MARCH FOR LIFE - JANUARY 19

A WORD ABOUT THE WORD by Deacon Bob Fishman

This week’s readings are a very interesting mix of different themes and concepts. In our first reading from Deuteronomy, the people are afraid of God’s voice and power, and want Moses to ask God to raise up another prophet who will hear the voice of the Lord and relay it to the people. God allows this but warns that this authority should not be abused or there will be deadly consequences. In our own lives, how often are we like the nervous Israelites who for one reason or another became afraid of God? We choose to do our own thing rather than listen to God’s Church. We forget the Church is established by Christ’s authority and not ours. Our society has replaced God’s commandments with worldly ones, and our own attitudes and choices replace what God wants in our lives. Pope John Paul II called this thinking “the culture of death”. St. Paul reminds us not to let the cares in our lives drive us crazy. Rather we should turn to God and offer Him our concerns and anxieties for He is the remedy to what ails us. Finally, the gospel of St. Mark relays in powerful fashion the divinity and authority of our Lord Jesus shining through as He casts out demons and unclean spirits who, incidentally knew who He was. If the demons know of Jesus, how much more should we as Christians know Him? The bottom line is this…Are we going to continue trying to juggle as fast as we can? Will we continue to disregard God’s teachings and the teachings of His Church just to fulfill our own sinful choices? It reminds me of the guy on the old Ed Sullivan show who spun plates on sticks. As he got one going, another would start to wobble and ultimately all would crash to the ground. When we try to do it all our selves without God we can be certain the plates of our lives will ultimately crash and become a mess. Therefore, it is now time to turn all we have, and all of our attitudes and our own self authority over to Him once and for all. We give up our ways to Him who is “the Way”. We lay down our truths to Him who is “the Truth”, and finally we give our lives over to Him who is “the Life”. It is much better then juggling…Something to think about…May God richly bless you always…

Warm Hearts: blanket & towel drive to gift the poor on Valentine’s Day Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Associates of Helena Needs: new twin blankets, bath towels, hand towels & washcloths Dates: This drive is taking place in January, at many churches. Warm Hearts is an ecumenical ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Associates of Helena. Last year we donated several blankets to God’s Love. We received a thank you note expressing how the children felt warm and loved on Valentine’s Day when they received their new blankets. The poor in Helena are in need of new twin blankets, bath towels, hand towels and washcloths. This January, we invite you to help us donate hundreds of blankets and towels to fulfill their needs for a year. Donated new blankets and new towels will be distributed through organizations serving the poor in the Helena area—God’s Love, Florence Crittenton Home, Good Samaritan Ministries, Rocky Mountain Development Center, The Friendship Center and YWCA. Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Associates are women and men invited to partner with the vowed members of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth “to witness and share the mission of Jesus who calls us to love God with our whole hearts and to love our neighbor even as God loves us.” Contacts Bobby Lavinder: [email protected] or 406 431-1277 Linda McCray: [email protected] or 406 439-2073

Every Friday from 8 am until 4 pm, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place in the Cathedral. Come and spend a little time on your lunch hour before the Blessed Sacrament. This is a wonderful opportunity to consecrate one hour to Our Lord at the Hour of his Passion. Please join anytime following the 7:00 A.M. Mass.

VOLUNTEERS FOR THE RITE OF ELECTION

The Rite of Election is a special liturgical celebration where the adult Candidates and Catechumens across the Diocese of Helena publically express their desire to come into the Catholic Church by signing the book of election. We need about 16 volunteers for this special liturgical event. To volunteer please call the parish office at 442-5825 or email [email protected]

MARRIAGE PREPARATION

Diocesan policy states that couples wait 6 months from the time they first approach a priest regarding marriage. During that 6 month period the couple must participate in preparatory classes for the Sacrament of Marriage. Our next session will be February 5th through March 19th. For information, contact Kathy Surbrugg at 442-5825.

February 2-4, 2018 Ursuline Centre – Great Falls, Montana Stress in Your Marriage? - There is less than a week left to sign up for Retrouvaille. Retrouvaille is a program for married couples that feel bored, frustrated, or angry in their marriage. Some experience coldness and simply shut down. Others experience conflict and arguments in their relationship and don’t know how to change the situation or even communicate with their spouses about it. Retrouvaille is for any couple who would like to rediscover their marriage and improve communication. For more information about an upcoming Retrouvaille Weekend program for couples, contact registration team: at 1-800-470-2230 or visit our website: www.retrouvailleMT.org or www.HelpOurMarriage.com
