Stearates include paints and coatings, inks, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and petroleum products. Dover Chemical has developed and commercialized a new, proprietary line of tribasic calcium stearates called Doverlube Tri*Cal. This new family of products provides the polymer industry, PVC Compounders and fabricators in particular, with enhanced performance over commonly-used, overbased calcium stearates, including: • improved early color and early color hold • lower static charge build-up • improved weathering • lower odor during processing from tin stabilizer systems • ability to reduce tin stabilizer addition rates, thus yielding lower cost compounds
The chart above shows the relative thermal performance of Doverlube Tri *Cal versus standard over-based calcium stearate. Dover Chemical also offers Add*Packs, which are blends of metallic stearate and other polymer additives produced by Dover Chemical: Doverphos®, Dovernox® and paraffin or oxidized polyethylene waxes.
