Recognition Report 2016

Our mission is to enrich the lives of individuals with disabilities…

Enriching the Quality of Life

Rhonda Mart Executive Director

Tony Badding Board President

Tony and I would like to invite you to review our Recognition Report and celebrate with us New Hope’s accomplishments and successes for 2016. It is with pride and appreciation that we look back and remember all of you who have played a part in these achievements. 2016 brought a year of unprecedented change for Iowa’s disability service providers. A significant modification occurred when the administration of Iowa’s Medicaid dollars shifted from the state of Iowa to large Medicaid Managed Care companies headquartered outside of the state of Iowa. Contracting with 3 new payer sources with new payment methodologies required a new way of thinking and planning. This first eight months of Managed Care has been less bumpy for New Hope than reported by many Medicaid providers, but it is certain that New Hope’s future services will be shaped by the direction set by these managed price-setters. Inevitable transformation requires a new strategic direction. Strategic planning for our new future will begin in early 2017. Another change for disability service providers is the new ruling issued by the Center of Medicaid and Medicare Services in early 2014 which mandates all community-based funding for disability services to be delivered in fully integrated settings. New Hope’s center-based work training services and center-based Day Habilitation services are actively being transitioned to opportunities that include community employment, community volunteerism, or activities that build community connections or independent living skills for individuals. In 2017, the work center at Plaza Drive will be repurposed for the expansion of the New Hope Bargain Shoppe. Processing and receiving floor space will be expanded to enable more jobs that will be completed by clients. Unsold textile goods will be baled – creating client jobs, increased revenues, and reducing waste sent to the landfill. In 2018, further expansion of the store will include the addition of a coffee shop which will provide additional employment opportunities for clients served. New Hope’s dependence on compassionate, caring employees to deliver the support and services that vulnerable individuals need creates a considerable challenge for day-to-day operations. While dedicated support professionals and their supervisor work many additional hours to ensure this – it is not a sustainable solution.

Creative recruitment and retention strategies – including referral

incentives, sign-on bonuses, and retention incentives are at the heart of our solutions as well as implementing new models of support services and expanding scheduling options. Though challenges abound, we are confident of our strengths in innovation and creative uses of our resources. Unsteady times require steady leaders and we are very grateful for the leadership and commitment of New Hope’s Governing Board, Foundation Board, and Executive Team.

fam•i•ly - a group of people, each a unique masterpiece, sharing unconditional love, hugs and support... one of life’s greatest blessings. What do you think of when you hear the word ‘family’? Chuck and I immediately relate the word family to New Hope. As you begin to read through New Hope’s recognition book you will notice the many businesses, organizations, volunteers, employees, board members, clients, and family members who have become a part of the New Hope ‘family’. This fiscal year, New Hope has been fortunate enough to receive eight bequests! Each one was part of the New Hope family; a past board member, five client families, and two former employees. We are grateful beyond words for these bequests and many memorials designated to grow New Hope’s endowment fund. The fall kicked off with another successful Volunteer Soup Day which helped purchase a paging system for a campus home, numerous sensory items, and an iPad register for a Bargain Shoppe. New Hope’s Volunteer Advisory Board ensures the funds raised be directed towards client wants/ needs – and that is something Chuck and I take pride in. Volunteers continue to be the backbone of success to all of our Bargain Shoppes, without them the stores would not be possible! I would like to give a special ‘Thank you’ to the volunteers from American Home Shield who provided support to New Hope clients at Challenge Day, BINGO Night and the Valentine and Halloween dances – the clients truly enjoy the extra time volunteers spend with them! The 24th Annual Golf Classic, sponsored by Farner Bocken, once again was a record-breaking year. We are grateful for the 175 sponsors that assisted us in purchasing two wheelchair accessible vans for clients’ safety and comfort. The Frank H. Hermsen Fund helped support New Hope job coaches attain the newly required certification training for the state of Iowa. Also due to the Frank H. Hermsen Fund, employees attended a technology summit, a conference on wage and hour requirements, and a supervisory and leadership training. Three employees were also awarded scholarships to further their education which will enhance their job skills. Thank you to the Carroll Rotary and the Warren H. Timmerman Charitable Trust for funding the Textile Remodel/Expansion that will take place in early 2017 at Plaza Drive by financing the cost of construction and a baler. This project is estimated to be a new income stream and provide additional jobs for our clients – which will be key in years to come. Once again the matching grant from Connie and Jan Hook to support the staff support fund goal was reached. Because of the numerous donors’ generosity, New Hope was able to thank all of the dedicated staff with a one-time retention payment. As fiscal year 2016 closes, Chuck and I would like to thank all of you for being a part of New Hope’s Family. You truly are one of life’s greatest blessings!

