December Family of the Month Marjorie and Fred Soule

Meet Margie & Fred Soule, new residents of Columbia Cottage. They met in their church Youth Group in Reading. Fred was attracted to Margie’s short roller skating skirt and Margie was won over by Fred’s sense of humor. This past August they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Fred worked at T. Paul’s Automotive Garage as he had an early love of cars and mechanics. Marjorie, who had already been working as a church organist & choir director since she was fifteen, now also worked for Bell Telephone in the office. Almost exactly nine months after marriage, their daughter Debra came along. Can we say “honeymoon baby”! Daughter #2, Diane, arrived not long after moving into a larger home. With a burgeoning family Fred got a new job at Western Electric. Another three years later daughter #3, Donna, arrived. As the family grew some new passions emerged. For Fred it was buying big luxury cars, whenever he could convince Marge it was time to get another one. For Marge it was travel. Their first try at camping was basically setting-off in their Station Wagon without really knowing anything about it. Every summer the family packed up and headed out to see the U.S.A., guided by Marge the “Trail Boss” and travel planner. Through the years they traveled to every state and province of Canada except a few. Everything Marge and Fred did in their life centered around family, church, country, and deep and abiding love and respect for one another; which is still evident despite the challenges of their changing health situation that brought them to Columbia Cottage.

Lisa Stallone

What’s Happening

Hello everyone, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lisa Stallone. I’ve been in the healthcare industry for over twenty years and with Columbia Cottage for four years. I have three amazing children and their all grownups, Tanya, Troy and Joseph. I also have two adoring grandchildren, Neven Hailey and Nyle Asher. I have a knack of doing whatever I can to put a smile on your face or go the extra mile to make you laugh. I love music and was told many times that I should be on “Name that Tune”. I love to sing “it’s good for the soul”. I’ve always felt the need to care for others and to see that their needs are met in a way that make an impact in their lives. The residents at Columbia Cottage are my adopted Grandparents. I love and care about them tremendously, and being a part of Columbia Cottage is such a blessing. Finally, I’d like to thank our residents for allowing me to be a part of their life and I’m very grateful for the awesome staff members and management team.

Pie Eating Contest On October 31, we held a pie eating contest with residents and staff participants. Here are a few of our contestants that were up for the task. Joseph Ciatto, our Managing Director, Merri Ney, and Fred Soule.

Holiday Reminder: As the Holiday Season approaches, we are often asked about gifts for the employees. We very much appreciate the thoughtfulness of our residents and families, but we also must abide by policy and procedures. We believe each of our staff members works very hard to bring a great experience at the Cottage to your loved one. If you feel you would like to give a gift to the staff, please donate to the employee fund. Make a check out to Columbia Cottage and employee fund noted on the memo line. Checks may be given to Merri or Robin and/or placed in the lock box outside of the Wellness office.

Message from the President of Columbia Cottage Learn from Mistakes Someone once said that the definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over without changing anything and expecting a different outcome. This described my golf game perfectly for the past few years! Well, I finally realized that something had to change so I signed up for a few lessons from a local professional. It was not pretty at first but as I began to incorporate some of the techniques shared by the pro, my body started to learn how an effective swing feels. Over the next few months, I hit hundreds of golf balls and now, I am proud to say, that my game is a bit better and I have not lost a golf ball this year! My point in all this is that it is perfectly okay to make mistakes. Messing up means you tried, and messing up refines your purpose and potential. Thomas Edison tried more than seven hundred times to make the filament in a light bulb work before he had success. He wasn’t crazy, he was just learning. Thomas Edison realized the critical factor is to learn from your errors. Grow from them. Let me end this quick story by quoting Winston Churchill, who said,” All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes.” Take lessons learned and apply them towards tomorrow’s challenges and then, if needed, try again….

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ONE AND ALL! Well, here we are again! The Holidays are fast approaching, and the weather is crisp, but getting very cold! Can it possibly be the end of the year already? The days have been busy and often challenging, but oh so rewarding! We would like to let everyone know just how much we enjoy working with our residents and staff. Our staff is caring, loving and always dependable. They do an excellent job day after day in looking after our residents, providing for their needs, cooking their favorite foods and making sure that the Cottage looks just as pretty outside, as it does inside. To each one of our staff we say-thank you! It really takes a team effort. Our residents are a wonderful group of people! Each one has something different to offer and teach us from life’s lessons, to personal stories and experiences, business, life, histories and travels. We learn from our residents every day! We are privileged to serve our residents and we thank you, their families, for allowing us this honor and for giving us your support. At this time the Management team would like to express warm wishes, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. May 2018 be a special year of fun and laughter, good health and happiness for each one of you. With love and best wishes, The Management Team

Happy Halloween On October 31, here at the cottage we celebrated Halloween with a costume party/social hour, with Pumpkin golf, and festive ring toss. Our staff dressed for the occasion as well as some of the residents. We had a surgeon - Nancy Ortiz, a police officer - Mary Farrell, Janet Kline was our Human dart board, and Amber Marcinkowski as Minnie Mouse. Nancy Ortiz was our resident choice for best costume with Amber Marcinkowski a close second place. A good time was had by all in attendance.
