THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 21, 2018
WELCOME TO PASTOR JEFF GOODRICH Over 100 years ago the first Church Unity Octave was celebrated. This call for the Christian churches to grow closer, now known as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, caught the imagination of others beyond the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement to become an energetic movement that gradually blossomed into a worldwide observance involving many nations and millions of people. To mark this Week of Prayer this year we are doing a pulpit exchange between Saint Luke parish and Good Shepherd Lutheran parish here in Westborough. This Sunday, January 21st, I will preach at Good Shepherd at the 9:00 and 10:45 AM services. Then, the following Sunday, Jan. 28th, Pastor Jeff Goodrich, pastor of Good Shepherd will preach at St. Luke’s at our 9:00 and 11:00 AM Masses. Pastor Jeff Goodrich has served the people of Good Shepherd since July 2009. Pastor Jeff is married to Pastor Hannah Brown, who serves a Congregational church in West Concord, MA. They live in Concord with their daughter, Miriam and son, Simon. We are joyfully looking forward to Pastor Jeff’s visit and preaching. Our parishes have a long and rich history of ministry. While we have many shared services and activities through the Westborough Interfaith, we have developed many other areas of care and support directly between our two parishes and other Christian churches in town. Both Good Shepherd and Saint Luke are sponsors of an immensely successful Ecumenical Summer School for our children each year. Good Shepherd has created a special food program that Saint Luke is once again offering support. In the fall of 2016, Good Shepherd and St. Luke’s jointly reflected on the commemoration of Martin Luther’s reformation movement five hundred years ago and studied Pope Francis’s document called On Care of our Common Home. We are presently working on a number of ways to improve our efforts to care for the earth and its people. We share far more in common than what separates us. Internationally and nationally dramatic conversations and growing understanding and appreciation of each of our Christian traditions has reached new milestones. While there are still significant differences between Lutherans and Catholics, there is also a growing respect and understanding. To exchange pulpits is another opportunity for us to learn from our Lutheran neighbors, and to share a Roman Catholic perspective as well. The unity of the Church and Christian ministry throughout the world is God’s plan and prayer. Unity is not something that we create. Instead, it is something that we realize. May our eyes be opened to how Jesus binds us together to share God’s love and God’s people.

Cursillo was brought from Spain to the United States in 1962. The weekend is facilitated by a team of laypeople and clergy who deliver organized talks and discussions. What the presenters add to the talks is the witness of their own lives, their struggles and triumphs in Christ. The weekend is full of laughter, prayer, great music, wonderful meals and so much more. Our 2018 dates are: Men’s - February 22-25 & June 1417; Women’s - May 3-6 & October 25-28. All weekends will be held at the Immaculate Conception Spiritual Renewal Center in Putnam, CT. Enrich your Lenten Meditation with a spiritual study on... SEVEN DEADLY SINS AND SEVEN LIVELY VIRTUES Sin separates us from the love of God, but the practice of virtue can restore right relationship with Him. This Lent we shall journey from sin to sanctity with Bishop Robert Barron’s spiritual study on the Seven Deadly Sins and their corresponding virtues. Bishop Barron is the acclaimed author and theologian who wrote and produced the popular series on Catholicism seen during Lent here at St. Luke’s several years ago. Presented by Bishop Robert Barron on DVD, this program focuses on the Seven Deadly Sins, like pride, envy, anger, and how these gravely sinful habits manifest themselves in our lives. Then, Bishop Barron discusses Seven Lively Virtues, which correspond respectively to each deadly sin and gives us a practical means to avoid sin and grow in holiness. This small group study course will meet on Wednesday evenings at 7:00-9:00 PM on the following dates: February 21st and 28th, March 7th and 14th, and 21st. A daytime class will meet on Thursday mornings 9:30 – 11:30 AM on the following dates: February 15th and 22nd, March 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd. The daytime group will also conclude each session with the Life In Christ meditation on the Sunday readings, for anyone wishing to participate. Both the Wednesday and Thursday classes will meet in the Parish Hall, second floor of the Parish Center. Participants are responsible for obtaining a Study Guide/Workbook. Junior high classes resume Jan. 21 HS classes resume Jan. 28 Confirmation classes attend 6:30 mass and remain in church for class. 3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.
