ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY We believe that the principles and lessons learned in the classroom, at home, and through the local church, can be put into practice through athletics. As a microcosm of society, athletics allow the student to develop and use his or her God given ability to glorify God. Because the arena of competition is usually surrounded with pressure, the athlete is tested and the true character revealed. Consequently, the opportunity for character growth readily presents itself through athletic competition. Therefore, athletics at Christian Heritage Academy is considered an integral part of a student athlete's high school curriculum. Our philosophy can best be summed up by the phrase "doing our best as we strive to be the best.” We believe as Christians that we are commanded by Scripture always to do our best. As believers we are not to waste the talent God has given us by giving anything less than total commitment, thorough participation, and maximum effort. We also believe we should strive to be the best at what we do. Being the best at anything, whether it be as a National Merit Scholar or winning a state championship, is a worthy and admirable goal of any Christian. Becoming the best may not always be the result of our athletic program, however doing our best must be! Because of our commitment to excellence, coaches at CHA become one of the most significant components of our athletic program. They have the responsibility to model Christ-like attitudes, behaviors, and desires for our student athletes while under pressure themselves. They are participants and teachers at the same time. One of the coach's most pivotal roles is to work with athletes whose character, revealed under pressure, needs to become more Christ-like. In order to be considered an effective coach and role model, our coaches must also be thoroughly knowledgeable in their sport, capable of detailed preparation, able to motivate athletes, able to make adjustments during competition, and actively give meaning to each situation a team or individual athlete may face. Coaches have great responsibilities, to mold young lives for Christ. We believe each sport at CHA should be developed into "a program." The head varsity coach shall be responsible to provide a consistent structure and ensure that similar philosophies are implemented at all levels of the program. The program should build pride among the participants and support among the student body. Parents should be valued as partners in this process of athletic education. Off-season conditioning, camps, and club teams should be promoted for serious athletes. College bound athletes and their parents should receive sound counsel on their potential. All activities within an individual sports program should exemplify the school's commitment to a Christ-like witness, and reflect the school's athletic department's policies, procedures and philosophy. We believe all CHA athletes should be diligent in preparation, relentless in effort, disciplined by nature, respectful in actions, self-controlled with words, humble in spirit, and aggressive in pursuit of excellence, without regard to the score, opponent, time, or referee. As Christian athletes display these characteristics, good things usually happen: teams are successful; players are motivated; fans are supportive and enthusiastic; parents are proud; prospective athletes want to participate, and very often nonbelievers are drawn to Christ. Because a high school student's participation in athletics often helps foster a pattern of how to approach difficult tasks, major challenges, and intense pressure, athletics should be viewed as a crucible for developing Christian character. In order for the CHA athletic program to be successful, we equip our student athletes for their real test: life as a follower of Christ.
OBJECTIVES OF PARTICIPATION To be considered an educational experience, athletics must have specific and worthwhile objectives. These objectives include: 1. Physical fitness and skills 2. Spiritual growth 3. Mental alertness 4. Positive moral qualities 5. Constructive social abilities 6. Emotional maturity All objectives and principles in athletics must be primarily concerned with the welfare and educational development of the student-athlete. The principles which are to be achieved from the interscholastic athletic program are to provide students the opportunity to: 1. Develop their physical talents to their maximum potential 2. Engage in competitive activities 3. Learn new skills beyond those acquired in physical education classes and to improve upon those already acquired 4. Exemplify good sportsmanship as a means for learning good citizenship 5. Experience both winning and losing 6. Learn from experience that consequences follow the violation of a rule 7. Experience working as a member of a team in order to achieve a goal 8. Experience self-discipline and sacrifice as a means for achieving a goal 9. Experience a feeling of self-worth and to develop self-confidence 10. Dedicate themselves to the task of achieving a given goal 11. Experience in problem-solving and decision-making 12. Engage in organized activities with other students whose backgrounds may be dissimilar from their own 13. Understand and practice the principles of sound health, safety, and physical fitness 14. Develop the ability and desire to use their time effectively 15. Engage in competitive experiences in an acceptable manner 16. Have a positive rallying point for the school in order to help them develop school loyalty
