Science Writing Internship The Journal of Experimental Biology Based in Cambridge, UK The Journal of Experimental Biology is looking for an enthusiastic intern who wishes to gain experience in science writing and journal publishing. The Journal of Experimental Biology is one of the leading journals in comparative physiology and publishes papers on the form and function of living organisms, from the molecular and subcellular to the integrated whole animal. In addition to core primary research articles, the journal has a well‐regarded and dynamic magazine section of non‐research, news and review content. Some of the journal articles generate high levels of press coverage. The internship offers an ideal opportunity to gain experience of science publishing and news writing, working alongside an experienced News & Views Editor and within an established and successful journal team in our Cambridge offices. The intern’s responsibilities will include: • Interviewing authors and writing short articles to highlight the key findings and inside stories behind the journal’s research articles • Commissioning cartoons and working with freelance illustrators • Writing press releases and liaising with journalists/authors regarding media coverage • Editing non‐research content and providing constructive feedback to authors • Posting news content on the journal’s social networking sites Applicants will have a PhD or research experience in a relevant scientific field and a proven interest in communicating biological science. Additional requirements include excellent literary skills, a diplomatic communication style, a flexible approach and the ability to work within a team to tight deadlines. Previous editorial/writing experience is strongly preferred but not essential. The internship is expected to last for 11 months at a salary of £15,000 pro rata and is likely to start in October/November 2012.
