Product note MEPS scheme for low voltage motors in Brazil

Brazil has had mandatory Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for three-phase squirrel cage induction motors since December 2009. The law [1] regulates manufacturing and importation of motors that are to be connected to the national power grid, Eletrobras. From June 2010 the law applies to sales of stocked motors and importation of motors mounted on other equipment, such as pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, gearboxes, etc. Note that the law also applies to auxiliary motors used for forced ventilation of other, larger motors. In December 2012 the coverage was extended.

The only test method allowed (“variation of method 2”, which is defined in paragraph 15.4.2 of Standard NBR 5383-1:2002) is similar (but not identical) to the indirect method in IEC 60034-2-1:2007 with PLL determined from measurement. Table 1: Minimum efficiency levels (60 Hz) Power

ABB does not have a general approval can be imported only after receiving a batch approval. This requires that a certain number of the motors in question are tested by an INMETRO accredited test facility to confirm that their efficiency meets the stipulated levels. The batch approval procedure implies increased costs, can be time consuming and carries the risk of non-approval. It is important to note that it is the importer’s responsibility to ensure that motors have the necessary approval. Ordering of NBR compliant ABB motors When dimensioning and ordering motors that are covered by the Brazilian efficiency law, it is mandatory that only motors that have general approval are selected. To get the general NBR approval ABB has declared the efficiency values to INMETRO for all NBR motors, of which several have values higher than those in table 1. Every NBR compliant motor must be stamped with its declared value. The variant code “542 NBR design” must be used when ordering. This code includes, amongst other things, a special NBR rating plate and an additional plate or label, which is shown below.

Intermediate power ratings For motors with power ratings intermediate to those shown in Table 1, use the minimum efficiency level for the table power closest to the motor’s rated power. If the motor’s rated power is exactly in the middle of two table powers, use the minimum efficiency level for the higher table power.
