Serving the needs of our diverse Jewish community for more than 118 years. June 2015 | Sivan—Tammuz 5775
It’s hard to believe another school year is coming to a close. The month of May was bursting with activity, leading us to a spectacular ending to what has been an even more spectacular year. The Morris Museum was the destination for this year’s 4 year old class field trip. In coordination with the ongoing Art Appreciation class that the children participated in all year, the children had the opportunity to observe a variety of artwork in the gallery and complete an art project in the museum classroom, as well as to tour other exhibits. Special thanks to the mommies who chaperoned the trip and transported all of the children safely: Alison Wise, Jess Edelstein and Felice Yudkin. Truck Day is always a huge hit amongst the preschool set! Again this year we were treated to an up close and personal look at some of the most fascinating vehicles on the road! From fire trucks and police cars to street sweepers, tractors, backhoes, school buses and an ambulance, we saw it all! As a special treat, we had ice cream from the ice cream truck!! Special thanks to Cory Solotoff for putting it all together for us.
Rosanne Mendelowitz Nursery School Director
This year we continued a new early June/end-of-year tradition at PBJC Nursery where we combine Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Beach Day and Lag B’ Omer and celebrate “Family Day”. Nursery families joined us during the school day for a morning of field day types of activities, including relays, hopscotch, fishing, carnival games, parachute fun and more, in addition to crafts, snacks and a sing-along. It was a great morning made more special by the families who joined us and the staff who worked very hard to keep everyone busy and having tons of fun. This month we will be celebrating the "end of an era" for many of our students as we hold a Graduation ceremony to celebrate our PreK 4s as they close the doors to nursery school and move on to kindergarten! We will take a walk down memory lane from the past few years together and be overwhelmed with pride and joy at the fine young ladies and gentlemen who are the Class of 2015. We know our graduates will continue to grow and blossom and bring happiness to their families as they move forward in life! Mazel Tov to all!! There is still space in the fabulous Pine Brook Day Camp, for children ages 2-4 who are interested in a uniquely special camp geared for preschoolers! Registration forms are available in the nursery office or online at www.pbjc.org. Planning for the 2015-16 school year is nearly complete. I will be spending the summer putting the finishing touches on what promises to be another amazing, memorable and fun school year!! Anyone interested in registering should contact me for all the exciting details. As always, my door is open to anyone who would like more information about any of our nursery programs. Wishing everyone a wonderful, relaxing and happy summer!!

At PBJC, we want to build relationships among congregants and strengthen the bonds between members beyond the confines of formal worship services. One way to turn our synagogue house into a home is at the Oneg Shabbat. Consider a donation of $18 or more to celebrate your next birthday, anniversary, engagement, child’s birth, grandchild’s birth or other simchas by sponsoring an oneg at one of our Friday night Shabbat services. Sponsor an oneg for a friend’s event that you want to acknowledge. Sponsor one on your own, or with family or a group! Make checks payable to PBJC Sisterhood and submit it at least two weeks in advance. Include a note stating what the occasion is and who you are honoring or commemorating, to Elaine Nachshen, 74 Midvale Avenue, Lake Hiawatha, NJ 07034.

Mary Sheydwasser Religious School Director
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Merriam Webster includes in its definition of the verb reflect: “to bend back: to turn into or away from a course.” It’s my hope that to reflect characterizes the depth and breadth of the Judaic and Hebrew skills, thoughts and impressions our first-rate team of teaching professionals have passed along to the students at the Pine Brook Religious School during the past nine months. Our Religious School has completed another leg of its ongoing, and I proudly say, exciting journey to learn about our rich Jewish heritage and culture. The Kitah Hey class of 5775 has now graduated with the anticipation of returning as B’Yachad students in the fall, as our other Kitot move up and forward to another rung on our educational ladder. This academic year was an enjoyable and rewarding trip, filled with adventure and experiences that will help navigate our students’ religious and The beginning of Kitah Hey’s Jewish journey. spiritual development for the rest of their lives. Every step that we have taken has been a blessing, and I look forward to watching your children grow into fine young adults. Lag Ba’Omer is the name of the Jewish observance that refers to the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer. An “omer” refers to a sheaf of barley or wheat. In the book of Leviticus, it is written that God commanded people to make an offering of a sheaf of barley on each of the 50 days between Passover and Shavuot. In the past, the number of the day was announced after the evening service, and in time this ceremony came to be known as the “counting of the Omer”. The Religious School students had a wonderful day commemorating this holiday with games and prizes. Todah Rabah to Steve Gothelf and his “merry” Men’s Club for the delicious Bar-B-Que. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for supporting our Religious School with carpools, tuitions, fundraisers, and most importantly, participating in our programs and services. I also want to express my gratitude to the many lay leaders who have devoted their time and energy to make our synagogue and the Religious School the wonderful, vibrant place it is. We will be working over the summer to develop new curriculum and exciting programs that are meaningful to the students. As always, my door is open to your comments and suggestions to make this school the very best it can be. See you all in September; have a wonderful summer! June 2015 | Sivan—Tammuz 5775

