The ratio of the 2 enantiomers in each diastereo - isomer is 1 : 1 (50% Cis, 50% trans).
Technical Data Sheet USES Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide used to control many pests, including moth pests of cotton, fruit and vegetable crops. It is also used for crack, crevice and spot treatment for control of insect pests in stores, warehouses, industrial buildings, houses, apartment buildings, greenhouses, laboratories and on ships, railcars, buses, trucks and aircraft. It may also be used in non-food areas in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, and in food processing plants and as a barrier treatment insect repellent for horses.
APPLICATIONS In addition to its agricultural use in major crops like cotton, fruit, vegetables, Cypermethrin is also used in public health programmes and for control of flies, cockroaches, etc. Cypermethrin may be formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate, ULV, and wettable powder formulations. Technical cypermethrin is a mixture of eight different isomers, each of which may have its own chemical and biological properties. The recommended pre-harvest interval for Cypermethrin varies according to the country in which it is used.
COMPATIBILITY AND STABILITY Incompatible with HDPE & plastic containers Storage Stability: Thermal Stability: Photo Stability: Hydrolytic stability:
Stable at 50ºC for a least two years. Fulfils WHO norms for storage stability. Maintains its stability up to 200ºC Field data indicate that it is stable to sunlight More stable in acidic than in alkaline media. Optimum stability is at pH4.
MODE OF ACTION The results of mechanism of Cypermethrin toxicity strongly suggest that the primary target site of Cypermethrin (and of pyrethroid insecticides in general) in the vertebrate nervous system is sodium channel in the nerve membrane. The alpha-cyano pyrethroids, such as Cypermethrin cause a long lasting prolongation of normal transient increase in sodium permeability of nerve membrane during excitation, resulting in long lasting trains of respective impulses in sense organs and a frequencydependent depression of the nerve impulse in nerve fibres. Since, the mechanisms responsible for nerve impulse generation and conduction are basically the same throughout the entire nervous system, Cypermethrin may well act in a similar way in various parts of the various central nervous system.
TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION A number of toxicological studies carried out by manufacturers and researchers in support of registration applications in many countries, shows Cypermethrin to be one of the safest synthetic pyrethroids. The main toxicity values of Cypermethrin are: Acute toxicity LD50 oral (rat) >4150 mg/kg LD50 oral (mice) >138 mg/kg LD50 dermal (rat) >4920 mg/kg LD50 dermal (rabbit) >2460 mg/kg LC50 Inhalation (rat) >2.5 mg/l (4h)
Technical Data Sheet Irritancy Eye irritancy: Skin irritancy:
Mild irritant Mild irritant
Sensitization Skin Sensitization:
Moderate sensitizer in guinea pigs
ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION Under laboratory conditions, Cypermethrin degrades more rapidly on sandy clay and sandy loam soils than on clay soils and more rapidly in soils low in organic material. In aerobic conditions, its soil halflife is 2 to 8 weeks. Cypermethrin is more persistent under anaerobic conditions. Toxicity towards avian organisms: LD50 Chicken:
2000 mg/kg
Toxicity towards aquatic organisms: LC50 fish: LC50 Daphnia Magna :
2-28 mg/l (Brown Trout) 0.15 mg/litre (48 h)
Toxicity towards beneficial insects: LD50 honey bee:
0.035 (g a.i./bee
Cypermethrin has been reported that toxic to honey bees at laboratory tests. But in practical usage no serious adverse effects have been noticed.
