He then challenged his brother if he considered himself a follower of Jesus. “I follow Jesus, up to a point.” His brother asked, “Could that point by any chance be —the cross?” “That’s right,” his brother said. “I follow him to the cross, but not on the cross. I’m not going to get myself crucified.” “Then I don’t believe you’re a disciple,” his brother shot back. “You’re an admirer of Jesus, but not a disciple of his. I think you ought to go back to the church you belong to and tell them you’re an admirer, not a disciple.” The lawyer snapped, “Well now, if everyone who felt like I do did that, we wouldn’t have a church, would we?” all?”

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! The Kingdom of God is at Hand – In the early days of the Church, the Christian community thought that the coming of the Kingdom and Jesus’ return in glory was quickly approaching. They lived their lives with constant anticipation and expectation so that they would be prepared for the day of the Lord to come. 2,000 years later we are still waiting for that day when the Lord will come again to judge the living and the dead and welcome the just ones into his Kingdom in heaven. Yet, we are also aware that the Kingdom is currently at hand in and through the Church on earth. This means that each of us, no matter our state in life, plays a role in building up and strengthening the Kingdom of God. The On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative seeks to do just that: build up the Kingdom of God, the Church, so that it can grow and thrive. The Church is alive and is given greater vibrancy the more we are engaged in its life and work. Let us all do our part to contribute to the flourishing of our parish communities in the weeks and months ahead. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to lear n mor e and to stay informed.