SPORTSMANSHIP MISSION STATEMENT Good sportsmanship is the attitude and behavior that exemplifies positive support for the interscholastic programs of IHSA member schools, as well as for the individuals who participate in these programs. People involved in any facet of CHA UPPER SCHOOL interscholastic programs are expected to demonstrate respect for others and display good sportsmanship. Emphasizing and improving the sportsmanship of our students, athletes, parents and staff is one of our highest priorities. Each coach, student and parent has a role and responsibility to model and teach good sportsmanship. The IHSA has specific guidelines and by-laws for improving sportsmanship and dealing with violations. Please review carefully the following information. Illinois High School Association Sportsmanship By-law 6.011 Any player ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct shall be ineligible for the next interscholastic contest at that level of competition, and all other interscholastic contests at any level in the interim, in addition to other penalties the IHSA or the school may assess. Illinois High School Association Sportsmanship By-law 6.012 Any coach ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct shall be ineligible for the next interscholastic contest at that level of competition, and all other interscholastic contests at any level in the interim, in addition to other penalties the IHSA or the school may assess. Illinois High School Association Sportsmanship By-law 2.042 IHSA member schools have the responsibility to maintain proper crowd control and enforce principles of good sportsmanship and ethics. Spectators may be asked to leave the premises for failure to comply with these stated guidelines. The IHSA Executive Director shall have the authority to investigate reported incidents of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Behavior Expectations of the Participant • • •
Accept and understand the seriousness of your responsibility, and the privilege of representing the school and the community. Treat opponents the way you would like to be treated, as a guest or friend. Never direct remarks at opponents in a taunting manner. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Respect the job and position of the officials and respect them as people. Treating them with dignity and respect, even if you disagree with their judgment, is a fundamental behavioral expectation.
Behavior Expectations of the Spectators • • •
Remember that school athletics are learning experiences for students and the programs are part of the educational process. A ticket is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to verbally abuse others. Positive fan support is an asset. Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, other spectators and officials. Respect their roles even if you disagree with their judgment. Negative comments or the berating of players, coaches and officials are not in keeping with our philosophy or good forms of modeling.
Expectations of Parents •
• •
Be positive with your son/daughter. Do not offer excuses to them if they are not playing. Encourage them to work hard and do their best. If they have questions about issues related to their experience as a member of an interscholastic team, encourage them to ask the coach for a meeting between the two of them. Encourage your son/daughter to follow all school, athletic code and team rules. Student athletes should be role models. Parents have the opportunity to demonstrate appropriate behaviors when they show respect for the opposing players, coaches, other spectators and officials. Respect their roles even if you disagree with their judgment. Negative comments or the berating of players, coaches and officials are not in keeping with our philosophy or good forms of role modeling and will not be tolerated.
ATHLETE CODE OF CONDUCT Any member of an athletic team found in violation of the following rules will face either disciplinary action, suspension from competition and/or removal from the team. 1. Student-athletes are expected to demonstrate good citizenship. This includes the following of all school rules, state and federal laws and compliance with all Illinois High School Association by-laws and eligibility requirements. 2. Student-athletes are expected to display good sportsmanship. 3. Falsification of any required documents for athletic participation. If falsification is done by a parent or another student, the student-athlete will be held responsible. 4. If a student is too ill to come to school, then it is not appropriate for him/her to be here for practice or competition. Athletes must be in school for three classes on the day of a contest to be eligible to participate or have an excused absence. Students absent the entire school day, due to illness, may not participate in athletic contests that day or night. Athletes who are ill on Friday will not be able to participate in weekend activities, unless covered by a doctor’s note. We strongly disapprove of student-athletes staying home on school days to rest for contests that day or night. 5. Students suspended from school will not be allowed to participate in practice or contests while on suspension. Additional consequences from the athletic department may also follow. Hazing When any student, on or off campus, is subjected to verbal or physical harassment, mental or physical discomfort, intimidation, embarrassment, ridicule, bullying, or demeaning activity by an individual student or group of students, it will be deemed hazing. Any violation is subject to suspension or recommendation for expulsion. Curfew As responsible community members, all student-athletes should not only obey school policies but community policies as well. Philosophy of Code of Conduct School officials, coaches of athletic teams and sponsors of student activities believe that students who are elected for the privilege of participation on teams, squads, performing groups, clubs and other school organizations should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of the school. In order to assure this conduct, coaches and sponsors enforce a Code of Conduct. Furthermore, members of teams and organizations who fail to abide by the Code of Conduct are subject to immediate disciplinary action. Members of teams and organizations must always serve as exemplars of high moral character and must demonstrate appropriate academic commitment which is expected from all students. As recognized representatives of their school, participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior during the season (activity) or out of season, in uniform or out of uniform, on campus or off campus. SECTION A – Rules and Guidelines CHA Upper School has as its primary goal the academic education, as well as the physical, spiritual, and social development of all students. Therefore, students are expected to demonstrate good citizenship by following all school rules; local, state and federal laws; and comply with all Illinois High School Association by-laws and eligibility requirements. 