27th - 28th May 2015/ Politeknik Merlimau, MELAKA NTRODUCTION Sustainable development has received encouraging attention since the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development was signed in 1992 Earth Summit. It was also highlighted that building sector itself contributed about 45% of the total greenhouse gas emission around the globe (Edward, 1998; Wu & Low, 2010). A building impacts the environment through energy wastage, waste disposal, greenhouse gas emission, and soil contamination. Out of which, the greatest opportunity to reduce primary energy use and improving overall sustainability and efficiency lies within the existing building category. In Malaysia, the focus on sustainability in buildings has been spelt out in the government policies at national and state level. One of the existing references for greening of urban infrastructure and services in Malaysia is the MS1525:2014; Code of Practice on EE and Use of RE for Non-Residential Buildings. In the past, most of the buildings in Malaysia were built without energy efficiency index in mind; the average Building Energy Index (BEI) exceeded 200 kWh/m2/year. Therefore, efforts to retrofit existing buildings with efficient energy systems will enable avoidance of associated wastes and conserves embodied energy associated with new developments which will contribute towards sustainability in the building sector. The aim of the training is to educate participants about MS 1525:2014 Code of Practice. The training will guide participants to appreciate elemental clauses on efficient use of energy and incorporation of Renewable Energy technologies in new or existing non-residential building. Participants involved in preparing Organisational Sustainability Report will find the MS1525:2014 course benefitting since it addresses the energy aspect of the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) BENEFITS      

A comprehensive review of the MS 1525:2014 standard with opportunities for discussions. Step-by-step appraisal of the clauses of standard and its practical implementation strategy. Encourage projects execution involving new and existing buildings in a manner that reduces the use of energy without constraining creativity in its development. Provide criteria and minimum standards compliance for energy efficiency in the design of new buildings and retrofit of existing buildings. Provide guidance on energy efficiency designs that demonstrate compliance with minimum standards and; Encourage application of renewable energy in new and existing buildings to minimise non-renewable sources of energy consumption in buildings yet maintaining comfort, health and safety of the occupants.
