COPD: Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Instructions forAuthors Submission of Manuscripts. Manuscripts should be submitted in hardcopy to James Crapo, MD, Editor-in-Chief/COPD, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, 1400 Jackson Street, RM K701b, Denver, Colorado, 80206, USA and as an e-mail attachment to [email protected] Please combine all elements of your article – text, references, lowresolution figures, captions, and tables – into one file, but keep each figure and table on its own separate page in the file. Name the files as: COPD plus the last name of the lead author, the word “Draft,” and the date as six digits (Example: COPD_Smith_Draft_051504). Once the review process is completed successfully, you will be notified of acceptance and given further instructions for submitting final files. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. Required Content: Article Type: Select one from the following list and include as a heading above your aticle: Original Research, Review, Perpectives, Clincial Pearl, Case Report, Special Feature, Editorial, Letter to the Editor, Book Review, Notice Affiliation. Article Title: Maximum length 100 characters Author Data: Full name, affiliation, mailing address, e-mail, and fax for each contributor Corresponding Author: Identify the corresponding author and give the preferred e-mail address for receiving correspondence and proofs and preferred mailing address to receive any complimentary material Key Words: Four to six words or phrases – preferably MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) terms, the controlled vocabulary used by PubMed – that describe the main topics of your article. Abstract: One paragraph (250 words maximum) summarizing the content of your article (i.e rationale, objectives, main findings, and principle conclusions). Do not include headings, abbreviations, footnotes, or acronyms. Do not cite references, figures, or tables. Introduction: One or two paragraphs providing background material, the rationale for the study, and the hypothesis or central question. The ideal length is 500 words. Right Running Head: A shortened version of the title, no longer than 50 characters, suitable to run at the top of the right pages of the article. Required Headings and Length: Original Research or Review Articles: Required headings are: Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Reference. Grants, funding, previous publication, etc. are footnoted on the first page of the article. Other acknowledgements are grouped into one paragraph after the Discussion. Case report: These follow the same format as Original Research or Review Articles, but are limited to approximately 2,000 words. Special Features, Clinical Pearls, Perspectives, State of the Art Articles: Send a proprosal to Editor Crapo before completion or submission of the article. Include a descriptioon of scope, novel aspects, and tentative contents of the proposed article. Clinical Pearls and Perspectives must be of practical value to physicans; personal opinions, when fully supported by data, may be included. State of the Art articles are comprehensive, scholarly works of longer length (24-40 pages; 5,000-10,000 words). Manuscript Preparation. Be consistent in type and font size (12 pt Times Roman is preferred); in style of headings; and in use of italics, symbols, and special characters. Use numeral keys for 0 (zero) and 1(one). Do not use manual page breaks, automatic numbering for lists, endof-line hyphenation, or right-hand justification. Double-space the entire article including tables, references, and figure legends. Cite all figures, tables, and equations in the text (parenthetically within a sentence). Place complex mathematical equations and chemistry on sparate lines. Use generic names of drugs. Include the city, state, and country of the manufacturer, parenthetically after the first mention. Abbreviate units of measure only if preceded by a number. References, Bibliography, and Sourcelines. Provide complete information (as described below) for references and source lines. Be sure you cite all references within the text as Arabic numbers enclosed in parentheses. Do not cite using superscript numbers; do not include Ibid., op cit. ,or annotations. (Handle annotations as

footnotes to the text discussion.). Journals: List all authors (do not use et al.) in inverted style (lastname followed by first initials); full article title; journal (standard abbreviation); year of publication, volume number; issue number; inclusive pages (or “in press” if not yet published). Example: Smith AB. Crohn’s disease: transmission electron microscopic studies. Hum Pathol 1975; 6:26-29. Books: List all chapter authors (do not use et al.) in inverted style (last name followed by first initials). Then full chapter title; book title; edition number if applicable (e.g., 3rd Ed.); all book editors if applicable (inverted style) with “Ed.” or “Eds.” immediately following; city/state; publisher; 4-digit year of publication; inclusive pages. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: · 300 dpi or higher · sized to fit on journal page · EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only · submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated. Number separately with Arabic numerals in the sequence discussed in the text. Include table titles and figure legends; define all abbreviations and include a source line when applicable. Each figure and table must be on a separate page at the end of the document. Do not em bed figures and tables within the text. Create tables using Microsoft Word’s table function or via the tab key (hitting the key only once between columns). Maintain a consistent typeface, size, and double-spacing. Create separate files for each figure at (1) two resolutions: low resolution (72 dpi) and high resolution (300 dpi for photos; 900 dpi for charts and drawings); and at (2) final size. Include the low resolution version at submission of the first draft, and the high resolution version at submission of the accepted article. Use 8 pt Helvetica upper/lower case for labels within the art and for part labels (A, B, C, etc.). Lines or rules within art should be 1/2 pt. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable. Page Proofs. Proofs will be sent out to all authors via e-proofs. Therefore, each author must submit an e-mail address in order to receive e-proofs. All proofs must be corrected and returned to the publisher by the specified deadline. If proofs are not returned by the specified deadline, the manuscript may be pulled from the issue. Only correction of typographical errors is permitted. Journal Copies. Corresponding authors will each receive 1 complimentary issue per article for up to 3 authors. Offprints and extra journal copies can be ordered at the page proof stage through the publisher.