1. Violations of any of the following will be considered violations of Code of Conduct and will subject the violator to disciplinary action: a) school rules as described in the Student section of the Student-Parent Handbook; b) local ordinances; c) state and federal laws; d) the display of proper sportsmanship at a school activity, competition, or event. 2. Attending parties or gatherings where illegal substances or tobacco products may be present is strongly discouraged. The concern for the health and overall welfare of its students is at issue along

with the potential for problems that may face the students in such situations. We encourage students to make responsible choices. It is the expectation of the school that students will be in attendance and fully participate in normal school activities on the day of an event, activity or contest. The administration reserves the right to limit participation of students in cases of non-attendance at school. School officials are not expected to monitor off-campus, non-school activities unless the violation is brought to their attention, is sufficiently severe to bring discredit upon CHA Upper School, and said conduct is reasonably proven. Each coach or sponsor has the prerogative to establish additional rules pertaining to the activity supervised which do not conflict with this Code of Conduct. Such rules may include attendance at practices, curfew, dress and general conduct of participants during practices, contests, trips, etc. Rules set by the individual coach or sponsor must be in writing with the approval of the Director of Athletics or the Administration, and communicated in writing to the student participants before his/her activity begins. Students suspended from school will not be allowed to participate in activities or athletics while they are on suspension. Additional consequences from the athletic or student activities department may also follow. The Dean’s Office will be notified of all violations of the Code of Conduct and the consequences of the infraction. In addition to the penalties imposed by the Code of Conduct, such infractions will also be subject to appropriate Board of Education disciplinary policies.
SECTION B – Procedures A student may be suspended from participation in any activity according to the following procedures: 1. All reports of violations of the Code of Conduct are to be made either to the Director of Athletics. 2. The director of the respective activity shall contact the student, parents, coach or sponsor to inform them of the violation and the procedures to be followed. If requested in writing, a meeting shall be scheduled within three (3) school days. This meeting shall include the director of the activity, the student, his/her parents, if they desire, and the student’s coach or sponsor. 3. The director and coach or sponsor will determine the course of action. The student and his/her parents shall be notified of the decision immediately. 4. Any student who violates the guidelines and/or does not satisfactorily complete the season or activity may not be eligible for any awards or special recognition given for participation in the activity. Furthermore, a student who holds an elected or appointed office or position (i.e., peer leader, team captain, student organization officer) may be required to relinquish said position upon violation of the guidelines. 5. Penalties will be applied in every activity in which a student participates. Penalties will be applied in the current or upcoming sport and/or performance activity in which a student participates. Any offense constitutes a violation for the purposes of all activities covered under the guidelines. SECTION C –Guidelines for Action Consequences for Code of Conduct infractions by athletes and activity participants are determined by the following guidelines. There is no differentiation of consequences for in-season or out-of-season participation, and a penalty may carry over from season to season and/or year to year. The consequences may exceed the minimum guidelines due to the egregious nature of the infraction. Rule enforcement will be consistent and immediate.
1st Offense: Suspension from 10% of the season for all general Code of Conduct violations as well as use of tobacco or tobacco products or 20% of the season for other illegal substances. Studentathletes may be referred to a counselor regarding issues related to the violation. All suspensions are to be rounded to the higher full game or contest. 2nd Offense: Suspension from 30% of the season for all general Code of Conduct violations as well as the use of tobacco or tobacco products or 60% of the season for other illegal substances. The
student-athlete will be required to attend an educational program for issues related to the violation that has been approved by the counseling and athletic departments. All suspensions are to be rounded to the higher full game or contest.
3rd Offense: Suspension from all athletics for one calendar year. Consequences resulting from Code of Conduct violations may be carried over from season to season and/or year to year.

Coaches are expected to be well informed of the sport’s current rules and regulations. The IHSA website is a key resource. Coaches must be cognizant of any rules or changes of rules and teach them to the players. When in doubt, coaches should contact our athletic director as soon as possible. A coach’s failure to adhere to a sports rules, regulations, and/or expectations jeopardizes our school, our athletic program, and our team.

