FIRST THREE MONTHS TIV UP A good beginning for 2017 started with a Q1 TIV increase of 7.3% to 140,839 units compared to the same period last year. Most improved sales were MPV (+75.8% or 9,021 units) and Window Van (+30,7% or 226 units). As expected, sales of commercial vehicles were lower due to the economic uncertainties of the domestic market but there was a silver lining where panel vans saw a 19.2% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. Total Industry Production (TIP) in Malaysia also saw an encouraging growth of 6.5% to 138,015 units compared to Q1 of 2016. Sales of new motor vehicles in the ASEAN region increased by 10% to 818,832 units compared to the same period last year. Other than Thailand and Vietnam which saw a marginal drop in performance, all other ASEAN markets showed healthy increases in sales. n See page 3 for more detailed figures

s is the norm of MAA AGMs, the whole annual event went on like clockwork. With the large turn up of Members, the el of the Management Council Members for the new term 2017/8 was a straightforward affair with all the top posts returned unopposed. In the end, all the existing Management Council Members were return to their respective positions for yet another term, showing the full confidence and support of MAA Members. After a press conference at the end of the AGM, participants and members of the media adjourned for a buffet lunch at the hotel’s café. n

INTRODUCING NEW UMWT LEADERS In a corporate function held on 28th February 2017, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. (UMWT) ushered in its new Chairman and new President. Mr. Akio Takeyama, the Deputy Chairman of UMWT introduced YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah bin Che Othman as its new Chairman and Mr. Ravindran Kurusamy as the company’s new President. YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad has more than 30 years of experience in the field of unit trust management, investment management and corporate finance. He has been with the Permodalan Nasional Berhad and was its group President and CEO for many years. Mr. Ravindran Kurusamy has been with UMWT for 26 years and has served in various divisions in the company. “Both YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad and Mr. Ravindran have vast experience
in the industry and I am confident that they will bring to our management team new ideas and new approaches which will benefit the company and take it to greater heights,” said Mr. Akio. Rohime Shafie who has been assigned to DRB-HICOM as the Head of Automotive in the Automotive Distribution and Manufacturing & Engineering Division reporting to YBhg. Rashid has over 27 years’ experience in the automotive field, with involvement in various automotive projects and organisations. Graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malaya in 1989, En. Rashid was involved not just in areas of manufacturing, research & development and management but also a strong advocate of passenger safety. He has given talks on passenger safety and importance of regulations for safer vehicles in the country. Prior to this appointment, he was the Chief Technical Officer of PROTON where he held several portfolios, including being instrumental in the development of the four new models in 2016. He sits on the Board of several PROTON subsidiaries and was previously the head of several companies within the DRB-HICOM Group. n

PROTON – A CENTRE FOR NATIONAL DUAL TRAINING SYSTEM YB Dato’ Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem, Minister of Human Resources, presented on 26th January 2017 the accreditation certificate to YBhg. FORD DONATES VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT Ford Motor Company, together with its local partner Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC), on 29th March 2017, named Montfort Boys Town in Selangor as the latest recipient of its Ford Conservation and Environmental Grants Programme in Malaysia. A Ford Kuga and a Ford Mondeo together with some training equipment were presented by Mr. Bagus Susanto, Managing Director, Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor Company and En. Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director of SDAC to representatives of Monfort Boys Town.
TEY 2017 LAUNCHED ‘Reduction of Carbon Footprint’ is this year’s Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) theme launched on 2nd March 2017 by YBhg. Dato’ Sri Khairil Awang, Deputy Director General of Education Malaysia in the presence of Mr. Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, Mr. Ravindran Kurusamy, President of UMW Toyota Motor and students from selected schools in Malaysia. Since its inception in 2001, UMWT had spent more than RM 6 million for the programme. TEY is one of UMWT’s CSR activities and is a community-level project involving multiple stakeholders including the local councils, governmental agencies, community leaders, local residents and private companies.
DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE Over 140 Malaysian licensed drivers participated in the Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme, organised by Ford and local distributor Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC), as part of their continued efforts to increase road safety awareness in Malaysia. Participants included members of the CitiClub by CitiBank, employees of Sime Darby Berhad, fans of Ford Malaysia’s social media channel, as well as members of the general public who attended the six half-day training sessions workshop held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) in March 2017.
