Offertory Procession

The use of the poppy was inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields". Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned-up earth of soldiers' graves in Flanders, a region of Europe that overlies a part of Belgium. It is written from the point of view of the dead soldiers and, in the last verse, they call on the living to continue the conflict. The poem was written by Canadian physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, on May 3, 1915 after witnessing the death of his friend, a fellow soldier, the day before. The poem was first published on December 8, 1915 in the London-based magazine Punch. In 1918, Moina Michael, who had taken leave from her professorship at the University of Georgia to be a volunteer worker for the American YWCA, was inspired by the poem and published a poem of her own called "We Shall Keep the Faith". In tribute to McCrae's poem, she vowed to always wear a red remembrance poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who fought and helped in the war. At a November 1918 YWCA Overseas War Secretaries' conference, she appeared with a silk poppy pinned to her coat and distributed 25 more to those attending. She then campaigned to have the poppy adopted as a national symbol of remembrance. Fr. Bo LET US PRAY AND REMEMBER ~ The following Rev. The Diocese of Geita, Tanzania, faces daily challenges as it continues to bring people to the Catholic Faith. The vast majority of the people of diocese live at a subsistence level. The Diocese continually face financial strains which create a negative impact on the implementation and fulfillment of the primary mission which is integral human development. Financial problems are due to low income of the faithful, high inflation of the local currency, the growing number of dependents such as orphans, children from poor family background, and HIV/AIDS victims. Faith Formation / Evangelization focus is on training catechists for RCIA, Confirmation programs in parishes and mission communities. The diocese puts emphasis on animation of Christian Communities as agents of evangelization in the diocese. We aim to empowering women organizations and formation of youth associations. Like many other countries in Africa, this diocese suffers from both poverty and a lack of education among the people, especially the poor. We continue to struggle daily to advance the education of our children and youth, in the building of primary as well as secondary schools. Education is a priority of this diocese from young children to older adults. Another priority of the diocese is healthcare. The diocese has a strategic plan to improve the health of the people and support the one and only Sengerema Catholic Hospital which lacks medicine as well as hospital equipment. All the plans for the future of the Geita Diocese depends on the participation in the Mission Cooperative Plan through the dioceses in the United States which will help alleviate poverty throughout the Diocese of Geita. An envelope will be attached to next weeks’ bulletin. The collection will be taken up the weekend of June 10th and 11th. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In the year 2000, a Belgian man went to his local priest and confessed: "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. During the Second World War, I hid a Jewish man in my attic." "That's not a sin," said the priest. "It was an act of great kindness." "But I made him agree to pay thirty-five francs for every week he stayed." "I admit that wasn't particularly charitable," said the priest, "but you did it for a good cause." "Thank you, Father," said the man. "That is a great relief to me. I have just one more question." "What's that?" "Do I have to tell him the war is over?

Attention: Any present or new volunteers planning to work with our parish children: The PENNSYLVANIA CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICE LAW requires clearances and training for anyone working with our parish children. All helpers, volunteers and any other adults who wish to help chaperone and mentor our children in any way are those who are required to have and will need these clearances. These clearances will be free for all volunteers. If your job does not already require these, or you do not have these clearances, you will need to obtain them to work with the parish children. Start the process now, new volunteers are always needed. Once completed, you will need to provide copies of clearances and certification. We are required to have them on file. Parishioners that already have these clearances and training required by their jobs will only need to submit copies to our Saint Michael Parish Office. This will alleviate duplication of services. Please contact the Rectory Office at 495-9640 or the Religious Education Office at 495-4873 to obtain more information to help with this process.