INJURY OF AN ATHLETE If an injury occurs, please do the following: • Report all injuries to your coach when they occur. • Use only rest, ice, compression (ace wrap) and elevation to treat injuries until you consult your doctor. • If you see a physician, get a note with a diagnosis and any restrictions and present it to your coach. • If you have severe swelling, severe pain, loss of joint motion or a head injury, see a physician.
MANAGERS, TIMERS, STATISTICIANS Our sports teams are in need of individuals who make a valuable contribution to the success of the teams by keeping time and statistics, maintaining equipment and helping the coach as needed. Students interested in helping with a particular team should contact the Athletic Director. Managers may practice along with the team, giving them opportunity to continue to work on their skills. The school attendance policies and other polices in this Athletic Handbook and the Parent-Student Handbook will apply to these individuals as well.
PETS & TOBACCO PRODUCTS Pets are not allowed on the premises of any CHA outdoor or indoor facility. School facilities and grounds are a tobacco free environment. The use of any tobacco product is prohibited. Thank you for your compliance.
PRACTICES Students must accept the responsibility for being prompt and in regular attendance at practices as well as contests. Students must be aware of the time demands and commitments of team membership. Students are required to attend all practices unless advance arrangements are made with the coach. We realize that students are busy, but a commitment must be made to practice and play with the team on a regular basis. If this is not possible, it would be in the best interest of the individual to delay participation on the team until a later time. Outdoor practices may be rescheduled due to inclement weather. An athlete must participate in physical education class in order to practice with the team.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE To participate in an interscholastic event, a student must attend at least three classes on the day of the competition. If a student is absent due to illness for a full day of school, the student may not participate in the athletic event that day. Any exceptions would have to be pre-approved by the athletic director and the student’s principal. If a student has a note excusing him/her from P.E. class on the day of a scheduled contest, the student will not be allowed to participate in that day’s contest. An athlete must participate in physical education class in order to practice or compete with the team.
TEAM SELECTION Opportunities for student participation on the interscholastic teams are open to eligible boys and girls who fully participate. Coaches will select students, after opportunities for practice are given, for those teams based upon the following criteria: Athletic ability in the sport Sportsmanship Team work Team effort and team attitude Work ethic and reliability Eligibility requirements per CHA handbooks Student athletes must at all times demonstrate the highest caliber of sportsmanship and Christian behavior. Failure to do so may result in suspension or loss of team membership. Students are to listen to the coach’s direction and instruction; athletes should know what is expected of you at all times. If all students participating in try-outs are placed on a team and there is room for additional players, eligible students may join a CHA sport team during the athletic season at the discretion of the Athletic Director. If a CHA team finds it necessary to make cuts during try-outs, no additional students may join once the athletic season begins.
TRANSPORTATION POLICY Christian Liberty Academy plans to send a van to transport students from Christian Heritage Academy to Christian Liberty Academy for practices and contests. This is not guaranteed, but is a courtesy. Parents are responsible for transportation. Students should be prompt when arriving at the CLA van as many sport teams are involved. CLA provides transportation to away games, leaving and returning to the Christian Liberty Academy-Arlington Heights campus. Ideally, CHA tries to provide transportation for off campus extra-curricular activities and events via school or contracted vehicles. When school or contracted vehicles are used to transport athletes, the student must return from the contest on that vehicle. The athlete must notify the coach if they will not be returning in the CHA vehicle. If school transportation is not available, each driver must hold a valid Illinois drivers’ license and be at least 21 years old as is required by the State of Illinois for transporting students. Driver must have a minimum total driving experience of five years after receiving a driver’s license. An athlete driver with a valid license may drive his own vehicle to a contest on a case by case basis. Student athlete may NOT transport any team mates.
Opponent schools’ address and phone number information is listed in this Handbook and on the Athletic tab). If a school does not appear on this list, information will be provided by the coach at a later time.
SAFETY MATTERS SEATBELTS ARE REQUIRED! If you have an accident, first deal with the emergency issues at the scene. Then immediately call the school. If it is after hours, call an administrator. Call the police and get a police report – no matter how minor the accident. That is the record of all drivers and all insurance companies involved. Do not take a vehicle that you believe has a mechanical problem.
