I. DEFINITION It is a procedure wherein a patient is trained to regain normal bladder control by clamping and unclamping the indwelling Foley catheter using ovum forceps. II. PURPOSE /S  

To improve both the urge and urinary incontinence To break the cycle of frequency, urgency, hesitancy and to reestablish voluntary control over bladder function

III. EQUIPMENT / MATERIALS   

Kardex/flow sheet Ovum forceps Under pad (optional)

IV. NURSING PROCEDURE NURSING ACTION A. PREPARATORY PHASE 1. Verify physician's order for removal of indwelling Foley catheter. 2. Explain procedure to the patient and what to expect during the procedure. 3. Charge materials to be used through the computer system. 4. Assess patient condition and bladder distension. 5. Position patient comfortably. 6. Do hand hygiene. B. PERFORMANCE PHASE 1. Clamp the Foley catheter for 1 – 2 hours and unclamp for 15 minutes. 2. Repeat the cycle within 24 hours until such time that the patient verbalizes the urge to void and unclamp the indwelling Foley catheter thereafter. 3. Reassess patient's condition and bladder distension. 4. Prepare for Foley catheter removal once patient is able to void freely. C. FOLLOW – UP PHASE 1. Do hand hygiene. 2. Assess and document patient's response and refer accordingly. Reviewed by

V. NURSING CONSIDERATION 1. Repeat the cycle 2 – 3 times prior to removal of indwelling catheter for the patient to reestablish bladder control.
