From the Pastor… This week Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Masses will be at 8 am, 12 pm and 7 pm. In this bulletin is a flyer listing many ways to pray, fast and give alms this Lenten season. I also include these words from Pope Francis of other ways to fast. Do you want to fast this Lent? (In the words of Pope Francis): Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. Fast from worries and have trust in God. Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity. Fast from pressures and be prayerful. Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. Fast from grudges and be reconciled. Fast from words and be silent so you can listen. What ashes mean on Ash Wednesday: The imposition of ashes is a solemn ritual that signals the beginning of the holy season of Lent. The ceremony is distinctive; there is no liturgical action like it throughout the entire church year. The ashes come from a previous Palm Sunday. The palms are burned and then the ashes are crushed into a fine powder. The ashes are blessed by the priest during Mass. When the ashes are applied to a person’s forehead in the shape of a cross, the minister says, “Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15) or “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). Ashes symbolize two things in the Old Testament – death and repentance. Death: Ashes are equivalent to dust, and human flesh is composed of dust or clay (Genesis 2:7), and when a human corpse decomposes, it returns to dust or ash. For example, Abraham told God, “I am but dust and ashes” (Genesis 18:27), a reference to his human mortality. Jeremiah described death as a “valley of corpses and ashes” (Jeremiah 31:40). Ashes are an ominous sign, and we use them on Ash Wednesday to remind ourselves of our own impending deaths. Lent reminds us we should be preparing for the journey when we leave this earthly life. Ashes are a plea to God for mercy, compassion, pardon and forgiveness. Repentance: Ashes are a public expression of sorrow for our sins and a promise to seek forgiveness. We are sinners and Lent gives us a beautiful opportunity to grow in holiness so when we celebrate Easter it is a joyful reminder of our resurrection to come. I wish you all a Lent filled with many graces and growth in experiencing the love of our Lord in your lives. God bless, Fr. eGiving with Faith Direct You have or will soon receive a letter from me about using an online provider for our eGiving needs through Faith Direct. Faith Direct enables parishioners to make your church contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments. If you prefer to use envelopes and checks/cash, you can continue to do so. However, if you want the ease of using electronic giving, please join me in enrolling. I used Faith Direct at my previous parishes and it works great. To enroll, you can respond to the mailing you will or have received from me, or you can visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll securely online. Our parish code is MD888. Thank you for considering. God bless, Fr. Dan