This year I have had the good fortune to celebrate the 35th year of my service career at New Hope. I recognize that I have gained much more than I have given. New Hope Milestones In 1981, Albert & Dora Baumhover set up a Trust for the benefit of their daughter—Mary Ellen Baumhover, who was one of New Hope’s first clients. The Trust was funded by life insurance proceeds which were invested and grew over Mary’s many years of life. Unfortunately, Mary passed away in March of 2016. Mary’s family has always been grateful for the care Mary received while living at New Hope and are thankful to be able to gift $158,700 to New Hope from the Mary Ellen Baumhover Trust. The Baumhover Family New Hope is honored by this kind gift and would like to thank the entire Baumhover family for their dedication in memory of Mary!

New Hope is very excited and proud to announce the beginning stages of a business plan are underway for the opening of a fifth Bargain Shoppe located in the former ‘Ben Franklin’ building in Jefferson, Iowa. “We as an organization look forward to the potential opportunity to

grow

our

future

relationships

in

Jefferson and the Greene County area” Rhonda Mart says. Funds raised from the Bargain Shoppe will continue to assist the clients served by New Hope.

The Carroll Rotary Club recently donated $2,500 to New Hope which will be used to expand New Hope’s Carroll Bargain Shoppe and for the purchase of a baler to

recycle

unsellable

material.

The

Rotary Club continues to be an active supporter in the fundraising efforts of New Hope. Over the past 36 years, the Rotarians

40 Years Dedicated to New Hope For the past forty years, Chuck Clark, former New Hope chief financial officer, had gone quietly about the business of overseeing New Hope’s complex budget. “It is mind boggling to think how Chuck’s position has changed since he first began in April of 1976 when he was hired as New Hope’s Business Manager by the very first executive director, Lamar Esbeck,” says current executive director Rhonda Mart. Chuck officially retired May 5, 2016 leaving Nicole McCarville to his duties and responsibilities as CFO. Chuck’s Business Department had grown to a six-person department, handling what started as a shoe string budget to a current multi-milliondollar operating budget. In addition, Chuck managed New Hope’s Information Technology department. Throughout the last four decades, leadership has turned to Chuck to provide the financial forecasting of decisions and

personally, never losing sight of the significance financial decisions have on human lives,” Rhonda Mart says. In addition to his dedicated service to New Hope, Clark has served on the Lions Club for 35 plus years; he has managed Habitat for Humanity’s bookkeeping system for 10 plus years, as well as for the Food Pantry. Clark is also an avid runner – having completed three full marathons and numerous half marathons. Ten years ago, Clark was asked why he’s chosen to work at New Hope for 30 years. Here was his answer: “Yesterday, I attended the funeral of a person who had received services from New Hope for the last 27 years. That person had no immediate family, his parents and siblings were deceased. His ‘family’ consisted of the people who he lived with and the staff who had taken care of him and befriended him. My thought was ‘that’s what New Hope is’. This is one of the reasons I love my job. I get to be around amazing people doing amazing things.” “New Hope is very fortunate to have had the privilege of calling Chuck an employee and friend,” CEO Rhonda Mart says. “His knowledge, experience, perspective and dedication will be greatly missed. His character, work ethic and commitment will leave an enduring legacy to New Hope, one that will not soon be forgot.”