Libby Toren June 26, 2015 Libby Toren becomes Bat Mitzvah on June 20, 2015. Libby joined and completed our family on July 3, 2002, just on time for her first Fourth of July celebration. Her older brothers Daniel and Yuval were happy and excited to meet their little sister. Libby is a student at Lazar middle school and spends her summers at camp Louemma, where she is having tons of fun with her camp friends. Libby plays basketball, travel volleyball and enjoys training for 5k races.
Libby enjoys vacations to Israel and spending time with extended family. There she practices her fluent Hebrew and acts like a complete “sabra.” For her mitzvah project she works with PBJC caring committee and also with “Remember Us” foundation, she will commemorate child who perished in the holocaust before becoming a bar mitzvah. We look forward to celebrating with our family and friends and the whole PBJC congregation.
Noah Fox August 28, 2015 Noah Samuel Fox will become a Bar Mitzvah on August 29, 2015. Noah was born on July 12, 2002. As Rabbi Lev noted during Noah's bris, which was performed by Cantor Toren, Noah is the third of three brothers and three boys makes a perfect family. Noah's brothers, Ethan and Parker, and his parents, Randee and Glenn, wholeheartedly agree and thank Noah for making it possible. Noah is a thoughtful, considerate, and smart young man and a team player. He has compassion for those who are less fortunate than he is and has a very consoling personality. Noah always gives 100%, whether it is for his studies at Lazar Middle School, his religious school and bar mitzvah studies at PBJC, his activities at Trail's End Camp, or for sports like lacrosse for the Montville Warriors and football for the Montville Broncos. Noah's compassion and dedication was particularly exemplified when he lead Sabbath services at the Chelsea Retirement Home for his mitzvah project. Noah's parents, brothers, grandma, and grandpa, and his nana in spirit, are all very proud of him and cannot wait to celebrate with him.

“Confessions of Post B’nai Mitzvah Educational Program Director.”
B’YACHAD HEBREW HIGH
Another year is complete and the time for my post mortem evaluation, reflection, and planning for next year begins. I can’t help but be reminded of the egg on the Seder Plate while Lion King’s, “Circle of Life,” plays over and over in my head. So, how did B’yachad do? How did I do? What would I do differently? Did I attempt too much, too little? OY! Stop with all of the questions! As an educator, I am driven by several things. My passion and unwavering love for Judaism is very difficult to hide. It’s an integral part of the very fabric of my existence. I have a strong sense of personal responsibility for the continuity of our religion. For a long time, I felt that educators forgot their students were human beings and need to be treated with respect. They didn’t need to be bullied, belittled, or forced into agreeing with adult perspectives. They shouldn’t need permission to use a bathroom and they should be trusted to make good decisions in the face of diverse options. What I came to understand through my own experiences as an educator is that students will NEVER be open to learning anything if we don’t validate them as people. Respect that is earned is willingly reciprocated.
My final motivator at Pine Brook is not only a friend, but also the person I report to. Many people might find it challenging to work for a close friend – they would be unable to maintain integrity in both work and social environments because one relationship would eventually compromise the other. So far, this has never been an issue, and I’ll share with you the secret: Although we have different approaches, Mary and I both have exactly the same vision. We have the same passion for the future of Judaism, community and Israel. Hershey Jaffe We both want to break down barriers and build a cohesive, inclusive, thriving institution B’Yachad Coordinator of Jewish appreciation and thought. We want a caring community, but not necessarily religious one. I know what she expects of me. My job is to make her vision a reality and because I respect our friendship, I never want to disappoint her. B’yachad, on the whole had a fabulous year. Our ninth and tenth graders soared. They challenged themselves in every class and mesmerized me at the way they unpacked texts and discussed issues. Listening to them and seeing their minds develop gives me hope for the future. However, there were a few bumps in the road. I learned that recruiting someone who says “I will come only if my friend does” is a slippery slope because if their friend gets a role in a play or plays for a traveling team, I lose them both when they drop out. This has a huge impact on a small class and doesn’t allow the student to stretch to make new friends. I learned that parents need to support this position because two years from now, their child will not be able to share every experience with a friend. I learned that changing dates to accommodate conflicting schedules always creates bigger problems than it solves. Our trip to Washington, DC never happened because the date was changed three times and each time we lost almost the same number of students. When we finally thought we had the “right” date, three parents came forward and told us their children weren’t aware of a family event. Next year we are checking the most popular events that seem to impact the school before we set the calendar this summer and those dates will be FIRM. Finally, I must plan for more than one session on a topic. While I always prepare material that I know we will never get to, this year’s ninth grade found a topic that they insisted on investigating further. I would never say ‘no’ to learning, so I searched for additional material. Little did I know that they would require three sessions on the subject. When I say, “I learn from them”, believe me, “I learn from them!” So how did we do? Well if registration is an indication, so far all but one of the graduates of B’yachad have committed to Beyond B’yachad, our new 11-12 grade program. Virtually all of the ninth graders will be coming back to for their 10th grade year. It looks like our eighth grade class will be of record proportions. Look for final numbers in the next Candlestick. And I wishi you all a wonderful, restful summer. 6

