BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Brief Silence Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God’s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of ☩ Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: C: P:

C:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you sent your Son to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of your Spirit, that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

FIRST READING: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 The book of Jonah is a comedy starring a reluctant prophet who is given a one-sentence message: Nineveh will be destroyed in forty days. Much to Jonah’s dismay, the people of Nineveh repent. The point of the story is to get the reader to wrestle with the question “On whom should God have mercy?” 1 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2“Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And 6

he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. A: C:

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul does not disapprove of marriage or other human social institutions. He does, however, want Christians to live in the present in fervent anticipation of God’s future, which even now has dawned through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 29 Brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, 30and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, 31and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. A: C:

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

7

GOSPEL: Mark 1:14-20 P: The Holy Gospel according to MARK, the 1st chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Before Jesus calls his first disciples, he proclaims a message that becomes known as “the gospel” or good news from God. God is ready to rule our lives. Those who realize this will respond with repentance and faith. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” 16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. P: C:

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A:

Confident that God our light and our salvation hears us when we pray, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need. Brief silence For the church in all its forms, for unity in Christ, and for those who proclaim the good news in word and deed, that all trust that the kingdom of God has come near, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For clean water and air, for fertile lands, so that all creatures and people have enough food, nourishing drink, and breathable air, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. 10

For public defenders and district attorneys, for the armed forces and international peace organizations, and for all public leaders, that those in authority work for the well-being of all people, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For the poor and oppressed, for the sick and bereaved, for those living with HIV and AIDS, and for all people in need (especially, Pam Weisheit-Hart, Linda Mann, Rich Sendelweck, Linus Schnarr, Jay Harker, Gary Chanley, Kim Burnette, Amy Poehlein, and for Christians and all individuals who suffer from persecution), that your power and compassion will be visible to those who need care and those who provide care, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. For this congregation and its ministries, for visitors in our midst, and for students returning to school, that your Holy Spirit will guide us in all our endeavors, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. In thanksgiving for those who have died, that their lives of faithful service point us to the steadfast love of Christ, let us pray. Have mercy, O God. Other intercessions may be added. Merciful God, you hear our prayers even before we speak them. Receive them for the sake of the one through whom you have revealed your goodness, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

PEACE P: C:

OFFERING OFFERTORY

OFFERTORY PRAYER P: C:

Let us pray. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 12

WORD OF INSTITUTION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. LORD’S PRAYER P:

Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

WELCOME VISITORS: We welcome you to St. John’s Lutheran Church and we hope that you will enjoy our worship to God. Please take time to fill out a “St. John’s Ministry Notes” card that is located in the bulletin. Once you have filled that card out please place it in the offering plate. We hope that you will consider making St John’s your worshiping community. NURSERY: St. John's loves having children in church, but we want parents to know that we do have an unmanned nursery available downstairs in our Education Wing if needed. The nursery is wired for sound so you can still participate in the service. Take the ramp downstairs which is located next to the upstairs restroom. The nursery is located on the left-hand side of the long hallway four doors down.

HEARING DEVICES: St. John's offers "Hearing Devices" to individuals who need them. They are located in a basket in the Narthex. They have been updated and are ready to be used. The batteries are not in the device but are in the basket and need to be installed to use. If you wear a hearing aid you will need to remove it and put the ear bud directly into your ear. You are welcomed to bring your own ear buds. If you have any questions or need any help contact Linus Mann at 812-351-0612.
