BY MISHA BERSON When he sketched out the outsize stocky body of Shrek, in his book of the same title, the late William Steig never imagined his charming tale about a benign, swamp-dwelling ogre would become a phenomenon. After all, Steig only began to turn out books for children at age 60. At the time, he was already a long-celebrated (and adult-oriented) cartoonist for The New Yorker magazine. But children’s literature turned out to be a natural progression for the prolific Steig and a boon for young readers. “This was not disconnected from the rest of his career,” says Claudia Nahson, curator of “From The New Yorker to Shrek: The Art of William Steig,” a 2008 exhibit at the Jewish Museum in New York. “Steig loved children, he loved to write, he loved to draw,” Nahson notes. “He said the secret to his success was that he never really grew up.” orn in 1907, to Eastern European Jewish immigrants, the baseballloving, Bronx-bred Steig mined his talent for drawing to help support his family during the Great Depression. He made his first cartoon sale to The New Yorker in 1930, the start of his sevendecade stint at the magazine. Steig’s New Yorker output: more than 1,600 cartoons and 120 cover illustrations. He refined a witty, whimsical visual style there, and you can see its influence on such

current New Yorker cartoonists as Roz Chast. As Steig’s obituary in The New York Times put it (he died in 2003 at age 95), his “squiggly” line drawings often depicted “satyrs, damsels, dogs and drunks.” And his world-view was unsentimental but humane, playful, earthy and acerbic. ascinated by psychoanalysis, he also illustrated books by the controversial psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich, then created booklength collections of drawings as well as humorous sketches for cocktail napkins and greeting cards. During the 1960s, a colleague urged Steig to come up with a storybook for kids. “He was reluctant at first,” says Nahson, “because he didn’t like to draw the same characters multiple times. He liked to draw something, then move on.” But beginning with the 1968 tome Roland the Minstrel Pig (about a lute-playing porker), Steig found an eager young audience for his fables, many of which featured animal characters, including Doctor DeSoto (about a dentist with a fox patient), and Abel’s Island (about a mouse swept away in a storm). Out of more than two dozen titles, Steig’s most popular kids book today is surely Shrek! (The title, ironically, is a Yiddish word for fear or terror). The 1990 tome originated the story of a misanthropic, green-headed ogre befriended by a donkey and beloved by an ogre princess.

“Shrek is an anti-hero, and Steig always said the perfect hero is a flawed hero,” says Nahson. “He always identified with the underdog.” When DreamWorks wanted to make a feature film of the book, Steig agreed and, in a Boston Globe interview, said he received $500,000 for the rights, less than he expected. (The first Shrek ultimately earned hundreds of millions of dollars, and spun off three lucrative sequels.) Intrigued with the project, Steig “wrote notes to the producers, which I put in the museum show, sharing ideas he had for the script,” Nahson explains. “The first of the Shrek movies is really the closest to his work.” esser known films were made earlier of several Steig books (Abel’s Island, Doctor DeSoto, Pete’s a Pizza). But the huge critical and commercial response to Shrek (released in 2001) amazed the artist. He even became a fan himself. Recounts Nahson, “Steig was very old by then, in his 90s. But he went to see the movie and was asked his opinion. He said something like, ‘It’s vulgar, it’s disgusting — and I love it!’” n

The 2001 American animated comedy film Shrek, directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, was a sleeper hit. A big one. Produced by DreamWorks Animation, Shrek was the first film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, a new category introduced in 2001. It starred the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow. Loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 fairytale picture book Shrek!, the movie Shrek (Myers) is a big, strong, solitude-loving, intimidating ogre destined to fall in love with a down-to-earth, spunky Princess Fiona (Diaz) and befriended by a an overly loquacious donkey named Donkey (Eddie Murphy, who never shuts up). Things get ugly when this ogre—not a handsome prince—shows up to rescue the feisty Fiona from the height-challenged Lord Farquaad, King of Duloc (Lithgow), a short short-tempered villain. Add some familiar fairy-tale characters who are Duloc squatters that Farqaad dislikes, a cookie with an attitude, plot twists, songs, dances, and Fiona’s and Shrek’s discovery that they love each other… and you’ve got a musical. Part romance and part send-up, the show morphs into quirky, irreverent fun for all, young and old, tall and small. Because of its quirkiness, Shrek the film (which was followed by three sequels, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After)

also earned another singular distinction: it was proclaimed worthy of adult interest for its adult-oriented jokes and themes (well over the heads of the youngsters, rest assured), yet with a plot and humor simple enough to appeal to the kids. Shrek The Musical (the ultimate sequel?) has music by Jeanine Tesori (Caroline or Change) and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) and is based on the Steig book, but chiefly on the 2001 film. After its tryout in Seattle in 2008, the Broadway production opened in December of that year, playing through January 3, 2010. A West End production is set to open in May 2011 at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

DIFFERENCES AND REFERENCES The Shrek the Musical tour that launched in Chicago on July 13 of this year, co-directed by Rob Ashford and Jason Moore, features some changes: a new opening, 19 new songs, improved illusions. The items listed below denote some little known facts about the musical and a few of the differences from the Broadway edition. u Most of the spoken lines are taken right from the first movie. u “Welcome to Duloc” is the only original song from the movie left in the musical.

That voice you’ll hear shortly reminding you to turn off your cell phone and warning you that the use of recording devices is strictly forbidden, and that “if you refuse, a terrifying ogre will leap from the stage, lift you from your seat, and drag you far, far away,” yes, that voice is the voice of… Julie Andrews. (She had connections. She voiced Queen Lillian in Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After.) Enjoy the show. n

JEANINE TESORI (Music) has written four Tony-nominated scores for Broadway: Twelfth Night (Lincoln Center); Thoroughly Modern Millie (lyrics, Dick Scanlan); Caroline, or Change (lyrics, Tony Kushner); and Shrek The Musical (lyrics, David Lindsay-Abaire). The production of Caroline, or Change at the National Theater in London received the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Her first musical, Violet, written with Brian Crawley, received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1997. She has been the recipient of many other honors including Drama Desk and Obie Awards, and was cited by ASCAP as the first woman composer to have “two new musicals running concurrently on Broadway.” She composed the music for the New York Shakespeare Festival’s Mother Courage, directed by George C. Wolfe, starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. She has written songs for the movie Shrek The Third. Her film scores include Nights in Rodanthe, Winds of Change, Show Business and Wrestling With Angels. She composed songs for the Disney DVD releases Mulan II, Lilo and Stitch II and The Little Mermaid III. WILLIAM STEIG (Author of the Book Shrek!). Named the “King of Cartoons” by Newsweek, William Steig remains The New Yorker’s longest-running contributor, with more than 1,600 drawings and 117 covers to his name. He began writing and illustrating books for children at the age of 60. His work Sylvester and the Magic Pebble earned him the Caldecott Medal, the highest honor bestowed on children’s picture books, but it was the 1990 fairy tale Shrek! that ultimately brought him his largest audience by inspiring one of the most successful film franchises in motion picture history. William Steig wrote and illustrated children’s books up until the last year of his life and died in 2003 at the age of 95.