Friendship Club of PBJC
Betty Crane Friendship Club Coordinator
The Friendship Club began in 2000 with a grant from MetroWest. Currently, we have about 250 members from Morris and Essex counties. We meet at various times of the year depending on the synagogue schedule. We take trips to museums, attend concerts and shows, have a mid-winter brunch in February, a Shabbat dinner in November, and evening programs. We have about eight events a year, several with bus transportation. Dues are $25 annually. Spring has arrived at last and what a welcome relief after a long, long winter. I hope that you are enjoying the beautiful weather. As of this writing, we are looking forward to another musical class on Wednesday evening, May 20th in Scheinman Hall. Jessica Davy, clarinetist, composer and music educator, will discuss “Romantic Heart Throbs of the 19th Century” and so far, the response has been very good. Last fall, Jessica presented “The World of Classical Music” and it was an absolutely wonderful program. We had a lovely turnout at our meeting on Thursday evening, April 16. Vincent Marazo, manager of the Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton, and Rabbi Ira Kronenberg, former Director of Religious Services at the Daughters of Miriam Center, spoke to us about the advantages of pre-arranging and pre-paying for a funeral. It was an excellent seminar and the feedback from our members was very positive. If scheduling permits, we plan to present this program again next year. We thank Rosanne Mendelowitz, our Executive Director, and Harry Zohn, our Cemetery Chair, for making the arrangements. For the fourth year in a row, we will be offering the “AARP Driver Safety Course” which is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the synagogue. Marty Karasick, a member of The Friendship Club and a certified AARP volunteer will conduct the class. A flyer with all the details will be mailed to our members at the end of June. If you are interested in taking this course, please respond immediately upon receiving the flyer as the class size is limited. Wishing you a wonderful summer!

[email protected]. Winter has finally decided to say goodbye. SASS entered spring with a night out in Morristown. In mid April we began one evening with a delicious Italian meal and then proceeded to the Mayo Performing Arts Center for a night of comedy. As anticipated, the 5 new comedians did tickle our funny bones. We ended the evening at a local diner for coffee and dessert. Later on in April, we went to the movies to see “the Woman In Gold”. This was a fantastic movie, starring Helen Mirren as Maria Altmann, a holocaust survivor who sued the Austrian government for the return of priceless art stolen from her family by the Nazi’s. The movie was marvelous. People were actually applauding at the end of the movie. We recommend that everyone should plan to see this one.
On the evening of May 30th, SASS will attend a performance of “Always Patsy Cline” at the Parsippany Playhouse. This promises to be warm hearted, high spirited musical, starring Patricia Durante and highlighting the legendary music of Patsy Cline. Submission of this article preceeds the actual performance date, but we anticipate another great evening out. In June, a Brunch/Lunch is being planned. More information will follow to SASS members by e-mail. Over the summer we are planning a picnic, a trip to a baseball park, and a day trip into NYC
