Message from the Director
Tasty Thanksgiving Recipe Books
There has been one topic that has dominated my time and energy more than any other responsibility the past few months: THE NEW HILDALE LIBRARY!
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many are planning on visits from friends and relatives to share the holiday. Finding recipes to accommodate guests with special dietary needs can be a challenge, but there are many great cookbooks available @ your library! Here are a few selections that you can check out for your holiday planning:
I wish to express my gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who have donated time, materials, and money that have allowed the Hildale branch to become a reality. It has been incredible to see the efforts of so many work together toward this goal. I would like to invite the community to attend the ribbon cutting and dedication of the Hildale branch and celebrate this momentous occasion with us!

Library Employee of the Month
I would like to announce the Library Employee of the Month for September - Cheri Wilcox! As the volunteer coordinator for the Washington Branch, Cheri used the volunteers to organize the donation pile that had grown into a small mountain.
She has developed a system to organize donations, and these databases will be shared with other branches to request replacements or additions to their collection. Her energetic, positive attitude has helped to motivate our volunteers in a productive manner. Cheri’s ability to train volunteers on shelving, coordinate projects simultaneously, and overseeing the volunteer activities has been instrumental in accomplishing some large projects and maintaining a smooth workflow within the branch. Cheri has also created a new audiobook pullout section. Similar to our new books section, the patrons are now able to browse for new arrivals in the audiobook collection. With an increasing popularity in graphic novels, she created a more user friendly browsing and searching layout for both our YA and adult graphic novels. Cheri is a take-charge, pro-active team player. When she recognizes an issue or area for improvement, you can be sure Cheri will step up to help solve the problem. The moustache: is there any accessory that better bespeaks times past? Picture a swath of swarthy whiskers ‘neath a bowler hat, a ginger handlebar above a cowboy’s kerchief, a pencil-thin line lending gentlemanly demeanor to a man turned out in the finest tux society has ever seen. And moustaches aren’t just for helping men to become exceedingly dashing; during the month of November, or “Movember” as it is known in some circles, gents can grow whiskers to raise awareness of men’s health issues. Because growing facial hair can take great concentration (particularly for the under-16 set), we recommend focusing on your hair growth while you sit back and watch a DVD from the library. National Picture Book Month November is National Picture Book Month! The picture book is often a child’s first experience of looking at art and reading. Children learn to read pictures before they learn to sound out words or read full sentences, and for the very young, the partnership between pictures and text helps them take in and find pleasure in a narrative. Pictures enable children to explore the world within their own imagination and make connections to characters and events they see depicted in books. When you help children connect with characters and events, you make the book more real to them. Picture books help young children understand that words convey meaning, well before they are aware of the text. Pictures can help increase vocabulary, an important building block for reading. Books can help young children identify colors, shapes, numbers, and letters, as well as names of people, places, animals, and everyday objects. Studies have shown that reading to young children helps them with reading readiness when they begin school. Join the celebration and check out some picture books @ Your Library!
The Foreign Film Club pick for December is “Embrace of the Serpent”. This film is a 2015 internationally co-produced adventure drama film directed by Ciro Guerra, shot in black-and-white. The film won the Art Cinema Award in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It also won the Best Ibero-American Film at the 3rd Platino Awards and it was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. It is the story of the relationship between Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, and two scientists who work together over the course of 40 years to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant. The Foreign Language Film Club meets the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 in the community room of the Santa Clara Library. All are welcome!
