ABSTRACT This paper/study is entitled “The Translation of Implicit meaning in English-Indonesian subtitle of the Movie Sherlock Holmes”. The definition of implicit meaning is part of meaning intended to be understood by the writer, about something to which a word or sentence refers. This study is focused on classifying the kinds of implicit meanings and their type of translation in the movie Sherlock Holmes. In fact, implicit meanings rise between different culture and language also in the plot of the story of the movie which the viewer may be confused because of those aspects The data of this study was taken from a movie entitled Sherlock Holmes. The data was collected through observation method. It was followed by filling the data through note-taking technique, and then the data was categorized based on the theories. The descriptive analysis is presented below each kinds of implicit meaning, which had been categorized. The analysis of the translation of implicit meaning of English Indonesian subtitle is primarily based on the theory of implicit meaning by Larson (1984) and the theory of the method or procedure of translation according to Vinay and Darbelnet (in Venuti (ed.) 2000). The discussions are about the kinds of implicit meaning occurred in the movie, and their translation in Indonesian. The result of the analysis explicates there are 18 implicit meanings were found in the movie and divided into three kinds according to the theory used. There are found the method of translation that mostly occurred in the analysis are: literal translation, adaptation, equivalence, and modulation method. There are also found the adjustments that are applied in order to avoid misunderstanding in comprehending the story of the movie and to produce as nearly as possible the same effect on Indonesian viewer such as the effect produced on the viewer of the original movie.
