With the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal coming up in the first weekend of February, I thought as pastor that I might again offer some words for us all to meditate on in order to have a successful campaign and play our part in fulfilling our mission to establish God’s kingdom here in Western Oregon: The word stewardship, in Old English, means keeper of the house/sty. In the Greek, (Oikonomos), one important additional concept is added…managing the household according to the mind of the master. For Christians, that means trying to contribute to the life of the Church according to the mind of God. In Redemptoris Missio (Mission of the Redeemer), Blessed John Paul II puts it this way, ”All that we have received from God – life itself as well as material goods – does not belong to us but is given to us for our use. Generosity in giving must always be enlightened and inspired by faith; Then we will truly be more blessed in giving than in receiving.” Benedict XVI put stewardship in a more cautionary light in his Sept. 23, 2007 Angelus when he said that money/material wealth “more than anything else…has the power to lead man into blind selfishness. What is needed, then, is to achieve a kind of ‘conversion’ of economic resources: instead of using them for our own interests, we must think of the needs of the poor, imitating Christ Himself.” Finally, our current leader, Pope Francis has this to say on the subject: “In this period of crisis today, it is important not to turn in on ourselves, burying our own talent, our spiritual, intellectual, and material riches, everything that the Lord has given us, but rather to open ourselves, to be supportive, to be attentive to others. Set your stakes on great ideals, the ideals that enlarge the heart, the ideals of service that make your talents fruitful. Life is not given to us to be jealously guarded for ourselves but is given to us so that we may give it in turn (April 14, 2013). The wisdom of our recent popes invites us to take this challenge of stewardship seriously and to prayerfully ask God to guide our response with his heavenly wisdom.

Through the lens of faith, we can begin to see that participating in these periodic archdiocesan appeals is not only rooted in our discipleship as part of who we are but it is also rooted in Christian history. For example, in the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul is given only one specific directive from St. Peter and the other apostles before he heads out on his missionary journey: to take up a collection for the poor of Jerusalem who will suffer from a drought-caused famine (see Acts 11:27-30, 12:25). Paul himself makes mention of this missionary appeal in 1 Cor. 16:1-4. It is also in Acts (4:36-5:11) that we are told early Christians sold all they owned and gave it over to the disciples for distribution to meet the needs of the early Church. Each gave according to his or her ability pooling everything they had into a common fund. Then each was given resources from that fund at the discretion of the apostles according to their individual need. Barnabas is listed as one who acted commendably and with generosity in this regard when he sold all of his property and placed the revenue from that sale at the feet of the apostles as he entered the community. The apostles, in their ministry abroad, were supported by a group of widows who served as benefactors for their work. And St. Paul, in his own letter to the Philippians, also commends that community for their generous stewardship in giving financially to the support of his ministry. In short, fundraising and the practice of taking up collections is as old as Christianity and forms a practical part in doing the works of the Gospel. Therefore, I invite all of us to really pray and discern about what God may be inviting us to do in order to assure Archbishop Sample, our local shepherd, that he will have all of the resources he needs to direct the local church and proclaim the Good News here in our midst.
ARCHBISHOP’S CATHOLIC APPEAL 2018 Next weekend, is Commitment Weekend for the 2018 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. During Mass we will watch a video from Archbishop Sample about the Appeal. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail, please bring it to Mass with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card, pledge envelopes will be available during Mass. This week, please read the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal materials in the Bulletin and prayerfully reflect on the level of commitment you will make. The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal provides substantial financial support to essential ministries in western Oregon. These programs provide education and faith formation at all levels and provide a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of people. When we stop to count our abundant blessings, we are aware of how truly blessed we are. The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is an invitation to share your blessings and support for the Gospel mission here in Western Oregon. Your pledge is also a sign of your gratitude for God’s generous abundance. While we can never out-do God in generosity, we are called to join in the mission of the Gospel as we put forth the gifts of life, goodness, and grace through the sharing of our own blessings from God

KIOSK FEATURE OF THE WEEK Abandonment to Divine Providence God is to be found in the simplest of daily activities and through total surrender to his will. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to “live in the present moment,” accepting everyday obstacles with faith, humility, and love, has guided generations of believers to holiness and spiritual peace. De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God’s will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people—from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God’s will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from his hand. SACRED HEART SCHOOL NEWS Catholic Schools Week begins this Sunday. Our students have been busy making posters, composing letters and cards for administration, support staff, priests and Parish staff. They will also write thank you notes to their parents. This Sunday at the 8:30 Mass our students will lector, bring up the gifts, sing in the choir, etc. There will be coffee and donuts in the Hall following Mass. Battle of the Books practice. Our students have been reading the 16 books on the BOB list since they were announced this past summer. The books are chosen by the Oregon Library Association. The actual battles will take place at the end of February and the winners will go to the Regional Competition. We need teacher subs! Are you interested in subbing at Sacred Heart School? CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS Court St. Mary #1800 is in Medford, OR. Our members from Medford and the surrounding area meet at Sacred Heart Catholic Church each month with the exception of July and August. We are Catholic lay and religious women 18 or older who love and support the Church and the Holy See and desire to participate in social and charitable activities. Fr. Shane McKee is our Chaplain.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Holy Communion and Kids On Tuesday, January 22nd, the Sacrament Preparation children and their parents began their journey towards First Communion in May. So what’s important to teach our children about Holy Communion? It is important to teach kids our Catholic belief in the Real Presence – that is, Jesus Christ’s real and true presence in the Eucharist. The bread is no longer bread, and the wine is no longer wine, but after being consecrated by the priest, these are now the body and blood of the risen Lord. Help children with this teaching by stressing reverence for the Eucharist that includes silence during the consecration, a small bow before receiving Holy Communion and kneeling in prayer after returning to the pew. Be sure to stress that Christ’s presence is not magic, but is the great mystery of our faith. We rejoice and give thanks for the gift of Jesus Christ in all of the sacraments – especially in the Eucharist.
