20 Questions Activity Materials needed: Directions for 20 Questions Activity Handout (see next page) TEKS: Varied, dependent upon the “items” selected for the activity Approximate time: 20 to 25 minutes Directions: 1. Divide the class into pairs. Explain that one student will be the person that picks the item to be guessed, and the other student will be the guesser. 2. Give each student a copy of the “Directions for 20 Questions” handout (next page). Go over the directions with the class. 3. Have the students play “20 Questions” according to the handout. (15 to 20 minutes of game play time is recommended.) 4. Be available during game play to act as a moderator and handle “challenges” that may arise during the game.

Directions for 20 Questions - Handout Directions for the person that picks the “item”: 1. Think of an “item” that is related an occupation currently being taught. The “item” must have been presented in class in some form. It can fall into a category of person, place, thing, or action. 2. Begin the game by telling the “guesser” that the “item” you are thinking of is a _________ (person, place, thing, or action). 3. Keep track of the number of questions being asked by the “guesser” by holding up the number of fingers that represent the number of questions asked. 4. You may answer “yes,” “no,” “maybe,” “often,” “sometimes,” or “seldom” to the questions. Base your answers on generalities. If the guesser asks, “Is it bigger than a breadbox,” don’t say “sometimes.” You may be thinking it’s bigger than some breadboxes, but smaller than others. If the item is bigger than a breadbox you or most people would think of, the answer should be “yes.” 5. If the guesser has not guessed the item after 20 questions, then you win and select another item to start another game. If your partner guesses the item, he or she wins, and it becomes their turn to pick the item to guess. Directions for the guesser: 1. After the category has been communicated, you may begin your questions. It is best to begin with broad, general questions and then become more specific. As long as you are getting an answer of “yes,” you are probably on the right track. A “no” answer most likely indicates you need to choose a different path of questioning. 2. Try to build your questions on previous answers. 3. Your guess of what the item is counts as one of your questions. If you get to question 17 or 18, it’s a good idea to start guessing the item based on the information you have received so far.
