SAINT MIGUEL FEBRES CORDERO 1854 1910 Feast day is February 9

Saint (Brother) Miguel (18541910) was a member of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was born Francisco FebresCordero Muñóz on November 7, 1854 at Cuenca, Ecuador and died at Premià de Mar, Spain on February 9, 1910. Francisco was born crippled to an influential Ecuadorian family and was unable to stand until the age of 5, when he received a vision of Our Lady. In 1864 he entered a Lasallian school and subsequently entered the Novitiate on March 24, 1868; he was the first Ecuadorian to be received into the Institute. Miguel, a name he assumed after becoming a De La Salle Brother, pursued teaching as a career. He also did research and authored books on literature and linguistics, which earned him membership in the Ecuadorian Academy of Letters in 1892, followed by the Academies of Spain, France, and Venezuela. In 1907, Brother Miguel was sent to Europe to translate texts into Spanish, which were to be used by the Christian Brothers who were exiled from France. In 1909, he was transferred to the junior novitiate at Premià de Mar, where he oversaw an evacuation of his charges to Barcelona. Shortly thereafter, he contracted pneumonia and died at Premià de Mar. On October 30, 1977, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI and on October 21, 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Bl. Miguel Febres Cordero.

THE GABRIEL PROJECT

You may have seen the signs outside the basilica for the Gabriel Project and wondered what they were for.... The Gabriel Project is a parish-based outreach to women who are distressed over an unplanned or crisis pregnancy. In the Gabriel Project a trained parish volunteer called a "Gabriel Angel" supports the woman's choice for life through companionship, friendship, encouragement, and prayer throughout her pregnancy and afterwards. In addition to providing emotional and spiritual support, the project can assist the expectant mom with practical needs, including helping them find resources such as: · Pregnancy information and assistance with pre-natal care · Maternity and baby clothes, cribs, strollers, and various baby items · Referrals for housing, medical care and counseling · Parenting support or adoption information Currently the project coordinator for San Albino is Rich Libicer. Anyone who is interested in volunteering and undergoing training for the project can contact him through the Basilica office for more information.

As you may be are aware, a federal judge last week issued an order to allow DACA recipients to ability to renew their work permits while a legal challenge to ending DACA proceeds. On Saturday, January 13, information was sent that the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service will begin accepting DACA renewal requests once more. It is uncertain how long this will be in effect since the administration is seeking a ruling by the Supreme Court to allow them to end DACA. Given that this is unknown time window to renew DACA, please encourage your parishioner who are DACA recipients to file ASAP. The Legal Department of Catholic Charities of Southern New Mexico is making these cases a priority so for now. In order for Catholic Charities to assist them with their renewals, please direct DACA recipients to their office at: 2215 S. Main St., A and B Las Cruces, NM 88005 Or call to call them at 575-527-0500 There are time slots available for appointments at Catholic Charities for DACA recipients to come begin the process to get their applications filed. The fee is $230 and will cover expenses in preparing the packets and mailing the same via priority express mail to guarantees delivery.