2015 New Hope Community Appreciation Awards The New Hope Community Appreciation Awards were presented at the appreciation banquet held in November of 2015, to individuals that have made positive influences on the lives of individuals with disabilities served by New Hope.

Mark Maas of New Hope presented Vicki and Ed Smith with an appreciation award for their continued involvement in creating a soccer team for New Hope clients. Rhonda Mart, Executive Director read, “Ed has coached the New Hope soccer team for the past two summers. He brings the soccer balls, the cones and coaches the participants on the basic skills of soccer. Ed not only spends time practicing with the team, but he also spends quality time with Mark Maas by taking him to some of the Carroll High basketball games. Ed’s consideration and thought for others has made a huge difference in the lives of individuals served by New Hope.”

Jodie Jansen and David Duncan of New Hope presented an appreciation award to Susie Duncan. Jodie, New Hope Director of

Development

read,

“Susie

works

fulltime at Carroll County State Bank where she daily interacts with the New Hope clients who are employed there. Susie has been a New Hope volunteer since 1990 when she began driving and accompanying clients to church. Susie has served on the New Hope Volunteer Advisory

Board

since

2004

and

has

served as President the last three years. Because Susie believes in the mission of New Hope she has graciously volunteered at just about every major fundraising event for New Hope.”

2015 New Hope Community Appreciation Awards Kim

Platt

of

New

Hope

presented

an

appreciation award to Pat and Steve Hanna who have been supporting New Hope for over ten years. Kim, Director of Residential Services read, “The Hannas have supported New Hope financially in about every project we have done since they became a part of our family. They approached New Hope in 2012 with the intent to purchase a home and provide a living space for

individuals

in

our

Community

Living

Program. The greatest things about these two is they understand the needs of our individuals and are always looking for ways to improve Jen Daniel and Kristine Cowlham of New Hope

their living environment.”

presented the award to Hy-Vee for providing many opportunities that allow New Hope clients to be a part of the community and build their careers. Jen Daniel, Director of Vocational Services read, “For over ten years, Hy-Vee has worked with New Hope by hiring clients. Their employees have welcomed individuals we serve and have become a tremendous support system. This year a Hy-Vee employee approached an individual we provide services to and asked him if he was looking for a job. This led the individual to gain a job and is currently on Hy-Vee’s payroll! The New Hope individuals mentioned working for Hy-Vee makes him feel like he is more than a number. He stated, “You can tell they care about me as a person.”

Charitable Giving Opportunities The New Hope Village Foundation was established in 1987 as the fund-raising arm of New Hope. The Board of Trustees provides governance to the New Hope Foundation. Donations play a very important part in providing high quality services to persons with disabilities. While basic levels of operational needs and services at New Hope are covered by government funding programs, there is often not enough to cover equipment, furnishings and other capital improvements that meet New Hope’s standards for high quality service.

Several special funds are available through the Foundation to help donors give more effectively and provide a better choice for contributions. Your gifts can be designated to any of the following funds: •

Annual

Fund:

The Annual Support Program pays for recurring needs, such as

adaptive equipment, vocational supplies and programming, and capital expenditures at New Hope and its off-campus sites. •

Building and Equipment Fund: The fund pays for new buildings, renovations, repair and replacement of equipment, grounds improvement, and other major expenditures at New Hope and its off-campus sites.

Endowment Fund: The fund was established to provide a supplemental source of income to support the strategic plan. It provides the donor the opportunity to make a gift that will keep on giving and will help New Hope save for the future. Funds received from planned gifts such as bequests, life insurance, retirement funds and memorial gifts go 100% to the Endowment Fund unless otherwise designated.

