We face suffering and uncertainty in our lives, yet faith allows us to trust that these difficult times will eventually lead to a great good. How many times do we have to stumble and fall before we realize that following God’s ways, and not our own, leads to happiness and salvation? Let us not resist the Lord, but answer his call.
Samuel does not recognize God’s voice, but he is alert and obedient, listening and ready for action. We hear that he ran when called, and another time he rose. Eli gives Samuel the correct response: Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. We live in a world of noise and distraction. Are we ready to answer? Can we even hear? PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (CANDLEMAS DAY) - February 2. On this day, blessing of the candles will take place during the Masses. We invite everyone to bring your candles from home to have them blessed and use them for personal or family prayer. Begin your prayers by saying, “Blessed be God who has brought light into our darkness.” Light the candles daily and spend a moment in prayer. Today reminds us that 40 days have passed since Christmas when Mary and Joseph brought the child Jesus into the temple. There they encountered Simeon who recognized Jesus. Holding the child in his arms, he prays to God in thanksgiving but he also speaks about the suffering both Jesus and his mother will endure. It is a joyful recognition followed with predictions of sorrow. SAINT BLASÉ is celebrated on Saturday, February 3. He is the Patron Saint of all who suffer from afflictions of the throat. Blessing of the throats will be administered in our Church during the 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Masses. All are invited to participate.
