CLEANERS URGENTLY NEEDED AT OLOR We have a great loyal band of cleaners who every week clean our church. However, they are rather reduced in numbers. Would you be able to give some time to assist with the cleaning? The more volunteers, male, female, young or older we have then the less the commitment for all. Perhaps you have a few friends that you could get to come along and form your own team? We welcome individual and team volunteers. It’s not a weekly commitment, perhaps only once a month or whatever commitment you are able to make, and it doesn’t have to be on a set day or at a set time. If you can help, then please let us know by leaving your name and a contact number in the office or on the clipboard on the table in the porch.

PUBLICATIONS Copies of the new Diocesan 2018 Yearbooks are now available from the porch – priced £5 each. Copies of our monthly publications – My Day by Day, Bible Alive and the Magnificat are also available for sale in the porch. There is a new publication available called Living Faith. [email protected] and you will be added to the list. ALTAR SERVERS Anyone who has made their First Holy Communion can become an altar server (girls as well as boys). Please speak to Father Alban if you or your children are interested in learning about this ministry. PASTORAL PARISH COUNCIL Our Lady’s Parish Council met last Thursday evening; as soon as the Minutes are drafted they will be made available in the church porch. St Patrick’s Parish Council will meet on Tuesday of this week. It is not too late to suggest an item for discussion. Please use one of the forms at the bottom level of the i-Point. GROUPS Meeting at Our Lady’s: Prayer Group - Wednesday at 7:30pm. The Scripture Group - Tuesday at 7:30pm Friends Together – Third Wednesday of the month at 2pm Choir – Thursday at 7:30-9pm Meeting at St Patrick’s: Meditation Group - Monday at 5.30pm. Choir – Wednesday at 7.15pm. Knit and Knatter – 6:30-8:30pm 2nd and 4th Mondays in the presbytery (restarts this Monday). Catholic Women’s League – Third Tuesday of the month at 7pm. If anybody is interested in joining the youth group as a helper (minimum age 16), please speak to Father Alban. The parishes will be asked to help to fundraise to help these young people on their mission.
PRAYER REMEMBRANCES Your prayers are asked for the sick and the housebound and all those who are in hospital, the Hospice or local nursing homes, and for all who receive Holy Communion at home. The list of those on the Sick List is placed by the Book of Remembrance. We remember in prayer all who have died, especially Nicola Johnston, Deacon Steve McKenna of Oswestry, Canon Harry Stratton, Karl Bystrzynski and Joan Gough; all who are mourning the death of a loved one, and all those whose anniversaries occur about this time. MONEY MATTERS Last Sunday’s Offertory Collections: St Patrick’s: £1,028.07 Our Lady’s: £498.30 Thank you for your continued generosity. FIRST COMMUNIONS IN 2018 The preparation programme for First Forgiveness and First Communions in both parishes will begin soon. The young people at St Luke’s School will be prepared at school: their programme begins on 2nd February. Their Enrolment will take place on Sunday, 11th February at the 9am Mass. The first meeting for the St Patrick’s Parish candidates, and their parents, takes place this Saturday, 27th January, at 3pm in the Meeting Room. If your child is in Year 3 and wishes to join the programme, then please pick-up and complete one of the Registration Forms in the church porch and return by means of the gold box. Their Enrolment Mass will take place at the 11am Mass on Sunday, 4th February. Any child of Year 3 and above, who attends Our Lady’s Masses but does not attend St Luke’s School, is also invited to attend the St Patrick’s sessions. THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION We also need to find out who is eligible for the Confirmation programme later in the year. If you are aged 13+ and wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, please collect a form from the church porch. These need to be returned by the end of January. The deanery needs to collate the numbers and settle on a venue. We also need to recruit new catechists to help with these courses. If you are interested, please see Fr Alban. The forms are available at both churches. SECOND HAND BOOKS The second-hand books in the porch at Our Lady’s are now 3 books for £1.
THE BEACON There has been a tremendous response to the Competition – lots of you have put in entries. It was extremely difficult to make a choice, but we had to decide on one. You will see from the top of page one that the winning entry was for “The Beacon”, put forward by Michael Day of Wellington. The Beacon on top of the Wrekin is visible from both our parishes, and is a light shining in the dark. It was thought that this would be an appropriate name for our newsletter – shedding light upon the news and activities of both our parishes. We done Michael. Many thanks to all of you who put forward suggestions for the new name. CWL RAFFLE The St Patrick’s Catholic Women’s League is holding their annual raffle in aid of local charities to be drawn at the Parish Lunch next Sunday, 28th January. Raffle tickets will be on sale at Masses this weekend and next. A box is available in the Meeting Room for any contributions for prizes. Please support our main fundraising campaign of the year. Thank you. RETIRED PRIESTS’ FUND Thank you for your donations to last week’s collection. It is not too late to donate. Special Envelopes are available still for you to use. If you use weekly Offertory Envelopes, please can I ask that you write in your envelope number. If you do not have your Offertory Envelope with you, or you give to your Parish by means of a Standing Order, write in your name and home address. In this way, it will be possible to reclaim the tax on your donation if you have joined the Gift Aid scheme. A Leaflet about the Fund is also available which explains how to make a regular donation to the Fund by Standing Order, or how you can make your donation by cheque. It also explains how to take advantage of Gift Aid to boost your donation to the Fund. Jonah 3:1-5, 10
A reading from the prophet Jonah The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: “Up!” he said “Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.” Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, “Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.” And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour. And God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened. The word of the Lord. A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians. Brothers, our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own; and

Mark 1:14-20
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. “The time has come” he said “and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.” As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.” And at once they left their nets and followed him. Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in their boat, mending their nets. He called them at once and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, they went after him. The Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
