French Conversation Five ladies are looking for a French conversation teacher to take over the group. Our previous teacher retired and we would all like to continue with lessons. The previous class was on a Monday morning from 10h00–11h30. 1
We write a short essay, discuss current events, books, films, something we might have done during the week and then we read and discuss an article from a French magazine. We need some additional grammar lessons. Our group is based mainly in Parktown North. Please contact me on 082 456 4210 or

Social Lunches The first social lunch took place at Nice in Parkhurst in November. Twenty-two people enjoyed good food, convivial company and even some reunions! The plan is to try out different restaurants. We are looking for restaurants in pleasant settings with reasonable priced items on the menu. Legal Issues If you interested in discussing and reviewing legal concerns, join Stanley Sapire (tel: 011 483 1150) on the third Wednesday of the month in the morning. This course offers a monthly review of legal matters. Constitutional issues arise which are fruitful material for clarification and discussion. Civil and criminal cases arise from time to time which are of public interest on which there are different views giving rise to lively but informed debate. Topics may be suggested by participants on the course.
Tuesday Hike – End of Year Lunch It’s not only walking and hiking that give Pim, Roger and Bill the zeal of ‘leading’ the Tuesday group. They seem to be entertainers as well! This time, with Bill directing, an emailed invitation resulted in an end-ofyear function. Sixty members (some with spouses) ‘hiked in’ as guests to a lunch at the beautiful Glenburn resort. Glenburn management had allocated a special room, known as The Palms, with verandah and swimming pool. It was a perfect day and there were six tables, each one seating 10. The table decorations were rather cute – tall, circular glass vases, with water, held 2
lemons and apples bobbling around; then a circle of pine cones with chocolates shelved in the slots, and finally ivy leaves girdling the whole structure. Mauve menu cards, white tablecloths and black serviettes created a charming picture. The ambience and cheerfulness of the gathering more than made up for the fact that the food and service was somewhat disappointing. Awards of thanks were handed to a number of the group members - those who give of their time, organise, plan and ensure that everything runs smoothly on Tuesdays. It was a great success. OUT AND ABOUT On Thursday 22nd February an outing is planned to the World of Beer. An outing is also planned to Gandhi House and the arrangements will be confirmed later.

Russian Orthodox Church
Our U3A outing for October was to the Russian Orthodox Church in Midrand attended by 27 people. The church with its spectacular 5 golden domes is very beautiful and is set in a lovely garden (with some birch trees) and you feel as if you are in Moscow. The priest Rev. Danil Lugavoy was most hospitable and we had an extended very informative question and answer session with him. Ken Norman

Transvaal Scottish Our outing in November was to The View in Parktown. This beautiful house was designed in 1896 by Charles Aburrow and built the following year for Thomas Cullinan. Originally named for its superb view across to the Magaliesberg, the house is now home of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment. James Mitchell gave us a most interesting and informative talk. He pointed out the superb hand-painted detailing along the walls in the entrance hall which has been lovingly restored in recent years – and told us many amusing anecdotes about the various portraits of officers displayed in the lounge.

There is a regimental museum housing memorabilia from the first and second world wars including medals, inscribed pocket watches, uniforms and letters. An original Delville Wood Cross hangs above the main stairs and shows damage sustained from shell and rifle fire during the retreat. We had a very pleasant visit to this lovely house and enjoyed drinks and snacks after our tour. Several members of the group said they would like to return with their spouses. Beryl Howard

Membership The membership fees for 2018 have been retained at R50 per annum. All people attending courses or outings should also be a member of a U3A branch. It is expected that those people benefitting from the activities should support U3A by becoming a member. The costs are kept to a minimum but there are expenses that need to be covered.
