Top 10 2018 Resident Resolutions!

We know it’s always hard to come up with a New Year’s resolution that you can stick with, so we’ve come up with a few that should work... 10. I will drink more water. (We can do without UTIs!) 9. I will take ALL my medications. (Doctor knows best!) 8. I will slow down and stay close to my walker. (Don’t want to fall!) 7. I will be kind to my fellow neighbors. (Don’t know what they may be going through!) 6. I will eat my fruits and vegetables. (Not just my ice cream!) 5. I will attend exercise every morning. (Want to stay in shape!) 4. I will attend at least one new activity a week. (Make new friends!) 3. I will wash my hands often. (Don’t want to spread germs!) 2. I will bathe more than once a week. (Keep your table mates happy!) And the #1 2018 Resident Resolution is... I will keep my sense of humor! (We love to laugh and have fun!) Thank you for a wonderful 2017! Here’s to 2018! -Anita

Meet Tena!

Tena was born in Poteau, Oklahoma, on March 25, 1927. When Tena was just 3, her mother passed away, so she and her father hitch-hiked across country to California. Tena’s father went to work on the Hoover Dam, and put Tena in a Catholic school while he worked there. Tena loved the time she spent at the Catholic school but didn’t understand why she wasn’t allowed to go to mass with the other children, but was instead made to sit in the office during that time. For years she thought it was punishment, but when she got old enough to understand, she found out that her father had promised her mother she wouldn’t be raised Catholic, so her father kept his word the best he could. Once the dam was finished, they moved back to Tulsa and Tena went to Public School. First Eugene Field Elementary, then Clinton Jr. High, and finally Webster High School, where she graduated in 1945. After graduation, Tena went back to California and worked at Minter Army Air Field, where she lied about her age to get the job! Ha! They called her ‘little bit’ and she was a true Rosie the

Puttin' on the Ritz We have a cooking class once a month and we always make snacks for Family Night Bingo. This past month’s cooking class fell on the holiday, "Puttin' on the Ritz", so we decided to make ritz cookies. We made homemade thin mints and chocolate caramel sandwiches, and boy were they good!

Riveter. Eventually Tena moved back to Oklahoma and began working for McDonald Douglas and helped build the wings of the airplanes. Tena has also had many other jobs over the years, from being a demonstrator for Hobby Lobby to working for Streets Department Store in accounting. It was during her time at Streets that she met the love of her life, Glen. Glen’s grandfather owned the Duncan Linen Company that delivered to the department store, so Glen saw Tena a lot. She didn’t like him at first, but his persistence finally made her say yes to a date, and the rest is history! Tena and Glen were married in 1952 and they have 3 wonderful sons to show for it: Keith, Mitchel, and Kelly. Not long after they were married, Glen took a job at South Western Bell where he stayed until retirement. Tena was working for Warren Petroleum when she had Keith, and with it being her first child, she decided she needed to be at home with him. Mr. Warren personally came to her house and asked her to please come back to work, but she wanted to be home with her baby. Mr. Warren also put Tena through school at Tulsa University! How cool is that!? Not only was Tena a hard worker, she was also a very talented hobbyist. She made beautiful clothes for a boutique in New York, she was excellent with ceramics, decoupage, knitting, and painting-any kind of craft really! She even knitted hats and scarves for family and friends every year for Christmas! Although they didn’t go on any exotic vacations, Tena and her family loved taking trips around the country camping! Glen passed away in 2000 after 48 wonderful years of marriage. Tena moved to Aberdeen just this past year, and we are so glad she did. She enjoys musical entertainment as well as our fun outings. You will always find her on the bus ready for the next adventure! If you haven’t met Tena, stop by and introduce yourself!

Bingo is

Better with Family! Joyce and her crazy bunch came to bingo! Debbie and her brother Steve had to split the money, so of course they just gave it to mom! haha!

Xavier decided to make his own bingo card!

Leslie and Irene waiting patiently for their numbers to be called!

Lighten Up! It's the Holidays!

Our annual light tour is always a blast, so this year we did 2 trips! We take our trips around Tulsa, Sapulpa, and even Broken Arrow to view some of the BEST local lights while sipping hot chocolate and singing carols! We always have to make a stop at Joyce's daughter, Debbie's house too! She passes out peppermints to all the residents, and gives us a personal tour around the neighborhood!

Bringing the Holidays Home!

Snazzy Snowmen!

From painting ornaments, to decorating the trees, residents and associates come together to bring home the holidays! It's amazing the magic you find around the holidays that bring everyone just a little closer together... because here at Aberdeen... We are Family!

Our craft classes are always fun and unique. This holiday season, we decided to get creative by making snowmen out of socks! We filled them with rice and decorated them with buttons, eyes, scarves, and of course a carrot nose!

o t s n o i t u l So New Year’s

s n o i t u l o s e R

As we welcome the New Year, we welcome a time of reflection and self-assessment. We have a new opportunity to do something we love, to meet a new challenge, to set a goal, no matter how small or large, and tackle it head-on without hesitation. This is where New Year’s Resolutions come into play. Some people see them as meaningless, while others plan their entire year around them. But no matter your age or stage in life, there is always room for optimism and positive thoughts. If you are trying to think of a few resolutions and coming up short, here’s some fodder to consider: • How much time do I spend with my family? How are our relationships? Is there anyone with whom I’d like to be closer, or I’ve distanced myself from and should make amends?

• Could I spend more time doing other things besides sleeping and eating? What’s my TV to reading ratio? Maybe I could go outside more often? • I am retired, so I should have hobbies; right? What are they? Maybe I should get a new one? Make a new friend? Learn how to play a new game? Now that you’ve considered some of these questions, you might be inspired to make a resolution, seek out a solution, learn something new, or mix up your daily routine. Regardless, do what makes you happy. Continue to age with ease and grace. Stay connected with loved ones, whether it’s by exchanging letters regularly or learning to use the Internet. Make sure family traditions stay traditions. Share your recipes and war stories. Let your family learn from your experiences.