Staff Support Fund: This fund was developed to assist in rewarding our current experienced and compassionate workforce, in addition to recruiting new talent to provide services for our clients so they may experience an enriched quality of life, meaningful work, expanded social opportunities, support and safety.

Client Special Needs Fund: This fund was established to provide for personal needs of our clients when there are no other funds available.

Staff Development Fund: This fund provides our staff members with opportunities for expanded training and development. The development of this fund allows a greater number of New Hope’s current and future leaders the

opportunity to advance their

knowledge, skills, and abilities. Gifts of cash and materials are always needed and welcome to assist New Hope in continuing the excellence in services due to the people we serve.

24th Annual Golf Classic The 24th Annual New Hope Golf Classic, sponsored by Farner-Bocken Company was held at the Carroll Country Club in Carroll, Iowa on Friday, July 15, 2016. The event consisted of two 18-hole tournaments, pin prizes, flight prizes, holepromotions and a golf ball ‘drop’. The event brought in 260 golfers from all over the country including states of: Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wisconsin. This year’s Golf Classic netted over $86,518 in sponsorships and donations, making it yet another record breaking year for New Hope. Proceeds from the event will be used towards the purchase of two new Ram ProMaster Vans. The ProMaster has the flexibility to handle both wheelchair and ambulatory passengers with ease. The ProMaster also gives numerous seating configurations, allowing New Hope to accommodate 8-9 passengers safely. The full-sized vehicle also offers a low maintenance alternative to power lifts for transporting individuals with wheelchairs. This feature will allow staff to easily lower the rear end of the vehicle and use the 35.8” wide ramp to easily and safely transfer clients. The ProMaster will be used for transporting clients to appointments, outings and other various community integration activities. Over the last 24 years, this event has raised roughly $891,200 for the New Hope Foundation. New Hope would like to thank Farner-Bocken Company for their on-going support and commitment to this annual fundraising event. New Hope would also like to thank our generous sponsors, golfers, over 30 volunteers and countless, hard working staff and clients for another record breaking year!

Golf Ball Drop Winner! At the beginning of the tournament, all of the purchased, pre-numbered, and assigned balls were dropped from the height of a construction lifts onto the putting green. The person whose ball rolled in the cup first would win $250 and if no ball rolled in, the closest to the cup won $100. The winner of the 2016 Golf Ball Drop was Chris Caudle. Chris works for Mel-O-Cream and traveled all the way from Springfield, Illinois to support New Hope’s Golf Classic. Chris’ golf ball did not drop in the hole—but was the closest to the cup! Chris generously donated his $100 winnings back to New Hope. Thank you Chris Caudle!

As a New Hope Foundation contributor, please accept our heartfelt thank-you for all you have done for so many people served by New Hope. Be assured that your consistent support has enriched the lives of individuals with disabilities.

New Hope Volunteer Program

The volunteer program at New Hope assists in providing a higher quality of life to New Hope clients who live both on and off campus. Volunteers give many extras that would not otherwise be available to clients. Volunteers assist at the various work sites, in the community and campus homes and at the New Hope Bargain Shoppes. They are church drivers and companions. They also open their own homes to share holidays, family outings, and friendship.

Volunteer Advisory Board The Volunteer Advisory Board meets quarterly to work with and assist the New Hope Volunteer Coordinator, Emily Fink. They offer advice, help to plan the Annual Volunteer Soup Day in November and the Volunteer Appreciation event in April. They help to recruit new volunteers and assist the agency whenever and wherever needed.

Volunteer Appreciation

Employees of American Home Shield regularly donate dozens of hours of volunteer service at our annual Halloween Dances, Valentine’s Dances, Bingo nights, Challenge Day events, Mitten Tree donations and various other events. We sincerely appreciate their efforts!

HyVee of Carroll has been a supporter of New Hope and of the Volunteer Soup Day for many years. Annually, HyVee donates all of the groceries that makes this event possible. We thank them for their continued generosity and helpful smiles!
